NHT i WlLDLlFEE Canteens This yearis canteens created dance entertainment for after football and basketball games. Gregg Bigsby, president, with Craig Harvey, senior vice-president, Rick Hogan, junior vice- president and Kathy Klopfenstein, secretary, chose bands for the canteens. At weekly meetings the members set dance prices, discussed problems and procedures that arose. The oflicers spent time at canteens collecting money at the door, checking A.S.B. cards and helping chaperones. Adviser, Mr. Bob Freund was also always on hand for emergencies. The Hay Market Square Riot, Emergency Exits, and Kathy McDonald and the Unusuals were only a few of the bands that provided music to the cantecns this vear. Soph Hop For one night in November the mushroom was turned into the ocean floor for the annual Soph Hop which was sponsored by the sophomore class. The underwater decorations of shells, fish and seahorses added to the atmosphere and the theme of uWhat's up, down and underf' Chairman Martha Haviland was assisted by many other sophomores as they worked to make the dance a success. Music for the dance was provided by Rhett Hamilton Walker, a disc-jockey who played records and emceed the dance. Two transistor radios were given away to couples to add to the excitement of the dance. 5 This year Mercer Girls and the Boys Service Club pre- sented their annual dance entitled Blackjack to the school. The head chairmen were Ruth Berry and Jeff Cook. The dance dress was informal which helped to compliment the casual atmosphere. February l8 found the mushroom transformed into an elegant gambling casino. The walls were decked with hun- dreds of black and red balloons along with many five foot playing cards. Giant dice hung from the ceiling adding to the theme of MBlackjack.77 A table was set at one end of the dance floor and couples were provided with roulette wheels, cards, dice, chips and several cash registers for their amusement in between dances. The Viceroys provided the mood music to help keep the dice rolling and people dancing. Refreshments were avail- able on the balcony, and they included punch and a varie- Lynn Siegel, John Cahill, Todd Hagstrom and Janet Young enjoyed the chips, dice and cash register which provided a different kind of entertain- I mgnt, balcony also provided cleverly decorated tables and chairs ty of cookies shaped in hearts, diamonds and spades. The where couples could sit and talk orjust relax. Cards, chips, dice create 'Blackj ack, for Dice swung in time to the music which was provided by the Viceroys. 112
