Cole, S. Sears, B. Dressell, D. Rives, R. Cohn, R. Schartz, M. Hobbs, B. Peters, Coach Mel Light. Managers: Ken Erickson, .l. Striker. Soph basketball lst, Mr. Mel Light's Mercer Island sophomore basketball team finished first place in the league. Pre-season ratings found the sophomore cagers as a mediocre team due to lack of size, but with fine coaching and a determined spirit the team took the championship. The highlight of the sea- son came with a sound win over Sammamish, this game decided the league championship. Coach Light rated his team as superior in the department of hustle and spirit. He cited some players who put forth this throughout the sea- son: Steve Sears, Beau Sadick, Mike Hobbs, Roger Schwartz, Ron Cohn, Al Cunnington and Ola England. Next year's Varsity and ,l.V. teams will have their posi- tions amply filled with many fine players of this year,s sophomore team. . Mr. Geoff Mills' junior varsity basketball team had a disappointing season. G'The team worked hard but with injuries and changing of players it affected us badlyf, said coach Mills. The team finished the l966-67 season with a 9 they beat Redmond 65-38 and Sammamish 75-58. Coach Mills cited some boys to watch for next year and who played a fine season this year. They were Gordy Mc- Millan, Dave Logan, Greg Hufford, and Jeff Apostolou. With many line sophomores returning from this year's team and coming up, coach Mills looks forward to next year as a very promising year. 129 win - 9 loss record. 'N P .aa Kathleen Hawkes, Gayle Erickson, second doubles. The Mercer Island girls, tennis team, under the coach- ing of Mrs. Lillian Ziegler, had a successful season finish- ing a strong second place in the King-Co League. The Varsity, including four returning letterwomen, Kathleen Hawkes, Gayle Erickson, Marina Kurtovich and Cammy Mowery, ended with a 7-1 record, the best in Mer- cer Islandis history. After a long hard tournament the team succumbed to Lake Washington. Lake Washington then went on to win the King-Co Championship with an 8- 0 record. One of the outstanding players on the varsity was Cyn- thia Marquette, a sophomore, and a newcomer to the team and to the school. At the close of the season she held the greatest number of personal victories, winning seven out of her eight matches. The outlook for next year is very promising. With four out of seven of the varsity members returning, Mrs. Zieg- ler has high hopes for the tennis team's future at M.I.
