The team on Saturday will meet the Eastern Pennsylvania champions for the state title in their class, and we wish them well. Certainly their play in the semi finals was that of state champions. But whatever the outcome of Saturday's game, the Mustangs dominance as they humbled Bishop Boyle High School of Homstead, by the score of 86 to 71 was a demonstration of scholastic basketball at its best. The remarkable thing about the current Mustangs is that they lack the height which seems to be a prerequisite to success in today’s game. But what they may lack in this qualification, the team more than makes up in speed and agility on the court and, even more important, the uncanny ability to make scoring baskets. To single out any one member of the team would be unfair to the others, all whom possess both talent and determination. Whatever the score in tomorrow’s game, this team may take its place proudly among the others who have carried Mercer’s colors into championship competition. The “Big D,” the District 10 basketball title, today belongs to the flashy kids from the county seat, the Mercer High Mustangs. Coach Dave Cook's small, but ever-hustling Mustangs laid claim to the coveted crown by turning back a tall-and-talented Sharon Kennedy quintet, 55-40, before a standing-room-only crowd of about 4,000 here Friday evening at Westminster College. It was the third time this season the two powerhouses have locked horns and the third time those dazzling kids from Mercer have .emerged victorious. There in a strong possibility the two units may have to meet again, perhaps as soon as next Friday should they both post victories Tuesday.
