Time I sit here and watch time pass by, Leaving happiness and sadness Woven into beautiful memories, And leaving the changes in everybody's age and personality That will never stay the same. As I think about the past, present, and future. And realize how they never were, aren't, and never will be the same, It depresses me, because I long for the security of not having to face losing a friend or gaining an enemy. But as long as time continues to move on, I will cherish the memories I have from the past, Wait with anxious anticipation for the future, And cope — with the present. HAPPINESS. . . TOGETHERNESS. . . ACCOMPLISHMENT. AND LEARNING. All of These Are “Times We Cherish. ” TIMES OF HAPPINESS. . . ABOVE LEFT: Tony Huffman finds enter- tainment in the antics of Perry Harp. ABOVE RIGHT: Beta Club members enjoy frustration of new members at initiation. RIGHT: Vickie Robinson and David Huff- man find the times between classes to be a pleasant pan of the day. 6 Moments of happiness can be expressed many ways: Friends sharing a bus ride; working together on an assign- ment in the library; taking a moment from class to have a picture taken. However all of these pictures have one common factor. They are produced by the presence of others. True, the presence of others does not always mean happiness, but in the student environment of Mercer High, it is a natural product. HAPPINESS comes of the capacity to feel deeply, to enjoy simply, to think freely, to risk life, to be needed.” Wilfred T. Grefell ABOVE: Enthusiastic Beta Club members relax on their way to state conven- tion. MIDDLE LEFT: Lisa Watts, Jackie Devine, and Barbara Thornton find amusement in library study. MIDDLE RIGHT: Janice Pulliam is happily sur- prised by the camera. LEFT: A definition of happiness adorns bulletin board. 7 TIMES OF TOGETHERNESS. . . Moments of togetherness in students’ lives may range from watching a basketball game with a crowd, to sharing memories from an annual with friends, to capturing a moment of tenderness between a couple. All of these moments are times we have experienced at least once. At the moment each experience occurred, it may have been taken for granted. As we look back on these moments we cherish them, for they are imponant periods of growth and adjustment. RIGHT: Parents and faculty participate in student activi- ties. BELOW LEFT: Interested seniors remember past memories with an annual. BELOW RIGHT: Tim Lewis and Pat Clark engage in one of their many conversations. 8 ABOVE: Kevin Claunch admires Donna Hudson's outfit? MIDDLE LEFT: Sports bring people together. MIDDLE RIGHT: Sherry Good- paster consoles Danny Brock after a hard day. BELOW LEFT: Danny Acevedo and Anita Carey succeed in breaking the international barrier. BELOW RIGHT: Eddie Hudson and Patty Mink appear to be concentrating on a book, but . . . TIMES OF ACCOMPLISHMENT. . . When you have done what you set out to do and have never said 'I quit,' you finish with a smile on your face. That is an ACCOMPLISHMENT.” FRANK PRESTON This poem, by Mac Mayes, was published in a national Scholas- tic magazine. This is one more of the many accomplishments Mercer students have obtained. THE SUMMER In the summer, in the evenings When the day's been warm, Then we walk without our shoes on In the long grass on the farm. The fireflies in the bushes Prick the darkness all around, And the crickets, very busy, Make their night-time summer sound. The grass is cold and dewy After all the long day's heat, But the stepping stones set in it Still are warm beneath our feet. 10 MAC MAYES ABOVE: Frieda Graham is the recipient of a state-wide 4-H award. MIDDLE: Mercer girls receive the district basketball trophy. BELOW: Mrs. Jones presents Larry Meaux with a check for his essay which was published in The Beta Journal. Throughout the year many goals that had been set were captured. Some of these events were of a serious nature and others not quite so serious. The events ranged from Robin Jackson's award winning essay on conservation to Charlotte Baker’s quest for the great SUPER BUBBLE. But whatever the event, it still stands as a goal that was strived for and reached. LEFT: Charlotte Baker in her quest for the great super bubble. BELOW LEFT: Lana Brown and John Elliott accept the Optimist Award. BELOW RIGHT: Robin Jackson receives check from Marvin Burton for her essay on conservation. 