This retreat from school gives students and faculty the opportunity to get to know each other in surroundings that are less formal than the classroom. The theme of the conference was Challenge of the 80s. ' Topics for discussion included nucle- ar disarmament, wife abuse, and the impor- tance of education. Activities ranged from making homemade bread to singing songs around the campfire. A good time was had by all. A A., Mm , J it 4? 5 N f . I X. The team faced some seri- ous setbacks in the first half of its schedule. Juan Pelez, senior mid- fielder, was lost for most of the games with a knee injury. Freshman fullback Eddie Mills suffered a similar injury and was unable to play for the last half of the season. The Hawks' star goalie Skip Zit- zelsberger also suffered a serious in- jury. He, too, was sidelined for the last half of the season. Ron Jones and freshman Neill Renwick kept goal for the remainder of the sched- ule. In spite of these injuries, the Hawks had their second best season ever in intercollegiate play. They finished second in the lst Annual Mercer University Invitational Tournament, and two of their play- ers, Raymond and Gary Bardoul, were named to the All-District Soc- cer Team. The Hawks are looking forward to another good season in 1983. fu. . .., Q ,gs P-9' 163 ' A -. wx If if h wx viii S if rx f 0 ,. ,Q 164 www' W x Q31 .Q X' :W WAN: - W ,XA wwf Y x -Q, ww . 3 1S,,?, 5- y Q x ' x , Q 'Vi '4 , ' X ' -ann .- v, . .M X. f' , if www-A , N -ul' ...A 3,15-Q----vw M ' . The key to Mercer's success was strong serving with five players hav- ing a 90? or better average. Based on their season performance, Team Captain Cheryl Drust and junior Maria Smith were chosen by several coaches in the NAIA Division 25 as members on the six-player All-Dis- trict Team. Concluding the season with a sec- ond-place finish in the District 25 Championship, the Hawks look for- ward to another outstanding season in 1983. It is hoped that with the aid of scholarship money now available, the team will be better able to con- tinue its drive toward a national championship. The starting team was com- posed of five freshmen, one sopho- more, one junior, and two seniors. The pitching staff were freshmen, with the exception of one senior. De- spite the disappointments of losing, the team improved dramatically. As the season came to a close, the Hawks won six of their last nine games. The highlight of the year was the performance of Van Samples, soph- omore centerfielder, who led the na- tion with fifty stolen bases out of fifty-two attempts. The previous Mercer record was forty stolen bases held by Buzzy Mayo. Nineteen eighty-two was Coach Fountain's last year of coaching var- sity baseball. The 1983 team will be coached by Charlie Romano. The Hawks are expected to do extremely well with many returning players. Ta-:Q 169 ff 91,, 11 -'X: . Q, 'W' T ' ' aka A lah? While the Atlanta Falcons and the rest of the NFL were temporar- ily shut down due to the players' strike, MercerfAtlanta students and faculty occupied their free time with some football of their own. Flag football is part of the Intramu- ral Sports Program which satisfies the students' need for entertainment as well as competition. Each person participating in the program decid- ed which team he or she wanted to be a member of. The teams, includ- ing the Sasquatches, the Rono- saurus, the Studasaurus, the Tera- dactyls, the Sleestacks, and the Faculty team, competed after classes and on weekends with little interference with their studies. Fac- ulty and student team members alike had a good time with as many laughs as bruises and sore muscles. In the end, the Faculty team emerged victorious and claimed the championship. sqm!! -It f illil' , U., is ,. I 6-,g--1-g,.....1- -- -- 5 . 1 - .. .gg .
