Text from Pages 1 - 168 of the 1969 volume:

Alma Mater We’ll sing our Alma Mater, We’ll Sing our praise to you. We’ll not forget your goals and aims Nor your spirit young and true. For we are loyal, we are true We’ll always show our love for you. Well lift our voices to the sky. For you dear Mercer High. o In my hands I hold the future. Like coins, bright silver, copper, I must spend the brief hours and days of time. What shall 1 buy? Will it be dreams, a moment’s laughter, or swift arrows that speed to find their mark far in the future? In Memorial Remember Me when I am gone away. Gone far away into the silent land; When you can no more hold me by the hand, Nor I half turn to go, yet turning stay. Remember me when no more day by day. You tell me of our future that you planned: Only remember me; you understand It will be late to counsel then or pray. Yet if you should forget me for a while And afterwards remember, do not grieve: For if the darkness and corruption leave A vestige of the thoughts that once 1 had. Better by far you should forget and smile Than that you should remember and be sad. —Christina Rossetti ACTIVITIES 5 HOMECOMING 68 Nineteen-hundred-sixty-eight, The twentieth day of September Commemorates a Homecoming That we shall e’re remember. At a rousing rally in the gym Excitement stirred the crowd. We paid our tribute to a mighty team By cheering long and loud. Commencing festivities early that night. Toward the field our parade progressed. Led by the band and spectacular floats. The Queen and her court looked their best. Burned deep in our field was an “N” Which was cause to seek victory over our foe. But the clash that ensued was only half o’re When the score stood at thirteen and 0. Highlighting halftime was a radiant scene, Complete with symbolic football, As team captain Lennie crowned Londa our Queen, Most radiant Queen of them all. Though we tasted defeat, we put up a good fight, Proving Mustangs aren’t easy to tame. The following evening in formal attire. The Queen and her court reigned supreme. To the tunes of “The Yellow Canary” we danced Till the end of what seemed like a beautiful dream. Touring the field to the strains of the band. The court gave the crowd quite a thrill. Attendants Debbie and Bonnie were nobley escorted By co-captains Danny and Bill. Lancers and Mustangs were tied thirteen up With seven seconds still left in the game. Senior Class Play “Rest Assured” On November 22, the Senior Class presented the hilarious three-act comedy. Rest Assured, written by Donald Payton. Under the direction of Miss Loretta McConnell, it was without doubt one of the funniest and best received productions ever staged at Mercer High School. Successful businessman, Mr. Morlock, (Fred Love), tries to prevent a marriage between his daughter, Mary, and Joe Lanconi, son of meat cutter, Luigi Lanconi, (Raymond Jewell). Luigi dies and returns to haunt Mr. Morlock, throwing the family into a dither. Then Mr. Morlock also dies and outrageously observes his family. Lucifer, realistically portrayed by Willie Shaver, comes to take Mr. Morlock to the “Lower Regions”. The maid, Mildred, (Sandy McGhee), finds Mr. Morlock merely sleeping on the sofa, and not at all dead, and peace is restored in the Morlock household. 10 “That’s the funniest thing I’ve ever heard. “His legs are not prettier than mine!1 Junior Class Play “Murder Takes the Veil” “Murder Takes the Veil” by Margaret Ann Hubbard was presented March 21, 1969 under the direction of Miss Loretta McConnell. Cathy Swartz assisted as student director. Excitement begins at a convent school where three men teachers are added to the faculty. When their baggage is unpacked, Trillium (Kathe Ragosta), a young student, recognizes an article that once belonged to her murdered father and which vanished at the time of his death. She is afraid to ask to which teacher it belongs, lest she alert the murderer. The killer (Ernie Kelly), disguised as a nun, stalks the corridors of the school seeking to find her alone. He almost succeeds in killing her; but the sheriff (Ray Shaffer) and his trustworthy sidekick (Gary Orlosky) save the frightened girl and capture the murderer. This year’s prom, featured carnival booths, caged animals, and a brick wall—all this keeping with the theme, Scarborough Fair. Hey what’s back there??? A stroll around the fair. Caged chaperones????????? 15 The “Odd” Couple. All right Cheri don’t give Mike Dave, you may kiss the bride now. such a nard time. You’ll find Seniors anywhere and everywhere. Is this the hog caller? Tired already???? Sadie Hawkins was sponsored this year by the Hi Times Staff. It was held on November 23 from 8:30— 11:30. The music was provided by the “Second Division.” Among the many games was a hog calling contest won by Fred Love. For his success in calling hogs, Fred was rewarded with a “piggy” bank. Kelly Jones and Joyce Butch reigned as king and queen. The marriage ceremonies were performed by our own “Marryin Sam” alias Mr. Scott. We are happy to announce that many girls caught a fellow that night. 16 ORGANIZATIONS 17 Kathy Bell—Editor in Chief Sandy Kloos—Assistant Editor Hi-Times Staff Keith Knowlton—Winner of the Hi-Times cover contest. This year, the Varsity Mustangs once again suffered an attack of the first-game blues as they went down to defeat at the hands of the Laurel Spartans by a score of 30-0. In the next game at Union, the Mustangs chalked up their first win, 7-6, in a game with an exciting finish. They were defeated in their Homecoming bout by a spirited Neshannock squad who racked up 20 points as opposed to our 13. The team then traveled to Lakevicw where they were trounced 20-6. Our boys quickly came back with two shutout victories over Shenango and Northwestern by scores of 27-0 and 47-0. Then the team clashed with bitter rivals Wilmington, and this year Wilmington came out on the long end of a 13-0 count. Slippery Rock outscored the Mustangs, 12-7, then our team closed out the season with a 7-0 win over Mohawk. The Varsity squad finished the year with a 4-5-0 record, and hope for a better season next year. Bottom Row: G. Smolnik, L. DeAugustino, L. Muha, V. Staples. Row 2: D. Wilson, B. Meek ley, D. Then Wilmington fell to defeat at the