For this gentleman is one of the most learned gentlemen on the Mercer faculty, He has more degrees than any other teacher at Mercer. And his great knowledge of the law is per haps the smallest of his many virtues. Genial and understanding, his stories provide many a bright moment in the career of the boys. His sage advice on the many questions of the day, especially to the future lawyers is a highlight of the Mercer Law School. From 1928 until 1933 only one building of importance was erected on the campus. This was the law building. Since that date, however, under the able direction of Dr. Dowell. Sherwood Hall has been rebuilt from within, the library building was rebuilt, a new gymnasium was erected and the co-op was moved to the old gymnasium. More recent accomplishments include the reconditioning of the Biology building, the erection of Columbus Roberts Hall, the reconditioning of the Chapel, and the building of the girls' dormitory. If he is not good enough or big enough to play on the varsity squad, there is always the intra-mural program. And the intra- mural program has been enlarged to such an extent that almost every imag- inable kind of sport is represented. In addition to the varsity teams of football, basketball, tennis, etc., the intra-mural program consists of basketball, tennis, horseshoes, softball, touch football, golf, volleyball, etc. So, if you wanta get some exercise here at Mercer, you can’t say we haven't got the facilities. Just pick a sport and go on out and slay it The men pictured here are what might be called the sport leaders of Mercer, In the first picture arc the football coaches and the captain of the team, Lake Russell, Captain Tony Mason, Joe Kilgrow and Joe Dougherty are depicted during a practice session. Dougherty serves as basketball coach as well as foot hall mentor. In the other picture are shown Mercer's new football mentors, Billy Smith, and Bobby Hooks. Hooks, the new head coach, comes from Valdosta, and is expected to put new life in the Bear football squad. Smith, a former Mercer grid star, is well known here and Will give valuable assistance to Hooks. The school your IMO-41 is a memorable year In the annals of football al Mercor. During this year the complete football program was revamped aril placed on a smaller scale. An entire new coaching stall was procured and. in fact, the entire system was reorganized. For awhile the students of Mercer were afraid and rightly so that the trustees of the institution were going t« abolish the grid sport here. And the chances arc chut they would have done just that if the students hadn’t gotten together and petitioned the trustees to continue intercollegiate football. Thus our football program was saved. Although the policy of the school now is to de- emphasize football and play only the smaller schools as much as possible, there is much hope for Mercer football in the future- Mercer next year will play Georgia, the arch rival, and this game will be the nucleus around which the season will be built. Gone arc the games with Tennessee, L.S.U.. Alabama, and the other top-notch teams but here to stay are the games with Georgia and possibly Georgia Tech. The students of Mercer have great cause to look to the future with confi- dence and faith that the Bears will continue lo dis- play their wares on the gridiron and with much more ferocity than in past years. Ue Qaaokei 1940-41 was the last year of Coach Lake Russell's stay at There is no doubt about the fact that Coach will he missed. During his long stay here he oectim- plishcd much fur Mercer. It was during his regime that the Bears made such fine showings against some uf the finest teams in the country. He developed same of the finest players m Uie South. Although his last year here was a disastrous one, in some ways, stilt in spots the future of the team looks in no way discouraging, This year was also the last for Joe Dougherty the back fie Id coach Probably Joe's greatest contributions to Mercer were his basketball teams and his intra- mural program. Joe formerly played under Major Bob Neyland. at Tennessee. It is doubtful also whether Jin' Kilgrow will be back next year. There are many on the campus who will be glad if he returns. Of recent Alabama tame. Kilgruv. enjoyed great popularity among the players and was a guiding influence throughout the year Malcolm Thomas Center Qucnton Plunkett Guard Raymond O'Quinn End Frank Wary Tackle Tony Page Back READY FOft ACTION BEARS BOW TO VOLS Mercer opened the '40 football season with the powerful Tennessee Volunteers at Knoxville. Tile final score was 49-0 but that fails to indicate the great fight put up by the courageous Mercer squad. On several occasions the for- ward wall strengthened to turn liack the thrusts of such buckfiold slars as Johnny Butler, Bob Foxx, and Van Thompson, For Mercer. Tony Page. Elton Wall, and Frank