The six years since then have been filled with both exciting and boring times. Our 7th grade year was filled with the excitement of meeting new friends and adjusting to a new environment. The highpoint of the year was selling magazines and low point was studying Greek mythology. In 8th grade we found ourselves better adjusted, and we discovered we could dish out some of the abuse we had received the year before. Enjoyments of the year included attending canteen on Friday nights and once again selling magazines. As freshmen we received more abuse than we had as 7th graders. We were however at the top of the junior high. Everyone had the joy of touring the Vo-Tech, and the agony of sitting through careers class. As sophomores we had finally reached Senior high. Most of us spent the year trying to stay awake in World History and Biology, and trying to pass Geometry. During football season we witnessed the teams entrance into the play-offs for the 1st time in school history. We sponsored the Homecoming Dance in the fall, and we received our class rings in the spring. At the end of the year we celebrated our becoming juniors with a trip to Cedar Point. Our junior year was filled with several activities. We followed the tradition of selling candy bars at the beginning of the year. In October we had the 1st annual junior class volleyball tournament. In December we were treated to the movie Airplane. We staged the play “Night of January 16th”, and we presented the 1983 Jr.-Sr. Prom “Two Tickets to Paradise. It was at the House of Troy in Sharon. In the spring we had a class picnic and softball game, and we went to Cedar Point. On the last day of school, we said so-long to our junior year and hello to being seniors with a breakfast from McDonald’s. Our senior year we did our best to be in control. We were immediately exposed to the “fun” of POD and British Literature. In February, we were involved with the All-School-Musical, “Camelot.” Senioritis hit us early, but we stuck it out and finally we were near the end. The Class of 1985 sponsored the 1984 Jr.-Sr. Prom “All Night Long which was held on the Gateway Clipper River Belle in Pittsburgh. Once we were through with finals, we began practicing for the graduation exercises. These included an assembly honoring us as seniors, baccaulaureate, and finally on June 1, 1984, commencement. We say good-bye to MHS and to each other, and we each went our own way with memories to cherish forever. 17 Court 10 12, Boys Track Statistician 10 11 Favorite song ..................... Officers were elected, and then in October they presented “Sweet Dreams , the 1983 Homecoming Dance. Finally ... the moment had arrived; yes, it was finally time to order class rings!! Spring found them worrying about the trials and tribulations of Biology, World History, and Sophomore English. It almost got them down at times, but in the end things came together and they made it through their sophomore year. The last day of school was filled with dreams of the summer and then on to the year they were looking forward to, their junior year ... candy bars ... the class play ... If looked upon as members of the junior high -they have it all - they are the oldest at canteen, they have their own basketball and football team, they are allowed to attend the Homecoming Dance, and they no longer have reading class. If they are considered members of the Senior High, however, things don’t look so bright - they must constantly put up with the put-downs from upperclassmen, they are too young to drive, and they have to go through Careers class. Although they will cherish June, their freshman year will hold memories of the class trip, reading Romeo and Juliet, the scientific egg drop experiment, the various band sponsored Junior High dances, and the fun times in geography listening to Mr. Chapin try to be funny. They were permitted to attend canteen every Friday night. There were several Jr. High dances which took place at the high school which they could attend as well. They saw their last year of reading class and selling magazines. Classes such as American history and earth science were on every class member's schedule. They can now look forward to their freshman year, a year of facing criticism from every angle. SJ Seventh Graders, Class of 1989 7 A Time For New Beginnings A As seventh graders, the class of 1989 experienced many new and different things this year. They had to learn to live through a day without recess, to read Tom Sawyer, and to memorize the names of the Greek and Roman gods. Everyone got dressed for gym, and they had a Halloween dance. This year was the first of many high school memories to come. They began their busy schedule by decorating the halls for Homecoming 1983 and by sponsoring a spirit week for the occasion. They also organized a pep assembly in honor of the court. Throughout the year, other pep assemblies were also presented. The cheerleaders continued their schedule by decorating for the Homecoming and Christmas dances. They also helped sponsor victory dances as their fund raiser. Locker signs were made for the players, and scrapbooks were given at the end of each season. The team's season-long performance was the best of any school in the Pittsburgh National Forensic League District, as it won team sweepstakes honors at six of the nine district tournaments during the season. (Mercer placed second at two other tournaments and third at the other.) Mercer won sweepstakes titles at the following tournaments: Knoch (1 21 84), Mercer B.P.W. (1 28 84). Wilkinsburg (2 18 84), Pennsylvania High School Speech League District 1 Tournament (2 25 84), National Catholic Forensic League Erie Diocesan Tournament (3 3 84), and Freshman-Sophomore Championship (4 14 84). Junior Jim Kramer turned in the top individual performance of the season as he won the National Forensic League Pittsburgh District championship in humorous dramatic interpretation. Kramer and Paul Wilson (second place winner in Boy’s Extemp) became only the second and third speakers in Mercer forensic history to qualify to the NFL National Tournament, held in San Antonio. Texas in June. Our speakers won the P.H.S.S.L. District 1 title for the tenth year in a row, and qualified nine speakers to the state tournament. Seven of these speakers placed in the top twelve of their respective categories at state. Junior David Hogue became only the second state champion in Mercer speech history as he won top honors in Boys Radio Announcing. In addition, twelve speakers qualified to compete in the national Catholic Forensic League National Tournament in Cincinnati, Ohio in May. Senior Paul Wilson and junior Mari Lee Mifsud became only the third and fourth speakers in Mercer forensic history to reach the final round at nationals. Paul placed sixth in the nation in extemp, while Mari Lee finished sixth nationally in original oratory. In addition to winning six team sweepstakes awards, Mercer speakers captured 64 individual trophies in 11 tournaments, including the state and national tournament. Twenty-one of these trophies were for first place finishes in individual events. The pace-setters were senior Janet McElrath (oral interpretation) and juniors Mari Lee Mifsud (original oratory) and Brenda Foster (informative), who each won three tournament titles. Following is a list of first place trophy winners and the tournaments in which they won top honors: Speaker Event(s) First Place Tournaments 1) Janet McElrath ........................
