SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY The Christianity department includes j large per- centage of the students at Mercer and several of the outstanding faculty personalities. Headed by Dean Hansford I). Johnson, the tall, friendly fellow who always lus a ready smile and a Hearty greeting, the department includes Dr. H, L. Jiatts, the philosopher who has an ever-present stock of anecdotes which he will rifllc through at one’s convenience; Miss “Tony Pates who manages to get away from her duties as counselor at M. K, I , to teach Freshman Christianity courses par excellence; Dr. Theron D. Price, who rites ''higher” than anyone else on campus, James Stertz is our new Director of Religious Activities who says, Be good, but don't let your halo show!” Dr. Johnson Dr. Batts and Dr. Pri« i Mr, S i i k i

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT Our English Depiriim-ru is among the best in be found, and llu number oi students majoring in Fng- li-.li affirms the popularity of its varied program. Although Dr. I-. I . Vandiver is a newcomer, lu- lus already become .1 well-established part of the University. Shakespeare seems to be one of Dr. Van- diver's favorites, and if you're looking for an inter- esting course, be sure to1 take one from him. I lit complete naturalness and a fine sense of humor have won for him a place in the heart of all his students. Mrs. Helen B, 1 1.vmale, Associate Professor of English, is loved by everyone in her sphere of influ- ence. Why ' One student explained it, saying simply, She’s just so human and understanding. We admire her for her fine character anti lofty ideals. Professor W, T. Smalley returned to us this fall from the University of Chicago after being away for several months. He is very thorough in his work and is an authority both in literature and grammar. Dr, Vandiver reads a letter. Miss Mary Jordan Sanders. Miss Mabel Brantley, Mrs. Mattie Barnes, and Mrs. Vernon Wallace arc the other members of the English Department who efficiently instruct the ignorant pupils in grammar and literature.
