BLAIR Afiltctic Director JOHN ■'COTTON HARRISON Ah« jkI Ccuch THE 1936 BEARS Tin Upt and Down5 of the 19)b Tram at Viewed by Hunter IIvest, former Sports Editor of the Cluster. Here was a football Team—the Mercer team of 1936—which dll loyal sons of Mercer will never forget; a team which has known alike the sting of defeat and the joy of conquest., through it all emerging with courageous spirits, deriving new hope from each victory and new determination from each defeat. It it easy to write superlatives of a championship team, but here was a team which lost six of its ten hard games. Hampered by misfortune and injuries, the Bears could score only 9 5 points during the season, while they allowed their opponents 104. Yet they succeeded in crossing the goal of their rivals, the Georgia Bulldogs, in the toughest game of the entire campaign. Here was a team that had a reputation for possessing to an admirable degree that intangible something known as spirit, The sport scribes said this quality would earry them a long way when their other weapons were inadequate. And it did. So it is that this daring and courageous young squad will live in Mercer football history. Third run: Morris, Bryant, Mrhreoi, Fiirpisrick, Hicks, Rowch, Hitter, Tyron, Hum. S io-aJ rou.' Ed e, Corona, Lawrence, Smith. Owen. Kuime, Mattox. Johnson. Barrow. Ftrit tow Hobmicui, Dodd, Mamalak , Martin, Bare-more, Rainey, Bloodworth, Vainer. BEARS CURTAIN RAISER Centennial Stadium, Sept. 18—Under the glaring lights of the home field Mercer's Bears Cracked the lid off their 1916 football Campaign tonight with a 40-0 victory over determined but powerless eleven from South Georgia Teachers’ College at Statesboro. Exhibiting a diversified attack, the Bears turned loose a barrage of power plays which the visitors were unable to check. Ed Varner produced the longest run of the day, but the entire squad was able to join in the parade. MERCER 6—GEORGIA 15 Athens, Ga., Sept. 26—The annual tilt with Georgia was played today, and superior reserve strength again told the story. It was Al Owen who scored for the Bears in the second period, snagging Blood- worth’s pass over the goal line. The Mighty Midget,’’ Mercer’s triple-threat back, gave the Bulldogs plenty of trouble and the fans plenty to talk about this afternoon. They were calling him one of the best backs csrer to play in Sanford Stadium. Tyson and the other Bruin linemen also turned in steady performances. .Mercer lost the services of Varner and Mam.ilakis through injuries. IIICKS Ctttftr FITZPATRICK Tarklr - 1,. . - VARNER B tA 19 3 6 DEDICATING ALBANY’S STADIUM Albany. Ga„ Oct. 2—The Bears and the Stormy Petrels of Oglethorpe met on neutral grounds tonight to celebrate the formal opening of South Georgia's new stadium before 1 crowd of S.000. It proved to he a Mercer celebration, and Billy Smith led his mates to a 20-6 win before his home folks. A tricky offense enabled the Petrels to score first early in the game, but the Bears soon took control of the situation with Bloodworth and Smith banging their way to repeated gains behind good interference. It was the seventh consecutive victory over the Birds. GLOOMY SATURDAY Birmingham, Ala., Oct. 10—It was a bad day for the local boys on Legion Field in Birmingham. Nothing they had would click, and the bewildered Bears went down in defeat fi-Q before an inspired Panther eleven from Birmingham-Southern. They were outplayed in every department of the game by a supposedly weaker team. It was truly their off day and they were glad to sec it pass. SCORELESS TIE CevtfnXiai STADIUM, Oct. 16—Returning home, the Bears battled die highly- toured Howard Bulldogs to a scoreless tie tonight Mercer made the only threatening gestum, and a goal line punch was the only need. Little Allan Woodworth supplied the thrilling feature of the game when he broke away on a brilliant K-yard punt return for a touchdown, only to have the play called back and a penalty inflicted. Wright Bazemore and the Bruin linemen gave a splendid display of defensive power. HOMECOMING Centennial Stadium, Oct. 23—Today was Homecoming and tonight was to climax the celebration, but there was too much Purple Hurricane from Furman. Mercer played one of its best games, but it was not enough, and the Hurricane swept back the Bears 20-5. For the first time the linemen found themselves out charged by a heavier forward wall, and the backs hid to cope with the most versatile passing attack seen this year. Again it was Bloodwcrth who provided the spark. His 56-yard touchdown gallop will go down in the record books as one of the longest runs of the season. THE OLD JINX Chattanooga, Tent ., Nov, 7—True to tradition, it was raining on Chamber- lain Field. The crippled Bears slipped and slid on even terms with U. C.’s dangerous MAM ALA SIS Cur MARTIN Bad 19 3 6 CHASTAIN MORRIS Bstk Moccasins or three quarters but let up just Ions enough in the fourth to allow the lone rouchdown that plunged them into their fourth defeat of the season, 6-0. It was Homecoming day for the Moccasins this time and almost a repetition of previous Chattanooga games. SWAN SONG Centennial Stadium, Nov. 14—The victory-starved Bruins took out all their troubles on a more or less helpless team of P, C. Blue Stockings tonight and won 20-6 in the last home game of the year. Ii was the Swan Song for seven seniors, and all seven played an important part in the victory. But it v as an uphill fight. After having two touchdowns called back ■n the first half, Mercer was forced to come from behind to win after intermission. The more than 400 yards gained from scrimmage is evidence of the power in that last half drive. THE ORANGE BOWL Coral Gables, Fla., Nov, 20—Mercer played the University of Miami tonight in the celebrated Orange Bowl, and the weather was rather warm. Perhaps the Bears played their best game of the season, at least in the first half when they continually drove the unbeaten Hurricane back deep in its own territory. The fast half was different, and the Bruins wilted before the attack to lose 13-0. ROBINSON B tk MiHRENS EnJ The conclusion of the 1936 grid season saw Mercer1 sterling back. Allan Bloodworth, being mentioned on several All-American selectioni. In addition Woodworth and Tyson were awarded positions on the Di ic Conference ream. Letters were awarded to twenty- three men. and seven of this number, Smith, Varner, Morris, Bloodworth, Mamalakis, Tyson, and Captain Dodd have fought their last battle for the Orange and Black. They were a fighting bunch—the Bears of 19i6, CURTAIN FALLS Starkvilt i , Ml ., Nov. 2 —-The Beirs ended the season today against the powerful Southeastern Conference team from Mississippi State College, Previously labeled the crippled Bears,” every other man in the brave little squad literally hobbled onto the field today. Yet that spirit was still with them, and they fought the stronger State team to a standstill in the first part of the contest before finally giving way to the onslaught of Pickle, Gclatka, and Co. Major Ralph Saw used four complete teams against the Mercer team this afternoon, and through it alt came the Mighty Midget,1 ending his career in a blaze of glory'. Among his accomplishments for the day were a 76-yard punt and a spectacular 41-yard run from punt formation. The final score was 3 2-0. VARSITY BASKETBALL SQUAD i bt: Martin, Shellhouwr, Stliti .
