J ON THE GRIDIRON COACH BOBBY HOOKS Coach Bobby Hooks came to Mercer when the de-emphasis program was inaugurated and brought as his assistant, Billy Smith, a former Mercer star. Hooks has been coaching ever since he left the University of Georgia. He has coached at Riverside, G. M. C.. and Valdosta. His teams have consistently been good. Billy Smith graduated from Mercer in 1938 after playing three years of varsity football and two of varsity basketball. His many friends were glad Lo sco him return to Mercer as assistant coach. The school year 1941-42 saw the end of inler-collegiatc sporta at Mercer for the duration. Coaches Hooks and Smith were called to the colors and the officials decided it would be best to cease intercollegiate sports until after the war. The past season saw freshmen playing on the varsity for the First time. This was the first year here for Hooks and Smith and they pul out n Fighting team. It was an inexperienced team with freshmen playing a large part of the time. It was a (cam worthy of the Mercer tradition and they never gave up. COACHES HOOKS AND SMITH MERCER-GEORGIA Mercer opened its 1941 season against the Georgia Bulldogs in Macon. The Bears were greatly handicapped by lack of experience and were badly outclassed by Sinkwich, Davis and Co, Although defeated 81-1), the Mercer team never quit Fighting, and the freshmen on the team gained a lot of valuable experience. BEARS DOWN TEACHERS The Bears returned to gridiron warfare against the Teachers from Statesboro and proved they could play ball by defeating Statesboro 25-0. The first seven minutes of play showed that Mercer greatly outclassed the light team from the Toucher's College. During the first quarter and most of the second, Mercer rolled up first downs and points almost at will, but the boys from Statesboro never gave up. The second half saw fumbles, penalties, and missed sig- nals thwart many fine Scoring opportunities for the Bears. Outstanding for the Bears were Yancey, Page, Blaylock and Harrison in the backfield. In the line, rjhillips and Brundagc were in under many of the Statesboro plays. Ā«- VI, PORT ER flELD r Ralph Aitin and Rudy Woodward Dot Arte Kay M ERCER - WOFFOR D Playing inspired hall, the Bears kept en the comeback trail by upsetting a favored Wolford team 20-14 Trailing most ol tin- game because of the brilliant running and all-round play of one Hoggy Hilton of Wofford, Mercer went into the lead on a 74-yard flash by 'ā€˜Rabbit-1 Hodges, and Wofford was never able to overcome this lead, Delving into the statistics of the game we find Mercer making 13 first downs to B for Wofford anti Raining 261 yards net to 135 for Wolford. Hodges was the star because of his brilliant run, but Harrison did some fine punting, and Page. Blaylock and Yancey played good ball. ROLLINS ROLLS OVER MERCER The Bears next journeyed to Orlando, Fla-, and were swamped by Rollins to the tune of 52-t). Mercer showed a complete reversal of form from its previous game and played lifeless ball throughout the game. Grady Ray of Rollins personally accounted for five of Rollins' eight tallies. The Tars rolled up 22 first downs against the Mercer team. BEARS BEAT PRESBYTERIAN Mercer returned to Macon and before a Homecoming crowd successfully turned back Presbyterian 19-12. The Bears surprised even their most ardent supporters by overwhelming the favored Blue Stockings. Presbyterian scored first, but Mercer soon went ahead by one point and was never headed again. The outstanding play of the day was made by Blaylock, who took a lateral from Yancey and ran 80 yards for the score. Yancey and Page were outstanding along with Blaylock in the backfield, while Pittman. Dowel and Phillips played most of the game in the Presbyterian secondary. Powell Berwick Hodges MERCER MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE The Hears next encountered Mississippi College and lost a hcortbreaker to the Choctaws by 27-19. Mercer scored once in each ol the second, third and fourth periods. Late in the final quarter the Bruins took the ball down to the Mississippi 5-yard line but were unable to take the ball over. Carlso Phillips scored first for Mercer when he took a pass from Blaylock on the Choctaw 25 and went over for a score, Tony Page smashed through the Mississippi defense for another score in the third quarter, and Yancey scored the final marker on a run in the fourth period, Hodges kicked the only extra point for Mercer. Fulton was outstanding for the Choctaws and ran forty yards for one score, Horrison Rail.fi -r ' : c U GEORGIA GAVE—SCOOTER YANCEY AROUND END Dav.s MERCER GAINS AROUND END NEWBERRY HEATS BEARS Mercer had all its hopes for a possible tie for first place in the South Atlantic Conference vanish when the Newberry Indians surprised the Bears and defeated them by a score of 32-15. Mercer entered the game as the favorite since Presbyterian had beaten Newberry and the Bears had conquered Presbyterian, The Bears ran into more trouble than they expected and the Indians, led by Rondel and Waldrop, were too much for the Bruins, Shirley was the outstanding player for Mercer with his great defensive work. BLAYLOCK GETS THROUGH f D ckey Shepard Shirley Bergen PJaying with a number of good men oil the sidelines due to injuries, the Mercer team journeyed to Birmingham and lost to the Howard team by 27-6. Jimmie Tarrant, who had proved very troublesome to Mercer in recent years, was again too much (or the Bears, and he played a big part in the defeat of the Bruins. CHATTANOOGA DOWNS BRUINS Ending their first season under Coaches Hooks and Smith, the Bears were soundly beaten by Chattanooga. 40-13. The Mercer team was the under-dog against a strong Moccasin team that had lost but one game during the season.
