The 1977-78 Mercer Football Team had many talented players this year. Seven team members were placed on the All-Tri County team. Paul Stiger was chosen for first team defense. Paul was also chosen for the All-State Team, honorable mention defense. Mark Nelson was chosen for first team split-end, Mark Jasowak second team defensive lineman, and Ernest Adair was second team punter. Bob Schultz was placed as honorable mention linebacker. Eric Borowicz made honorable mention defensive lineman, and Rick Whenry honorable mention linebacker. In league play Mercer lost only twice. Mercer played Greenville for the second half championship honors and won 41-29. Next came the league championship with Mercer losing to Kennedy Christian in a hard fought battle. After the league championship came the playoff games with Mercer winning four in a row. The team captured sweepstakes trophies at five of the eight district tournaments. Senior Dan Grimm, the outstanding speaker of the year, won twelve individual trophies in boy’s extemp. Senior Kevin Haley captured eight individual trophies in original oratory and dramatic interp. Mixer won six trophies in dramatic interp. Peters won five in boy’s extemp, and Testa won five in original oratory. Livermore won three in boy’s extemp. Stephens won three in original oratory. Durney and Perrine won a total of three in prose and poetry reading. Porter won two in original oratory. Baserman won a trophy in informative speaking. Koenig won a trophy in prose and poetry reading. At the Nat’l Forensic League Pittsburgh District Tournament, Mercer won three second place trophies-Haley in original oratory. Mixer in humorous interp., Grimm in boy’s extemp. The performance by this year’s speech team will be hard to surpass. The exchange program is sponsored by Rotary, who brings an exchange student each year to our area from around the world. Solveig, a senior, was a member of several organizations and participated in several activities which included the Senior Class Musical, Drama Class, German Class, Modern Dance Class, and Hoofbeats Staff. Solveig also was part of the Homecoming Activities at Mercer High School. During her stay in Mercer, Solveig lived with the following families: Hoaglands, Craigs, and Fosters.
