A. B. ANTHONY In the dignity of the noblest sense, he has instructed us, encouraged us, and led us by his example. Always ready to understand, to sympathize, to laugh, he has given freely of his time, his talents, and himself. A gift of spirit on his part which, in countless ways, builds the morale of students and aids them in the quest for learning and good citizenship has meant throughout the years a greater Mercer University. With the respect and gratitude that are so rightfully his, we dedicate this 1953 Cauldron to Dr, A. B. Anthony. dministration The approval by the Georgia Baptist Convention on November ifi, 1954, of the recommendations of the Education Commission created by and serving under that body presages a new era in Mercer’s histon,'. Those recommendations envision financial support adequate to provide for much needed housing, class- room, and recreational facilities on the campus. Approximately two million dollars was allocated by the Convention to Mercer University for such purposes. Since the Convention has specified that these funds must be matched by an equal amount raised from funds and alumni, Mercer University is embark- ing on a four million dollar program of improvements and expansion. Equally significant is the deter- mination of the faculty and the administration to raise the prestige of the institution by a continually improving program of instruction and a better organized curriculum. These advances are all directed toward one overarching purpose: the development of men and women in whom are to be found wise learning, unimpeachable integrity and full loyalty to the Highest. G. B. Of the organization s many activities, the major project is the annual Bear Day Parade and Homecoming Weekend, the high point of the school year In addition to its usual accomplishments, the 1954-55 Association reached a goal for which conscientious Mercer students had vainly worked in past years. Immediately after taking office in the spring of 1954, the Association propoced an honor system which was adopted by the student body. Its success has been outstanding and it is a source of pride for every Mercer student. 20 Cl uitrr Dun Arti Mimpr H4 DDV MOOW Cauldron Editor ISAKhAKA SEN FT CiulJriui lluunru PHIL TAYLOR Student Activities Committee Student Government Awtijtim Arrival In the Dorm Freshmen and transfers arrived at Mercer to be greeted by big sisters and big brothers, upper- classmen who returned to school early to help the new Mt-rtcrians learn their way around campus, to explain dormitory rules, and make the first few days easier in every way There were faculty mem- bers who introduced them to the history, ideals, and purposes of the University—parties and recep- tions which introduced them to each other By registration day, the nesv students were already a part of Mercer. ANDREW PHILIP MONTAGUE Mother Montague There is no more fitting way to dose the Mercer annual than with a tribute to a person such as Mother Montague who has given many years of service to our school. Always a pleasing smile and a friendly disposition and time to counsel when there arc troubles. This year you retire. Mother Montague, but you will never really retire from our hearts or from the hearts of men and women who have had the good fortune of letting a little of your life touch their lives. 21S
