It was also a sad occasion, and this was in tribute to the 14 senior players who had finished their football careers for Mercer High. This was the Mercer High dressing room, following the Mustangs' 30-0 victory over West Middlesex High Friday. The triumph completed a perfect season for the Mustangs champions of the Tri • County League. Mercer finished with a 9-0-0 record. Senior players The senior players who ended their careers with the contest included John Miklos, Gary Yeager. Paul Rea. Joe Burk. Art Amos, Jerry Lucas. John Rea. Ed Zigo. David Saples, Bill Kcnnell, Frank Yakela, Rick Campbell. Tom Mayerchak,, Dennis Elford, Jeff McElrath I and Hclmuth Maroscher. All played an important role in the undefeated and untied record compiled by the Mustangs this year. The Mustangs played out the string with convincing superiority over the visiting Big Reds. They tallied in every quarter of the Tri • County contest, pushing over their first touchdown in the opening stanza. Gary Yeager counted three touchdowns and two conversions for a total of 22 points. Yeager's first They moved the ball 61 yards to hit the scoreboard for the first time. Yeager tallied the touchdown, his 16th of the campaign, on an 11 • yard run. Yardage was gained during the drive by Bill Stiger who raced 25 yards, and Bob Angermeier who made a first down on the Middlesex 11, to set up the Yeager run for the score. Art Amos raced over for the two -point conversion. Mercer had another opportunity, Yeager recovering a fumble on the Middlesex 21. The Big Reds stiffened and held for downs on the Big Red seven yard line. Miklos scores Mercer generated more power midway in the second quarter. Fullback Jon Miklos was the workhorse of the drive that carried from the Mercer 45 to paydirt. He carried the ball eight of the nine plays, including a three • yard buck for the TD. The march covered 55 yards. The run for conversion failed, but Mercer held a 14-0 lead at halftime. The Big Reds unleashed a march of their own in the second quarter, in an effort to make the scoreboard. The Middlesex opportunity was the result of a pass from Gary Koncar to Bill Byers. The play covered 46 yards, going from the Big Red 17 to the Mercer 37. Intercept pass The Mercer defense checked the threat and took over. Later, in the same quarter, Koncar intercepted a Mercer Ipass on the 40 - yard line I (Middlesex) and Returned it to I the Mercer 47. He fumbled when he was tackled awd Amos recovered for Mercer. Mercer moved the ball to the Middlesex 18 where Larry Habarka recovered a Mustang 'fumble to throttle the effort. Middlesex carried to the Mercer 20 when the half ended. The Mustangs hit the scoreboard again in the third quarter. Jack Bratigan recovered a Middlesex fumble on the Big Reds 48. Final scores Yeager raced it to the 32, Miklos moved it to the 26, and on a draw play, Yeager sprinted 29 yards into the end zone. Yeager added the two point conversion on a run. Seniors Debbie Drapola Michelle Ivers Tonight is the finish — the final, the end. It came and it went with its memories to lend. There were practices, “chew-outs”, rallies, and signs. The time that was spent was of yours — was of mine. Yet faced with hard work as we moved through the ranks. It was easy to seek out the unexpressed thanks. Yet no one cared, for the reward was our own. Remembering the laughter, once each stood alone. Then it was my year . . . the year as your captain. It is hard to look back and remember all that had happened. Remembering our faces with spirit in gladness. It’s hard to conceive of the moments of sadness. Being your captain, I wasn’t the best, I recall. It was hard to find some things that could please one and all. For some reason, I can remember it though. How we’d stand hand-in-hand when confronted by foe. So with sorrow — with sadness — I’ll shed a quiet tear. As we now reach the end of one fabulous year. Remembering — tomorrow’s the beginning, the dawn-of-a-new. To weave into me, the best I found, in all of you . . . — Jill Filer Jill Filer Kneeling: Debbie Roddy, Linda Miller, Linda Sunday. Are German springs as lovely as Pennsylvania's? Everything is green and new; we haven't been having too many rainy days. Oh, by the way, when do you get out of school? It seems as if school is centered around graduation for us now. We chose black and white for our class colors, we hope to build a theme around them. Sure wish you could be here. I'll bet you’ve been doing a lot of sightseeing along with your studying. Have you seen the Rhine River, what about the Bonn? Oh yea. Thanks for these pictures you sent, they are really good. I was really happy when I heard that you had some American visitors not too long ago. Was your three-week Easter-Vacation decent? Hey, I'm glad your mom sends you the HOOFBEATS, I never thought it would get out of the country. I hope you're home soon. Write soon and tell us when you're returning. Mercer hasn’t been the same. Keep smiling and remember . . . For everything you gain, you lose something, and for everything you have missed, you have gained something else.
