Due largely to inexperience, the 1982 Varsity Baseball Team strug- gled through a season of highs and lows. The starting team was com- posed of five freshmen, one sopho- more, one junior, and two seniors. The pitching staff were freshmen, with the exception of one senior. De- spite the disappointments of losing, the team improved dramatically. As the season came to a close, the Hawks won six of their last nine games. The highlight of the year was the performance of Van Samples, soph- omore centerfielder, who led the na- tion with fifty stolen bases out of fifty-two attempts. The previous Mercer record was forty stolen bases held by Buzzy Mayo. Nineteen eighty-two was Coach Fountain's last year of coaching var- sity baseball. The 1983 team will be coached by Charlie Romano. The Hawks are expected to do extremely well with many returning players. Ta-:Q 169
