Scholars . . . Musi- cians . . . Poets . . . And Artists . . . All achievers; all individuals; and all have their own place at Mercer Middle School. Each student strives to make a per- sonal gain, and each student thrives to celebrate freedom. At Mercer ... we are all unique through religion, talent, and dress; our accents differ as do our friends, and our tastes. We each create a different style. We then join with others in a friend- ly bond to produce a unified form. We have gathered from separate places and will again disperse and scatter to newfound homes, but while at Mercer we join behind the Raider spirit and create . . . Out of Many . . . One A detailed puzzle of people and passions - with tremendous spir- it .. . Mercer is a unified form-win- ning, cheering, growing, and learning. Changing in motion from year to year. Adapting in style from class to class. As each piece evolves the puzzle ma- tures. I I STRIVING AS MANY AC A crowd likes diversity. Individuals of differing talents and abilities combine to progress towards a single goal. Each person is important in his own right. A musician practices his instrument and learns the notes in order to create his own sound . . . Science is structured through basic elements - a unique basis of the chemical system . . . 4 HIEVING AS ONE In an achievement of unity one never stops to discover the pieces from which the whole is created. All individuals strive, but without each other, they will never achieve. . . . more important to the athlete than his personal wins are the wins of his team. ... a combination of sounds from individual instruments form a wonderful musical experience. . . . through the basic elements all creation is possible; they make discovery come alive. MAKING THE PIECES FIT I Each year the Yearbook staff honors the persons whom it feels has influenced its members the most by dedicating the yearbook to them. Rarely, however, have these persons been as involved in every aspect of student life as these instructors. Both teachers stand out at Mercer due to their never ending devotion to helping students. With deep affection and lasting respect the Yearbook staff proudly dedicates the Raider 1986 to: Ms. Susan Ethridge and Mrs. Zelene Foster 4.14 v Ms. Ethridge is a seventh grade Social Studies teacher. She is a very active person in both the school and extra curriculum activities. Ms. Ethridge is p resently serving as the advisor for the Model United Na- tions. In addition, she has advised the Student Advisory Council and she is involved in many other school activities. But what makes Ms. Ethridge stand out from the other teachers is her willingness to take part in every aspect of the school from dressing-up as a witch to being a friend to her students. Mrs. Zeline Foster is the PECE director. She has also taught En- glish. Mrs. Foster has been instru- mental in having many honors brought to Mercer. Her PECE students have often been featured in the Savannah News-Press as well as on local television stations. This dedicated, dynamic and will- ing teacher has also served as advisor to the YAC Club. In addi- tion, she has assisted in the plan- ning of the eighth grade prom activities. Mrs. Foster stands out from the other teachers because of her enduring devotion and integri- ty. A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops. - Henry Adams , ' ' ■. .■a f 1 M. MIDDLE SCHOOL PUNK-N ROCK AND WILD HAT DAY It would be hard to picture Mercer without all the spirit and imagination that the students and teachers possess. Every once in awhile Mercer people get a little carried away and go CRAZY. On such days you can find them wearing funny hats or maybe even dressed up like their favorite Rock Star. HALLOWEEN FUN Mercer caught the demon spirit on Halloween Day, October 31, 1985. The halls echoed with the sounds of laughter and squeals. Everywhere you looked you could see ghosts, goblins, witches, cheerleaders, and any other strange creature or per- son. Yes, this was sure one fun day . . . There was also a Halloween Dance that the PTA sponsored. Boy, was that fun!! They had popcorn, candy, coke, and of course there was the terrific music that made dancing a must. Calling all Ghosts and Goblins to roam the halls and make Mercer the Scariest place of all. GROWING PAINS The Middle School days are the most difficult in a student ' s life. When a person becomes a teenager, he finds himself taking on new responsibilities. Grades begin to matter, so the academic pressures increase and a social life begins to appear. Because these days are an impressionable age. Middle School memories will be some of the most pleasant, and the most painful; they will last forever. With recent changes in the curriculum, academic Hfe has become more challeng- ing. Students can become well-trained in the use of computers, or knowledge- able about the capitals of obscure countries. First- time oral reports can be really scary, as well as a parent ' s reaction to a less- than-desirable grade. With the challenge comes enjoy- ment of the Middle School days. HIGH SCHOOL, HERE WE THE UNEXPECTED JOYS OF GROWING UP The social life in the sixth through eighth grades pos- sesses many different parts. Some of the organizations sponsor movies, parties, dances, and dress-up days. These activities provide a rest from a rough school day. The days in Middle School provide a time to enjoy independence and social activity before faced with the pressure of High School MERCER ' S OLYMPIC GAMES Groves High School Track 100 Wheathill Road Garden City, Georgia May 9, 1986 18 Pf f One individual striving for excellence, contributing to a teana, a team incorporating the talent of its members to form a powerful structure, growing, developing, matur- ing: Olympics at Mercer. The future is mapped out ... or is it? Mercer prepares a student not only for academic achievement, but for personal success as well. Individuali- ty, independence, honor, and maturity are the traits that are nurtured and prepare students to cope with the Real World . The middle school experience may only require three years, but its effects have a continuous impact on the individual. The personalities, the talent, and the opinions of each student of Mer cer come together to form one, unified student body, one that works together and that achieves together. Both losses and victories affect the entire school, yet only one thing really matters: each individual achieves for the school and contributes his talents for the benefit of the student body as a whole and for the enrichment of Mercer Middle School.
