Assistants serve school in library, office, Counseling, Office Assistants Under the supervision of secretaries Mrs. Roberta Hei- denreich and Mrs. ,Io Hawks the office assistants were taught the various jobs which are needed to run an office efficiently. Each girl was assigned the special duties which she completed each period. After school once a month the girls came in to assist the secretaries in other oflice work. The girls who worked in the counseling center helped the counselors serve the students by making appoint- ments, typing bulletins and delivering messages. Band, chorus groups explore World of music Our Mercer Island music department flourished with three excellent singing groups under the direction of Mr. Leon Bjarnason. The Madrigals, consisting of three boys and eight girls, exhibited their talent for various service clubs and several concerts throughout the year. They also displayed their talents in the annual school play, Much Ado About Nothingf' The A Cappella Choir had the op- portunity to present several programs to the schools in the Mercer Island district. They also joined the mixed chorus in presenting traditional concerts throughout the school year. During the year. the Pep Band, instructed by Mr. Wayne Plank. led enthusiastic students at football and basketball games. They also encouraged and added spirit to all the pep assemblies. The band provided musical enter- tainment at numerous concerts this year. The orchestra, during its Hrst year at MIHS, displayed its newly formed talent at the mid-winter and spring concerts. Mary counseling center fright, Gathered around some of the A-V equip- ment were the A-V erew which consisted of ffront row, Mrs. Darlene Penhalurick, ,lan Stowell, Ben Mead. Dale Greenfield. Pat Nlalara. and Mark Witherbee. Library, Audio Visual Assistants The helpful advice and guidance of Mrs. Darlene Pen- halurick aided the library assistants in attaining a com- plete understanding of the library and its functions. In each period four students were involved with various jobs. These students learned many interesting and valuable facts about the library during their year as assistants. This was the first year the A-V crew had a room in which all the equipment could be kept in one place. Mrs. Margie Lou Green tried to maintain an accurate schedule of the films, records and slides so that they would always be available when the teachers wanted them. There were eighteen junior and senior boys trained in the operation of the equipment, which included the new 3M duplicator. The boys worked each period as they operated the A-V equipment for different classes throughout the year.