hands of our team, 20-0. Shenango and Mercer played to a 0-0 tie in the last game of the regular season. In the first playoff game, the Junior High team defeated Shenango bv a score of 20-0. The team started rigorous training in mid-August and their hard work payed off throughout the entire season. By the end of the season, several boys had shown that their speed and endurance qualified them for greater events. These boys traveled to Harrisburg and participated in the state-wide cross country meet. Marty Mattocks, a sophomore, running against tough competition, placed sixth in the state. This is Coach Waldrofs youngest team ever and Mercer High expects even greater results from it in 1970. Senior Lettermen Ben Bissett Joe Kish 61 Spectators (?) OR!?! Is everybody ready? The team was plagued by injuries throughout the season. By the end of the season we found that both coaches were on crutches. The team was a young one but still did a fine job and provided the fans with exciting high-school basketball. Only one member of the squad will be leaving and with the experience and knowledge gained by the remaining players—Mercer should make a fine showing next year. 63 Coach, Mr. Palmei Senior Letterman Gary Smolnik Managers Jerry Bayer, Chuck Boyer, Mike Llewllyn. 64 Mustangs On The Move . . . . 65 Mustangs Great ‘The graceful one.' 66 M. Mr. Scott coached the team composed of six juniors and one senior. However, only five members are used in a single match. The matches were held at the Mercer Public Golf Course. Our team competed in the Mercer County Class A League. A match consists of eighteen holes. It is divided into two parts. If a player wins the first nine holes he gets a point. If he wins the second nine holes he gets a point. If he wins both holes he gets another point. This makes a total of three points, the most you can earn. Jack Mortland, the only senior, advanced to districts held at Cambridge Springs. The team had a rough first year but the prospects for next year are better with six members returning. 69 Wrestling Bottom Row: C. Black, J. Weinel, T. McKay, M. Livermore, R. Brautigan, and J. Lennie De Augustine .........President ... Vice President Secretary-T reasurer “Act as though it were impossible The doors may close behind us as the echoes of our last footsteps fade away, but memories of the days the Sixty-Niners spent at MHS will forever remain a part of us. As seventh graders we were always losing things—lunch money, books, our next class, and Janet Anderson even lost her wraparound skirt in front of the office. Blue Velvet” brings to mind our first class party. And on Tag Day, where were the boys?—hiding in the lav. In eighth grade we were Deck Tennis Champs and the girls learned how to eat soup in Home Ec. By the time we reached Sr. High, we were already well-known for our Grub Days. As Sophomores we spent our time decorating lockers with toilet paper, while others rolicked in “Darrel’s Casino” and hung their homeroom teacher in effigy. That was also the year we ordered our “unclass” class rings and the girls played the women teachers in basketball with the boys and men of the faculty furnishing a “well-built” cheerleading squad. We sponsored a Mistletoe Hop, urging everyone to “bop to the flop” over the morning announcements. The next year we presented our unique Junior Class Play, I he Little Minister , and climbed the “Stairway to the Stars” at our prom. At last, we became Seniors. We had come a long way, but we were still losing things. For instance, Susie Stephan “lost” her slip coming up from lunch (with a little help from Kathy K.). As Seniors, we distinguished ourselves in many ways. Our “animal noises’ resounded throughout the halls. We held a mock election complete with campaign speeches and rally. Our Senior Class Play, Rest Assured turned out to be a smashing success. We were the class who had six English teachers in three years, broke a window in the POD room, hid a teacher’s shoes and another’s briefcase, carried pink and blue lav passes, packed eleven people in the bus restroom on the Choral tour, and tramped a sixty-nine in the snow. We were really cookin with our favorite teacher at lunch time. Late in the year our class gained a new member, but although Rosco Bookbinder s name appeared on the absentee sheet and two of his works were displayed in the art exhibit, no one ever saw him. We also suffered from an acute ailment diagnosed by Mr. Stephens as Senior complacency, defined by Webster as “self-satisfication accompanied by unawareness of actual dangers of deficiencies’ and commonly known as Senioritis. 80 JOHN HOWARD ALDERSON “Stoker” Boys’ Intramurals 4. DEAN WOODS Chorus 2,3,4. ‘Jake’ 96 Farewell At last the time has come when we must part, And leave the dear old school we love behind A special mem’ry lingers in our heart To leave the class of nineteen sixty-nine. But as we leave our dear old Mercer High The last few days for us are happy ones We know that as we say our last goodbys The knowledge we have gained will measure tons. But as we stop to think of all of this We don’t know whether to be glad or sad We know there are a few things we will miss To think of all the fun that we have had. And now we must begin again anew. With stronger aims to work, to plan, to do. Debbie Anderson Baby the rain must fall! Put your shoes on M.A.K., you’re losing friends. Graduation On June 3, 129 seniors marched down the aisle of Mercer High School for the last time. The Rev. Thomas Lynn gave the invocation. Larry Muha, president of the senior class, “passed the light” to Nancy Rausch, junior class president. Faith Donaldson rendered a vocal solo, Bach’s “Jesus, Shepherd, Lead Me”. Lynn O’Mahony presented a clarinet solo “Scherzo Fantastique” by Reed. Tom Rodgers accompanied her on the piano. The Rev. Gordon Boak, minister of East Main United Presbyterian, gave the address entitled “The Most Unwanted Man”. In his address Dr. Boak issued a stirring call for “tall men, sun-crowned, who live above the fog in public duty and in private thinking”. He closed with these words of the Josiah Holand poem: For while the rabble with their thumb-worn creeds, Their large professions and their little deeds. Mingle in selfish strife, Lo!
