E. P. A successful rushing season brought twenty-three pledges to help the old sisters move into their new suite. With fun as the main objective, Chi Omega Fraternity launched its first major party of the year-a hay- ride. The entertainment was furnished by the new pledges. The hayride seemed to kindle the flame of later flourishing romances. To make Christmas complete even before leaving for the holidays, a party was given for the underprivileged chil- dren in Macon. To start the year of '51, the Chi Omegas held Open House for the fra- ternities, The trophy case-a gift from the pledge class-completed the furnishings of the suite. ln the spring the Chi O's thoughts turned to their annual spring dance. Emerging from amid crepe paper, scotch, tape, cardboard, gilt, and shouts from the Shrine Manager, ap- peared the theme of My Blue Heaven. The presentation of the new officers made the evening complete. During the course of the year, pins, rings, and wedding bells kept us ex- cited and hopeful. This year was filled with many unforgettable events: The Cafe de Parie, the formal dance, the parties, and the pledges who took a part in win- ning Bear Day. Also will be remembered the select- ing of the sweetheart, pushing Pelham's car, and luxing Teddies Several new characters appeared in our midst, including such names as Colonel Conner, Duff Brown, Soft Shoe Hennecy, Machine Mouth Pittman, Sac Pelham, Questions Turton, and Mad Man Simmons. The combination of Fallin and Deadwyler's ver- bal earthquakes and Lunceford and Lowe's operatic tremors caused several mass evacuations to the co-op while Conner and Hennecy remained behind to recite their poetry. The long arm of Uncle Sam snatched Al, Mac, Wayne, Floyd, and Tal from our midst, and is now in the process of reaching again. All in all, ATO prospered with many good offi- cers and men, and in their annals will be found in years to come that l95O-5l was the year of years. Watch out there, Malcolm. Also people were saying that the season would be miserable for them. But one coach, about 20 enthusiastic players, and a few eager hopefuls kept a gaze into the crystal ball and layed aside all talk from fans and sportswriters. They knew what they had and they knew what to do with it. All said and done, the Bears, under the excellent tutoring of their coach, Jim Cowan, flashed through the season with good and bad breaks. Approaching the conference tourney with a 13 won and nine lost record, the Bears were seeded in the number two spot with the top position going to Florida State University. First in the tourney came Oglethorpe, and then Florida Southern. The Bears looked great in victory, and they took the first two rounds with ease and entered the finals. With Porter Gymnasium packed to the brim for the finale, the Bears played their hearts out not only for themselves or the school but for the coach who told them that he would be leaving for the Navy the next June and that the championship meant a lot to him. But it took a lot of work to move into a position that high. With stellar player Glenn Wilkes gone from last year's team and with Mayes Dobbins also missing, it knocked a few props from the combina- tion and Cowan had to mold a new quintette. He had Lamar Clements, Glenn Cassell, Bob Reeder, Emory Wilson, and a few others left from the previous season to give him a good start. Newcomers, headed by Bobby Wilder, freshman Bill Harris and freshman BERT SCHWARTZ Guard Richard Reid, broke in with the squad nicely and then Cowan got to work. First on the list came Oglethorpe and that gave Cowan a chance to feel out the majority of the boys on his team. The Bears dropped the next two encoun- ters to strong opponents, Georgia and Florida State. After winning three straight the Bears headed deep into trouble. They began to slow down, they didn't click as they had once done, and their shooting was off. As a result, they were defeated in the next five contests, and it took the fray with the Georgia Bull- dogs to pull them out of the slump. Even though the scoreboard spelled out a 60-58 victory for the Bull- Wllder takes ball from Georgiu's Minton Williams. TOM COLQUITT Reid scores against Florida State. Guard Reid sinks goal against Southern. dogs, it should have been the other way because the Bears outplayed and outclassed the larger opponents from Athens. After the Georgia heartbreaker, the Mercerians moved down into Florida and returned with two wins and then they were on the victory trail again. After a second win over Howard, Birmingham Southern managed to stop them and then they hit the come- back path remarkably and took the next four contests, dropped one, and then took a couple more wins to round out the season. During the latter part of the season, the highlighted game of the list was the Georgia Teachers fray held in Porter Gymnasium. The Teachers were rated to be the best small college team in the South and earlier in the season they had severely stomped the Bears. But this time the tide changed and the Bears surprised their visitors by handing them one of their very few defeats. Lamar Clements placed his name among those of the great players in Mercer's history. Clements, just an average