NFL National Forensic League is an honorary club for excep- tional debaters. Entrance is determined by the number of points a student has earned in debate competition. The club also has awards of distinction for members that have succeeded in gathering a large number of points. Their highest honor. obtained by earning 250 points in debate competition enables the member to receive the Degree of Excellence award. All debate tournaments that the deba- ters enter are National League approved. The league approved ofthe debate topic of the year which was Resolved: That the foreign aid program should be limited to non-military assistance. Honor Society Sponsoring evenings of music appreciation. consisting of Bach, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky was just one of the activities of the National Honor Society. Advised by Mr. Ken Nickel and Mrs. ,lune Ebenhahn, the Mercer Island chapter of the Honor Society can boast a membership of 78. Students who have excelled in leadership. service. character and scholastic achievement are members. The requirements needed to become a member is a 3.5 grade point average from ninth grade and a recommenda- tion from the faculty. Headed by Joan Shelton. president, Mark Dion. vice president. Band, chorus groups explore World of music Our Mercer Island music department flourished with three excellent singing groups under the direction of Mr. Leon Bjarnason. The Madrigals, consisting of three boys and eight girls, exhibited their talent for various service clubs and several concerts throughout the year. They also displayed their talents in the annual school play, Much Ado About Nothingf' The A Cappella Choir had the op- portunity to present several programs to the schools in the Mercer Island district. They also joined the mixed chorus in presenting traditional concerts throughout the school year. During the year. the Pep Band, instructed by Mr. Wayne Plank. led enthusiastic students at football and basketball games. They also encouraged and added spirit to all the pep assemblies. The band provided musical enter- tainment at numerous concerts this year. The orchestra, during its Hrst year at MIHS, displayed its newly formed talent at the mid-winter and spring concerts.
