Aside from our weekly football games, the band participated in several shows and competitions including a day at Cedar Point. Kiski Band Show, Edinboro State College Competition, and the Cuyhoga Falls Band Show. The band received much publicity for their unique techniques and styles including the Monster Walk and ending the show with the Dead Man’s Drill. The Marching Band, along with the Concert and Jazz Bands, took a 4 day spring trip through New York and New Jersey. 12 Officers: (left to right) Tanti Everett. Historian: Joe Sucic. In addition to their baton routines, the Majorettes perform hoop baton, flag baton, and dance routines. The Majorettes have entered various competitions and have placed first at Bald Eagle Nittany High School in 1978, and first at Ephrata High School in 1979. They went to the West Minster and Ridgewood competitions, and also performed at the Crafts Fair in Mercer. The band held an Adult Dance, which gave the players experience being under pressure. Thanks to Mr. Hogc and many others, the Jazz Band is better and better each year. The Junior High Bands included an Eighth-Ninth Grade Group and a Seventh Grade Band. Both performed for the Christmas Concert. In the Spring the Adjudication Festival is held to evaluate the bands performances. Also, a Pops Concert is held in the spring, featuring the very promising musicians of the Junior High. The Junior High Jazz Band performs for the Elementary School Concert and the Pops Concert on May 21. The Junior High Band Members practice long hours and often perform for the benefit of the community. Editor Sue Maxwell made preliminary plans to include as many of the Mercer High School students as possible. The job was not always easy; it often required Sue and the photographers to climb to the roof of the school, venture into the aromatic Home Economics department and the not so aromatic gymnasium, and even risk life itself in the Junior High area of the building. With Bobbie as manager, the advertising staff of Hi-Times sold advertisements and books, providing the necessary funds to finance the yearbook. Under Sue’s direction, the layout staff worked hard to create a book of memories that covered the major events of 1979-1980. And the entire staff together proudly present to you the 1980 Hi-Times. 26 Advertising Staff of Hi-Timcs: (1. to r.): Carol Murdoch, Bobbie Murdoch, Krystal Wygal, Middle: Jackie McGaughey, Gloria Burk. Koenig, Industrial arts teacher at Mercer High School for twenty-five years, died in Presbyterian University Hospital in Pittsburgh after an extensive illness. Mr. Koenig, a respected and admired member of the faculty, was born in Pittsburgh on June 8, 1932. He was graduated from California (PA) State College, and received a Masters degree from Kent State University. He served as timekeeper for Mercer basketball games for fifteen years. This memorial is to pay tribute to a man who faced many years of suffering with a brave face and nothing but help for others. This type of man rarely comes along, and it is the duty of those remaining to take-time to pay tribute to men with his courage. by M.J. Mercer. North Hills, and North Catholic (both from Pittsburgh) were the top three teams among the 33 active squads in the Pittsburgh District. The M H.S. Speech Team won the Pennsylvania High School Speech League District I championship for the sixth consecutive year, as eleven speakers qualified to the P.H.S.S.L. State Tournament in April. Mercer had the seventh ranked speech team among all schools in Pennsylvania In addition, ten speakers qualified to the National Catholic Forensic League Grand National Tournament in Boston, Massachusetts in late May. At the national tournament, senior Eric Peters turned in the best individual effort in the history of M.H.S. forensics as he placed fourth in the nation in extemporaneous speaking. He thus became the best M.HS. extemper of all time. Individually. Mercer speakers won 65 trophies at sixteen tournaments during the year. Included in the 64 trophies were 24 first place trophies in individual events. J. Mixer and Missy Stephens led the way as each won fivetournament titles. J.. a six-year speech veteran, won his first place trophies in humorous dramatic interpretation with the selection Good Evening” by Cook and Dudley. Missy won with a persuasive speech on unnecessary surgery entitled The Double Edged Sword. Eric Peters capped an outstanding six-year forensic career by winning three tournament titles in extemporaneous speaking, including first place honors at the prestigious North Hills Sweepstakes. Laura Jean Bish. competing in prose and poetry reading, also won first place trophies at three tournaments.
