1967 HI-TIMES MERCER AREA JUNIOR-SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL Mercer, Pennsylvania With stress on the future Man runs . . . With worries and cares He stumbles to his goal; Faltering, scared, alone and cold, Man . . . A senior, a junior, a sophomore. Shudders . . . Silently searching for help and Comfort ... in memories . . . in yesterday. TABLE OF CONTENTS Dedication 4 Administration 5 Seniors 15 Underclassmen 33 Features 57 Homecoming 58 Junior Class Play 60 Senior Class Play 62 Prom 64 Student Government Day 66 Organizations 69 Athletics 97 Cheerleaders 98 Football 100 Cross Country 107 Basketball 109 Track 115 Wrestling 118 Awards—Graduation 121 Advertising 129 Index 141 Because without it Mercer High School could not exist WE DEDICATE The 1967 Hi Times to Mercer, “Our Town.” Under the large white dome the hands on the clock move. Seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks and months fade into eternity. The seasons come and go. From the windows of the Mercer Area High School generations of students have looked out and up to the dome above the public square. East, west, north, or south, the appearance of the dome from the rolling hills and beautiful valleys surrounding the site of “Our Town” has brought recognition that one is nearing home. Here a hardy, self-reliant people, strong in their abiding religious faith and patriotism made the first step toward the establishment of a thriving community. Sparked by the sunshine of the day or the lights of the night, the dome shines out on our homes in comfortable residential areas, our churches, schools, recreational facilities, social organizations and industries. Many landmarks have disappeared to make way for the new. The youth of Mercer may well be proud of the cultural achievement on the fine educational plant, the excellent teaching staff, and the high standards provided for them by the community leaders. To “Our Town” we respectfully dedicate this issue of the Hi Times with our sincere appreciation of the public spirited citizens who are largely responsible for the Mercer of today. What man puts into life determines the fruits he shall gather. 4 ROW : Edwin Thom. Orin Porsch. Paul Gill. Rolland Blatt. ROW 2: Glenn Kloos, Clarence Lee. It gave me a joy beyond compare One autumn evening, so very rare. The sun was gleaming on golden trees— The sight would make the calmest heart freeze. For there, beneath the blue, blue sky, Was a sight to make everyone want to cry. Queen Diana rode in state, you see, For all the townspeople like you and me. And then that wonderful, wonderful game— Never will another be quite the same. The first half passed with many a qualm. But the score at the half was a soothing balm. And then Diana was crowned at last. Best Homecoming Queen in all the years past. That football she gave to our wondrous squad, Without a doubt seemed to do the job. And at the end of the game, once more Our Mustangs had the winning score. And Queen Diana reigned supreme Beyond the most fantastic dream. There will be a Homecoming every fall, But this years’ certainly outshone them all. —Nancy Thompson 58 Queen Diana escorted by co-captain Dick Harris. SENIOR CLASS PLAY The Senior Class Play was a murder mystery entitled, “Nine Girls,” by Wilfred H. Petitt. The plot, which develops in the living room of a sorority club house in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains, was a jealous murder, followed up by a second murder to cover up, and an attempted third murder. Mary, (Nancy Baron), is a girl from the other side of the tracks in a rich sorority who has loved and lost. She is driven to murder by jealousy, hate, and fear. Margaret Forrester, as Eve, portrays the level headed rich girl who finally discovers the murderess and reveals her, at the risk of her own life. The play was excellently directed by Mr. 62 Darrell Matheus. Those Mercer players come in all sizes! Help! My leg . . . it’s going into the ground! “All right you guys, let’s get up and play some football now. This year Mercer's football team finished the season with a fine 7 and 2 record, one of the best records in the history of football at Mercer. The season started out in defeat as Neshannock won over Mercer. However, the team snapped back to a six game winning streak over Lakeview. Shenango, Northwestern. New Wilmington, Slippery Rock, and Mohawk. Then, again, the Mustangs tasted defeat at the hands of Laurel. They then bounced back with a tremendous team effort to beat Union and finish the season as co-champions of the Tri-country class B league.