Mn -a were the heroes in defeat, but the entire team,de- serves credit for holding the mighty Volunteers to a 14-0 lliil ft I me score. BRUINS HOLD BAM A TO 20-0 With the Tennessee encounter behind them the Bears invaded Tuscaloosa to test the strength of the Alabama Crimson Tide but came out on the short end of a 20-0 score. The Tide scored in the opening minutes of play on a sustained drive, and again before the half ended on a blocked punt. Just after the third quarter began, the Alabama team scored its final touchdown by means of a Rex Mcllvoinc WoHoce Lumpkin Joe Dowd Bock End End A% THCUSAND5 PI CHEER line busti ns spree. Mercer’s only scoring threat came at the end of the first half when Tony Page intercepted Gam- mons pass on the ’Bama 30 and returned it to the 12-vard lino before he was forced out of bounds by the entire Tide s iuad. The half-time gun sounded at this point ending the threat. In the Mercer line, the piny of the Senior centers. Thomas and Richter, was outstanding, white in the back- field, the efforts of Page. Karsznin and Howtand featured the Bruins play. TIGERS CLAW BRUINS 2(M After a two weeks’ layoff the Bears invaded the lair of the L.S.U. Tigers at Baton Rouge for their third straight test in the “big leagues. The Louisiana boys proved to be just a little too strong for Mercers little Bears and the locals felt before the onslaught to the tune of 2D-0. The Mercerians caught the fancy of the L.S.U. fans by holding the highly favored Tigers to single touchdowns in the first three periods and nearly matching the winners' kicking game. Mercer stiffened against the L.S.U. reserves in the fourth period and held the Tigers scoreless. In the final period the Bears staged two first down drives, featuring the passing of Rod Blaylock. It was the first appearance of the Bears on the home stomping grounds and was a game which revealed the real ability of the Mercer “scat backs,” Leading ground gainers of the day were little Carl Stager. Blaylock, and 'Scooter Yancey. Longest runs of the game were turned in by the high stopping Yancey who climaxed his feats with a 72-yard run to cross the double stripes untouched. Sophomore tackles Bob Holt and Bob Wagner, guard Jitn Wary and center Lou Popp were out- standing in the Mercer line. At the end positions Bill Nee, Don Spice, and Pug'” O'CJuimi turned in good work. Tins game resulted in the most heart-breaking defeat nf the entire season for the Mercer squad. The fighting Bears led throughout the greater part of the game only to be lopped 3-2 by a Presbyterian field goal with only three minutes of playing time left. Mercer had taken the lead in the second period with a safety and it appeared that the two-point margin would mean victory. Wet grounds, which hampered the play of Mercer's seat backs, and the Blue Stocking passing combination of Mcisky and Sutton were the deciding factors in the defeat of the Bruins. IN THE DRESSING ROOM — CHOCTAWS SCALP BEARS 2tt-6 The Bears, still not fully recovered from their early season conflicts with ‘big league teams, returned Hone the next Saturday for the ever color- ful Homecoming Classic. This turned out to be a disheartening 36-fi defeat at the hands of Mississippi College's Choctaws before a large crowd of old gratis and loyal studenLs. The Bears started till on the wrong foot as the visitors scored what proved to be the winning points in the first minute of play. From this point the Mercer boys settled down and held the opposition scoreless for the remainder of the first half. On the first play of the second quarter, Leo Lazar. Mercer's triple- threat soph star, broke away around end for a brilliant 46-yard touchdown run. The half ended with the Bears trailing 7-6. but the Choctaws opened up after intermission and pushed over three more touchdowns before the final whistle sounded. James McLeod and Lonnie Tad lock engineered the Choctaw victory by ground and by air. Leo Lazar and Tony Page turned in excellent performances for the hard-working Bruins. TONY S ON THE LOOSE— MOCCASINS NIP BEARS 20 6 The determined Bears journeyed back into Tennessee for the last game of the season, but the old scoring punch was still lacking and the Chattanooga Moccasins outset red them 2U-t . It was anybody’s ball game all the way through but Mercer lacked punch at the right time and two touchdown drives were stopped on the 14 and the 7. The Moccasins used a tricky ground and aerial offense to manufacture their three scoring plays. The Bruins recovered a Chattanooga fumble on the Moccasins' 40-yard line early in the second quarter and pushed on over the double stripes for their only score of the game, ’‘Scooter Yancey made the score from the four-line on a drive around the end. The placement was blocked. The Bears' defeat gave the Tennesseans part claim to the Dixie Conference title and ended the season for both teams.
