When asked about their last year in high school, most expressed opinions similar to these: Scott Andrews said, “It was a good year. I’m happy to get on with my future.” Holly Hovis said. “It was fun while it lasted.” Let's thank God we graduated Up. Down. Up. Down . . . 23 Who invented these caps anyway? Who us; Eat school lunches? Writing another note Carol? MO w A Thorn between two roses. Where’s your hall pass John? Another Fine Season! The boy’s Cross Country Team had one of the best years ever in Mercer history. The boys ended the year with five invitational championships. These included the Pitt. Central Catholic, Neshannock, Sharon, Tri-County, and the County meet. The boys ended the dual meet season 8-0. They also went on to finish second at the district meet to North East. At the State meet the team finished third. The team is graduating four seniors. They are senior captains: Steve Forrester, Steve Hoover, Steve Podlaski, Jim Williams. Senior Steve Podlaski stated, “Overall it was a very good season. We had hoped to do better at districts and states, but an undefeated season and third in the state is nothing to complain about. The girls had a full team for the first time ever in Mercer history. They finished with a 2-3 record. They had no seniors on the team. They finished 5th in the county and 11th in the district. They had a fine first season and should look to be very competitive next year. Mercer speakers also won the National Catholic Forensic League Erie Diocesan championship for the fifth straight year, qualifying thirteen speakers ... an all-time' record ... to grand nationals in New Orleans, Louisiana. Mercer also captured its fourth straight National Forensic League Pittsburgh District championship as our speakers won first place in three of the five national qualifying events, including first and second place honors in humorous dramatic interpretation. Senior Marcia Kearns set an all-time Pittsburgh NFL record in winning original oratory for the third consecutive year. For many, it was their first chance to participate in Varsity and Junior Varsity sports. For others, it was just an exciting thought to know that they had finally reached the grades with double digits! This class was no different in trying to prove that the traditional name “Silly Sophomores” did not apply to them. Needless to say, they lived up to their reputation. The big event of the year was making the Homecoming Dance, “Under the Boardwalk”, a huge success. Other important projects for the year were putting together a leaf collection in biology, and getting to order class rings which they received in the spring. Sophomores Tabatha Hunter and Linda McCracken summed up the entire year in saying. “We enjoyed working on the Homecoming Dance and finally being considered part of the Senior High, and we are looking forward to our Junior year. They enjoyed many Jr. High dances and helping with the canned food drive. They are looking forward to attending the homecoming dance in 9th grade and they are looking forward to being out of the Jr. High wing. Lindsay Palmer, 8th grader, states: “I enjoyed 8th grade but it will be nice to be out of the Jr. High wing”. The 8th graders also helped to make the magazine sales a great success. They had to survive all day without recess and restroom breaks. They get to go to Jr. High dances and also, during school, get pushed around by the upperclassmen. As every class went through seventh grade, they had to learn their Roman Gods. Things were no different for the class of 1993, for they also had to struggle through them. The first days of a seventh-grader are filled with large halls, big people, and helpful directions on how to get to the swimming pool or the elevator. They are considered the low people on the high school totem pole. This year was the first of many high school memories to Officers: Tyson Baker • Pres. Trad Wllpula - Vlce-Pres. Beth Mathleson - Sec.
