THE CAULDRON . .. ..... _____ I Mercer University Macon, Georgia 1967 3 4 V A Time to Learn 7 8 10 tl Miss Cauldron Suzanne Thornton Based solely on the quality of beauty possessed, Miss Suzanne Thornton ha-; been named Miss Cauldron of 1967. She is a mem- ber of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority and was sponsored by Alpha Tau Omega- Among Suzanne s activi lies and accomplishments are President of WSGA and Best ii For everything there is a season And for every university there is a man A man who exemplifies its most hoped for standards who represents its founding ideals who contributes to its scholarship who recognizes with perception its possibilities who is held with respect by his colleagues who loves its students. The Senior Class of 1967 and the Cauldron Staff proud- ly dedicate the 1967 Cauldron to such a man. A man for all seasonsâ Dr Paul Ml Cousins [4 1 The success and perhaps the existence of free- dom- in America depends upon the personal responsibility of the average college graduate. At Mercer we seek to maintain! an intense cul- ture of these qualities, and to moke instinctive their practice and philosophy. In a democratic society, each person must discharge obligations correlative to the privileges of citizenship. The history of Mercer's endeavor involves much more than may be recorded here, but her found- ers would take pride in her accomplishment, from- which her sons and daughters derive in- spiration to carry on. In a particular sense, our greatest obligation is to prepare students for understanding and devoted citizenship. The strength of our adversaries lies in their love of country and their passion for knowledge. It is imperative that we emulate their devotion for our better purpose. What each of us receives from democracy, we must be prepared' to give in the defense of it. As this yearbook brings back memories of these campus days, I hope if may renew your determination to live intelli- gently and courageously in the world you shall help to make. 17 RUFUS CARROLTON HARRIS Contents Features 20 Activities 38 Sports 72 Beauties 96 Greeks 110 Liberal Arts 168 18 Staff Co-Editors: C .1 j Pete Black Business Manager: 8eih Br-r .Ti Copy: Sue Wa ker Photographer: M r Fcaluros: Margaret Nix Linda M Gatrah Activities: Sports: Connie Heidf Beauties: Rachel Cc Susan Murt Greeks: Jim Resseger Melissa MCLeod Liberal Arts: Bare in-j E I:H Law; Nancy PolloHy Nurses: F' âą â r â â Pharmacy: Ron Myri-clc 19 Features Rush and registration . . . Sports 70 71 Coach Bobby Wilder's Bruins started the season with a banq as they reeled off seven straight victories before losing to tough Georgia Southern. Some of the highlights of this season s play was the game with Tampa, where the Bears got sweet revenge for an earlier loss: the Horne- coming game with Samford, which was close all the way, before Samford sealed the victory in the closing minutes of play; and the home game with Southern which Mercer got revenge by beating this team 93-74. The Bears looked good all season, especially the playmaking and shoot- ing of Sophomore Jud Roberts, the hustle of Freshman Robert Belloir, and the all-round ploy of captain Steve Moody, the only Senior on the team. Moody led the Bears in rebounds, and with each one He grabbed he raised his record a little higher, finally finishing his career with 1068 rebounds, Roberts led in the scoring department, averaging II6J points per game. The outlook for the Bears next year is extremely bright, especially if they can come up with an adequate replacement for Steve Moody, who has been a starter on the Bear team for four years. I monkey lime Coach Claude Smith labeled this year for the Bears as a rebuilding year. His starting nine consist- ed mainly of Freshmen, with as many as five start- ing a game. But this was not to hold the Bears back. They played fine ball all year and finished the season with a respectable 13-9 record, getting un- expected superb pitching from Freshman Mark Steinbeck and outstanding fielding from Robert Belloir and Chester Pierce, two other Freshmen starters. This complemented the play of catcher Phil Jones, third baseman Rufus Dowell, center fielder Chuck Ogburn, and jack-of-all-positions Mike Crook. Charlie Stewart was the big man on the mound for the Bears, compiling a 6-2 record and holding big Miami to only two runs in I 3 and 1 3 innings before being lifted The Auburn game was another highlight of this season's play. Hurler Mark Steinbeck held the SEC champions scoreless for 8 innings before being lifted in the ninth. A grand slam in this game sent the Bears down to defeat 4-3. The outlook for next season looks extremely good, if the Red Dog can come up with some pitching to complement that of Steinbeck 82 si Does it hurt? A bass hi will do.
