I stood as if mesmorized, Thirty-six. Thirty-five, Thirty-four. I wanted to catch those seconds, And hold them tight to stop time; For time was passing by so fast. I looked at the girls I had played with for four years. My second family, my sisters; Lisa, Julie, Barb, Kelly, Becky, The secrets we shared the love, The companionship, the friendship, The arguments, the tears, the laughter, They all brought us closer, made us a team. If only I could stop that clock. Mixer. Sue was chosen as the most improved speaker and J. was selected as the most outstanding speaker of the year. 1978-1979 Speech In Review The 1978-79 Speech Team was, without a doubt, the best in the school’s seven-year forensic history. The team surpassed its outstanding performance of 1977-78 (five tournament titles) by winning first place sweepstakes honors at nine of the thirteen trophy tournaments in the Pittsburgh district. Thus, Mercer had the top all-around speech team in the district. Six Mercer speakers qualified to the Pennsylvania High School Speech League State Tournament in April, while eight speakers qualified to compete in the National Catholic Forensic League Grand National Tournament in Milwaukee, Wis. in May. In addition to winning the nine team trophies, Mercer speakers won 69 individual trophies during the year, easily an all-time high. During the season, Mercer speakers captured 24 first place trophies in individual events. J. Mixer, “The Drowned Man,” led the way with five tournament titles in humorous dramatic interpretation. J. also placed second at the state tournament. Mark Testa was close behind, as his persuasive speech on false advertising won top honors at four tournaments, including a first place finish at the prestigious North Hills Sweepstakes. Holly Koenig, competing in persuasive speaking and prose reading, and Sue Short, an informative speaker and poetry reader, each won first place trophies three times. Here is a listing of the nine tournaments in which the Speech Team won sweepstakes honors, and the individuals who paced the winning efforts: TOURNAMENTS 1) Kennedy Christian 2) Clarion State College 3) Mercer B.P.W. 4) Moon Twp. 5) North Catholic 6) Wilkinsburg 7) PHSSL Districts 8) NCFL Districts DATE November 11, 1978 November 18 January 13, 1979 January 20 January 27 February 10 March 10 April 1 9) Freshman-Sophomore Championship April 7 FIRST PLACES —EVENTS Mark Testa-original oratory J.
