Text from Pages 1 - 168 of the 1970 volume:

There are places I remember all my life, m V though some have changed All these places have their moments, of people and things I still can recall. in my life I've loved them all. I know I'll never ever lose affection of people and things that went before, I know I’ll often stop and think about them, in my life I’ve loved you more 8 ACTIVI 10 TIES Pages 12-21 ii 12 14 Plans for the Mercer High Homecoming were carefully worked out many weeks in advance. Classes and organizations worked many hours in hopes of completing a float of first prize quality. The election for Homecoming Queen resulted in Billie Horchler, as queen, with Martha Thorn, and Claudia Zahuranec as attendants. The night of the Homecoming game, all of the floats followed a planned tour through Mercer and eventually arrived at the football field. At game half-time the Homecoming Queen, Billie Horchler, received her crown. At this time also, fifteen dollars was given to the Junior class for having the first place float. It was entitled. It's Child's Play. The dance featuring the Dave Killa Band climaxed the Homecoming weekend. 15 Junior Class Play Tully Bascom and his motley army invaded Mercer High Auditorium on November 7 and 8 to capture the Bomb and his audience in a delightful satire, THE MOUSE THAT ROARED. Brian Livenspire led the cast as Tully, supported by the Grand Princess of Fenwick, Peggy Kyle and her court. Health Careers Club Gives Qervice This club consists of girls, though boys are encouraged to join, who want to continue their education in the field of Health Service. HCC gives service to the community through helping at the Mercer County Home, working at the Mental Health Institute in Warren, and by taking classes and working in Sharon General Hospital. The HCC took a field trip to the Cleveland Clinic on January 23, 1970. This was an all day excursion that also stopped at the Cleveland Museum and other sites in Cleveland. , The trip was financed by the making and selling of candy apples. The candy apple project was quite successful. Looks good enough to eat! HCC had another project that was not as successful as the candy apples. This project was the making of a float for the Homecoming Parade. This project was not as successful as the candy apples, however, it also made the club a profit—they now have thousands of Kleenex flowers with which they don't know what to do. 49 A service to MHS The library is one of the places in the school that is much used by the students and teachers alike. In the MHS library, a person seeking information may receive help from Mrs. Glenn, Mr. Szilagyi, or any one of the ninety-two cadets. Twenty-one of the Library Cadets are from the junior high. Their officers are: President—Susan Bissett, Vice-President— Debbie McElrath, and Secretary—Anne Brunberg. Seventy of the Library Cadets are from the senior high. Included in this number are twenty-one Seniors, nine of whom have assisted in the library for five years and eight of whom have assisted for four years. The senior high officers are: President—Amy McClelland, Vice-President—Kathy Lee, and Secretary—Beth Kyle. 50 Library Cadets Teams receive encouragement from efforts of PEP CLUB. A mascot helps. A fan bus helps. Signs help. Pep assemblies help. 51 Varsity Football MERCER.... 6 MOHAWK .........20 MERCER.... 8 LAUREL .........38 MERCER.... 6 UNION ..........22 MERCER.... 6 NESHANNOCK ......6 MERCER. .. .14 LAKEVIEW .......20 MERCER.... 7 SHENANGO .......21 MERCER.... 6 NORTHWESTERN ...32 MERCER.... 0 WILMINGTON ..... 6 MERCER. ... 8 SLIPPERY ROCK...13 COACHES: Mr. McCullough, Mr. Bradley (Head Coach), Mr. Reimold, Mr. Urban. 1 5 seniors earn letters Jim Ferry Mike Staples Bill Priester Terry McKay Vic Staples Bench Action” 56 Bill McElrath Dave Jackal 57 Junior High Football MERCER. ... 34 LAKEVIEW ............12 MERCER.... 12 WILMINGTON .......... 7 MERCER.... 20 LAUREL ..............14 MERCER.... 36 W. Mr. Waldorf (Head Coach), and Mr. Jannone. Managers were John Cornelius. Mike Ryder. Tad Sampson, and Jim Houston. However, next year Coach Waldorf hopes to turn the youthfulness of his team into an advantage. as he will have many returning, experienced trackmen. 