Unfortunately the team didn't place very high. During the rest of the season Coach Cordon Osborn led his team on to 4 victories and 2 losses putting it in sec- ond place. On our own course MI met with the rest ofthe KingCo League for the league meet on November Sth. The 2.4 mile course seemed no problem, for the Islanders came in 2nd place overall. .Iim Logan out-jumps his Kangaroo opponent. 3rd in league standings A determined but disappointing season was the story for Mr. Corc0ran's basketball team this year. The season started out with a big win over non-league Mt. Rainier 72-46. With expectations maybe a little high, the Islanders met Glacier, also a non-league game, and were beaten 65-71. Not yet recovered from its loss the week before, the game with the Newport Knights became the first of four games lost by one point. For the next four games the Islanders proved their strength by downing Redmond, Issaquah, Sammamish, and Bothell. A strong Bellevue team gave Mercer its second one- point defeat 43-44, but the Islanders came right back to overpower the Lake Washington Kangaroos 68-59. In one of the closest games of the season the Inglemoor Vikings came from being 8 points down with one and one half minutes to go, to being one point ahead by the final buzz- er. League-leading Newport retained sole possession of first place by edging the Islanders 50-58. Undaunted. the squad, with the help of Gordy Mc- Millan, who moved up from the ,I.V. team., turned the end of the season into a winning streak. Redmond, Issaquah, Sammamish, and Bothell went down with considerable ease. In one of the most enthusiastic and spirited games of the season Mercer Island set a new school scoring record clobbering the Bellevue Wolverines 90-67. The last two games were split with the Islanders breez- ing over Lake Washington 65-54, and Inglemoor taking its second one-point victory from the Islanders 67-68. This put Mercer in third place with Inglemoor one place in front and Newport on top. Repetition proved to be the story in the KingCo Tour- nament, with the Islanders and Inglemoor battling for second place. For the third time this season the Vikings came from behind to beat the Islanders by two points, 72- 70. The end ofthe season found the Islanders in third place with 12 wins and 6 losses. With three Varsity letter- men returning, the Varsity Basketball team has high hopes of success. I'm sure we can do better in the second half. 4140?
