Carl Hansen. the toe. makes another. record for Islanders For the second time Mercer Island traveled away to Davis of Yakima for the opening game of the season. The thunder and lightening didn't dampen the spirit of the rooters, but it did seem to slow up the Islander. attack. The Pirates scoring at least once every quarter ended up win- ning 33-0. The first home game was with Highline, a non-confer- ence team. They proved to be a close match, but the Islan- ders came out on top 7-6. The team deserves a lot of credit for this game for Highline ended the season tied for first place in the Puget Sound northern division. Again on its home field MI came from behind with one minute to go to beat the Redmond Mustangs 13-7 A traditionally hard fought game with Bellevue proved to be just that this year, only favoring Bellevue. The Islan- ders fell 13-14 in one of the toughest games of the season. Homecoming and high spirits helped to cheer the team on to victory over the Inglemoor Vikings, ending an exciting week with score of 21-7. With a Homecoming victory behind us we traveled to Issaquah to fight the Indians. With hard fighting by the Indians and badbreaks for the Islanders, MI lost a close game, I9-20. With the previous weekis defeat forgotten the Mercer offense took on the Bothell Cougars ending the half with a one point lead. When the dust had settled in the rain the score was 20-6 and an Islander victory. The next two games, played on our home turf were split with Newport and Sammamish, who finally tied for second place in the KingCo league. Although Newport put down the Islanders 19-0, the MI defense held their leading ground gainer to only 50 yards. Against Sammamish the Islander showed its strength defeating the Totems, 20-I3. Lake Washington proved to by easy prey for the Mercer machine in the final game of the season. With four pass interceptions for the Islanders, the Kangaroos drowned 25-0. Achieving five victories and losing three, the Islan- ders were put in a well earned fourth place in the KingCo Conference. Besides the regular players on the team, there were a few outstanding ones who were named all-league: Brian Koch, halfback for the second yearg Mike Wiseman, tack- leg and Barry Dore, linebacker. Heads we win, tails you lose.