74 This years golf team was comprised of Seniors Don McCarl. Bill McElrath, Brian Livenspire, and Junior Bob Stranahan. Phil Williams was also a member of the team. 75 INTRAMURALS: The Intramural Football program was run by Mr. Behner this year. Claudia Zahuranec TREASURER ................ Cathy Swartz ACTIVITIES...........................Jill Romer The Class of 1970 came to seventh grade as real fashion plates—the girls with their curly hair, long skirts, and bobby socks, the boys with crewcuts and boss whites. We were the first class to have Modern Math, so when we weren't struggling with problems in Base 2, we were writing out Mr. Swogger's infamous study guides. As worldly eighth graders, we sponsored a dance— Turkey Trot —journeyed to Pittsburgh to see Mercer's basketball team win the State Championship, and to Conneaut Lake Park. Ninth grade brought Great Expectations, another State Championship, and another trip to Conneaut Lake. As silly sophomores we dissected the usual run of worms, crayfish, and frogs, learned how' to find triangles in the ceiling, and for a lack of any place better to go, we went to Conneaut again. Eleventh grade started out on a winning note Homecoming Float as our Homecoming float w'ith the theme. Hey Lancers—How About a Nice Hawaiian Punch? , captured first prize ( Rid-Rust and all). We sold that fabulous all-purpose cleaner, Rex, along w'ith T-shirts and sweatshirts as we tried to scrape up enough money for the Prom. Ours almost turned out to be the first prom w'ith two themes, but Scarborough Fair was the final choice. We worked day and night and during chemistry class to make our Prom the best ever. All classes and finals survived, we received the key and we were seniors at last. At the beginning of our senior year we envisioned ouselves in New' York for our class trip. We w’ere the first seniors to have an activities room—scene of illegal card games, soap operas and Sesame Street, and starving students w'ho sneaked bites of their lunches while the teachers weren't looking. In P.O.D. class we learned many interesting details from our Senior Scholastics; we also took a trip through English literature, stopping for six weeks to visit the Anglo-Saxons, Chaucer, and Macbeth. Many seniors sweated out college admission as we all waited for an epidemic of Senioritis. In March the seniors staged another first—MHS's first musical, Air. Crane, which was a smashing success. As the year drew to a close, our very informative and orderly class meetings increased in number and decreased in effectiveness. And our fabulous New York trip turned into a picnic at Brandy Springs Park. In this, our last year, we were determined to prove we were the best class yet as everyone had been telling us. Well, never let it be said we didn't try . . . 106 PATRICIA ABPLANALP 'Patty JOYCE ANN ADAIR 'Juice' EUGENE JAMES ADAMS 'Gene' THERESA ANN AMOS 'Terri' THOMAS ARTHUR AMOS Tom' OTTO RUSSELL ANDERSON Auto' Ot' PAULA FAYE ANDERSON 'Faye' DIANE RUTH AUBEL Diane’ PAUL BABINKA 'Paul' JULIE ANN BABNIS Jule' JEROME BAYER Jerry' LINDA JOANNE BLACK Linda Jo’ 107 RICHARD KARL BLATT Dick' GAYLE SUSAN BOGNER Gayle' NANCY JANE BOYD ’Nance’ CHARLES R. The invocation was given by Rev. Paul Douglas. Dan Moose passed the light to John Meckley. Our candles were put out. The address, entitled The Time Is Now was given by His Honorable Judge Albert E. Acker. Faith Douglas gave a beautiful solo on the flute. Honor students were introduced. The class was presented, followed by the presentation of diplomas by Mr. Matthew J. Rausch. The Alma Mater was sung for the last time. We were suddenly on the outside looking in and facing the world. But Judge Acker gave us hope. In his closing remarks he said, So I say to you that the time is now for you to step out into this world of ours and make out of it what you want it to be. In this day and age you can and will be heard. The time is now.” And our time is now!! Mass Confusion!! 134 Everyone is silent. Our last walk up. His Honor Jud e Acker. A flute solo.