player last year, improved so much this season that many classed him as a better player than Wilkes of past fame. Clements was captain of the squad and during the first part of the season he was scoring around lo points per game. But towards the end of the season his hook shot was working to perfection and then he was blazing through 30 Little Bobby Wilder rebounds ball for Bears. points a game. ln the tournament no one was able to stop the fabulous center. He was picked on the Dixie Conference All Tourney team and the first team All-State. Other players gained fame during the season. Glenn Cassell, one of the best defensive men on the Bear team and in the conference, was another sight to behold with his ball handling. He was named to the All-Tourney team and the second team All-State. Richard Reid, a freshman, was an excellent play- maker and floor man and his reputation as a ball player is rising fast even though he is new in the college ranks. He placed a berth on the All Tourney team too. But credit is due to the others too, because without the cooperation of the whole squad, the championship would have never come this way. Emory Wilson, Bob Reeder, Bill Harris, Dopey Reynolds, Bobby Wilder, John Jewitt, Tom Colquitt, Dave Harris, Bert Schwartz, and the others deserve a big hand. And to the men behind the scenes, the Baby Bears, the Caul- dron Sports staff salutes you, too, because it was you who kept up that never say die spirit and worked eagerly and hard to give the boys out front the needed practice that successfully sent them through the great year. l Wilder passes ball to Emory Wilson, Clements shooting a right hand hook, Colquitt and Jewett in the background. The Bear Baseball Team with few re- turning veterans faced a touch schedule which included Georgia, Auburn, and G. T. C. When Coach Mel Mayfield took over the coaching reins of the '5l tennis squad, he had a scattering of leftovers from the past season and a few newcomers to fill the gap, At first many people gave little evidence of enthusiasm about the team since the net teams of the past were weak in their showing. But Mayfield and his ten-man squad plus student manager Winkie Harris got a jump on the regular season and opened up their rigid training during the fall months before going into winter hibernation. First of all on the foe schedule came Concordian Seminary, a strong outfit from St. Louis. The Bears showed no signs of open-match nervousness and captured the contest by a close margin. Then the netters ran into other strong teams, such as Georgia, Indiana, Auburn, and Florida State, and by press time they had established a five-won and four-lost record with the seasonal half-way mark not yet reached. Perhaps the highlight of the early season schedule was a double victory over the Auburn Tigers, members of the Southeastern Conference. Coach Mayfield is making his debut in the coaching profes- sion with this year's team, and his very successful first season outfit will carry him a long way in the ranks. The two top performers on the team are Sellers Parker and John Schumpert. Parker, playing his third year with the Bears, is the team captain, while Schumpert is a sparkling newcomer to the Bears' fold who has been holding down the number one singler spot. Gus Rice, Sonny Tharp, and Keith Benning, all letter men, returned and are the number three, five, and seven players re- spectively. Two new sensations from the line-up are Waldo Wood- cock and Bert Schwartz. Both netters are improved players, and Coach Mayfield expects great things from the two before the end of the season. l John Schumpert Sellers Parker GUS Rice Waldo Woodcock Madden Reid BEN' 5Cl1W0ff1 Left to right: Waldo Woodcock, Jack Perry, John Schumperr, Sonny Tharp, Gus Rice, Keith Benning and Sonny Tharp Harry Challin, Keith Benning, George Gemung, Madden Reid, and Sellers Parker. I.M.A. ALPHA TAU OMEGA I95I intramural football saw one of the greatest climaxes of all times bring its season to a halt with the Kappa Sigma seven emerging with their second straight crown. Competition was stiff throughout the whole season, and a disputed decision in the Kappa Sigma-Phi Delta Theta fray sent new fire into the works as it was those two teams that met for the championship. The protested game lasted only two plays, but it was enough for the Sigs to upset the Phi Delts. ' f Never before in Intramural basketball history has the final outcome been so unpredictable as was the i950-5l season. All of the favorites dropped by the wayside gradually and the darkhorse Sigma Nu five began a conquering spree that swept them through nine straight victories after dropping their first two contests. At mid-season, Kappa Alpha, Sigma Nu, Ministers, and Alpha Tau Omega were in the top running along with defending champions Kappa Sigma. But as the season progressed towards the climax, Sigma Nu, with their powerful fast-breaking offense, was stepping into the limelight. After the league's final battle, the Nus found them- selves in a tie with Kappa Alpha and the Ministers. Drawings placed KA and SNu in the first round of the play-offs and the Nus took that one and then defeated the Ministers in the finale to capture the crown.
