Publications Class 1 2 a an9in9 From the time a student enters seventh grade at Mercer High School, until he graduates six years later, he undergoes immense emotional and physical changes. The confused newcomer progresses through his years at Mercer until he is at last a mighty Senior, fun-loving and ready to take on the world. 3 5 As seventh graders, we spent our first days going the wrong way thanks to Helpful” directions from upperclassmen. We were confined to the balcony for assemblies and always were the last ones to be dismissed. As eighth graders, we had at least one class below us. We specialized in immaturity and running through the halls. As ninth graders we were king of the junior high hill. And it didn't disturb us in the least that teachers (especially Mr. Sankey), principals, and even other students despised us. 9 KM _ CtlAMN UATIQW Tough but exciting year, from reading The Great Gatsby (or worse yet, Billy Budd), selling candy bars, planning the prom, presenting a financially successful play, enjoying a softball picnic to finally travelling to Cedar Point for the finale of the Junior Year. Setting good examples Exciting P.O.D. classes Never get caught skipping out Itching to graduate Opening night, “The Playroom” Reaching out for your diploma Starting all over again on the bottom Where are you headed in such a hurry? Can’t we slow down these last few days? I want to get out of here too. But don’t you realize we’ll never be together again? Slow down, take a minute to enjoy, Soon memories will be all that’s left of this class. by Brenda Wilcox Pulling together as a class Breaking apart as individuals Discovering who we are What we want to be Realizing the dream of finishing high school And stepping out into the world. by Colleen McKenna Time passes 90 quickly, When you’re having fun. Iwan plays the guitar. The school which Iwan attended in Indonesia goes twelve months a year, six days a week with three weeks vacation. He had to take twelve subjects a day. Classes start at 7:00 a.m. and finish at 2:00 p.m. with no study halls and no lunch. In Iwans’ school in Indonesia students are permitted to smoke and drink on school property. Iwan said, “I like it here better; it is easier.” In Indonesia the weather is like summer all year round. Iwan stated that he “liked the fall because of all its pretty colors.” The houses are built out of cement. In Iwan’s country the prices are much cheaper. For example, Lobster with mushrooms is one dollar. There is no drinking age limit nor is there a speed limit. In America Iwan lived with two different families. First, he lived with the Dr. Hoyt’s family in Grove City. Next he lived with the Mr. Robert Ringer family. In part Iwan learned of American ways through Mark Ringer, a MHS senior. r 38 Iwan was elected to the King’s Court for Homecoming. • • - cr Tutu m n Cc )arbity and junior l ariity dootbafl Bottom Row (L. to R.) The 34-member team, largest speech team in Mercer High history, won team sweepstakes honors at the following regular season and post-season trophy tournaments: Erie Prep (12 13 80), Mercer B.P.W (1 10 81), Knoch (1 17 81), Pennsylvania High School Speech League District 1 Tournament (2 28 81), Keystone Oaks Freshman-Sophomore Championship (4 4 81), and Erie Prep Seventh and Eighth Grade Tournament (4 25 81). The Mercer Speech Team was generally ranked among the top three teams in the Pittsburgh National Forensic League District during the season, and Finished as the 10th ranked team in Pennsylvania. Ten Mercer speakers qualified to complete in the Pennsylvania High School Speech League State Tournament in April, where junior Missy Stephens placed third in the state in persuasive speaking. In addition, seven speakers qualified to the National Catholic Forensic League’s Grand National Tournament in New York City in May. In addition to winning the six team trophies, Mercer speakers won 69 individual trophies during the year: 21 of these trophies were for first place finishes in individual events. Missy Stephens, using a persuasive speech dealing with student cheating on the high school and college levels, led the way with six tournament titles. Sophomore Bernice Campbell, competing in dramatic interpretation, won three tournament championships.