11 TIMES OF LEARNING Learning is a process of gaining knowledge which may take various forms: group sessions, special teacher instruction, or a student's individual search for an answer. All of these forms are evident in the atmosphere at Mercer. However books and tests, as many students have discovered, are not the only tools of learning, but rather the experiences gained from day to day provide the student with a realization of what true knowledge is. RIGHT: Biology students face test of knowledge. BELOW: Mrs. Bundy gives special instruction to student during her free hour. BELOW RIGHT: Jenny Lester prepares for speech tournament. 12 ABOVE: Library students gain experience by working during study hall. LEFT: Kathy Lester utilizes her spare time by reading. BELOW LEFT: Joe Alford studies rat’s anatomy first hand. BELOW: Students master accounting skills. 13 14 15 These Times We Cherish Senior Officers Lead the Class of '75 Vicki James - President Perry Harp - V. The crazy things my friends have said, The many teachers that have led Us through many books, papers, and themes. And how they listened to our many dreams. Football, basketball, and all the games That led us to victory, and brought us fame. The limes we came to classes late When we were worried about a Saturday night date. The noise and chatter that filled the hall, The spirit posters on the wall. Now, I am going to graduate And to look back now, is a little too late. - Ann Pickett 32 f (RoM !k ( CkX - Q)llLQjvUL 0 qZtO VYb ) C cdLr _ 3 uz CtZcy oft CXjKsrXsOJ ( oyu cSl 34 f do- (facrndwn C_JJVV_cL 35 36 KoLtW fi JULAA. 38 0 4! 42 5 55 i SS umt •) s . i w ', a HlUUIo Clin Jit %• V. • a A ' ssl OJbtxxXY y lx d jix 43 4 Xorwv m Q Cfuu bvj 44 45 ( £aajy q QJLuj-la.; (Lur FuLAAAsyO Qj v n V jdktddc 48 cdSK - % (P 49 m t u a ( | 2 W pZl mWA iitHtfnk ♦ {tHmHj r“ !:- «« ' 11 “ i H ‘ til$W r I lnWM M 51 f-3— c AoMr, £ • S tt X Xj OOvO- Jo luz duu ' J)CM ry cx_ V ott y 53 [ 55 Exchange Students Arrive at Mercer This year we were again fortunate to have several exchange students with us. A(ar,c.M G-UfdfS Outstanding Seniors Receive Recognition VALEDICTORIAN: Frieda Graham SALUTATORIAN: Vickie McCrystal S.T.A.R. TEACHER: Mrs. Gritton S.T.A.R. STUDENT: Glenn Newland There are two awards that require more than just moments of knowledge. These awards are gained by four years of hard work and determination, through which the students involved must often forego social pleasures for the call of the textbook. We are proud to recognize this dedication by announcing Frieda Graham, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Graham, valedictorian and Vickie McCrystal, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles McCrystal as salutatorian. Another coveted honor is the Student Teacher Achievement Recognition Award, which was presented to Glenn Allan Newland, son of Rev. and Mrs. Guy Newland. Glenn received this award by having the highest scores on the S. A. T. college test. Mrs. Mary Dot Gritton was chosen by Glenn as the S.T.A.R. teacher who has con- tributed the most to his academic growth. 57 • 1 ?✓ BAKER, CHARLOTTE JEAN Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Baker, Jr. Beta Club 2, 3, 4: Pep Club 1, 2, 3, 4; Speech and Drama Club 3, 4, Social Chairman 3, 4; French Club 1, 2, 3, 4, Vice-President 3, President 4; Science Club 2: Ecology Club 3; Medical Careers Club 4, President 4; Cheerleader 1, 2, 3: Junior Achievement 3, Secretary 3: Ring Committee 3; Baccalaureate Usher 3; Powder Puff F Dtball 3, 4, Captain 3, 4; Spring Play 3, 4; Annual Staff Photogra- pher; Who’s Who 3, 4: National Award of Excellence 3, 4; Society of Distinguished American High School Students; Most School Spirit 4; Miss Pep Contest 4; FFA Queen 3; First Place Duet Acting, Paris Speech Tournament; Second Place Duet Acting, Mercer and Asbury Speech Tour- nament; Typing I Award; Outstanding Speech and Drama Student, 3. Many people were doubtful of this prophecy. But when the last point was scored and the 1974-75 football season was over, his words were proven true. The highlight of the season came in the last game. A thrilling last minute catch of a long pass from Eddie Hudson to Tommy Sallee boosted Mercer to a 6-4 record. This broke the old record of 5-5. Even though many play- ers stood out, a team spirit always prevailed among them. The Scotties lost seven valuable seniors: Gary Caton, Eddie Hudson, John Howard, Jackie Major, Craig Morris, Kevin Perkins, and Tommy Sallee. However, we, the Highlan- der Staff can boast a year together and no example of this problem. Although there were countless errors and many stumbling blocks, we felt that the only way to solve each problem was one at a time, and we believe this attitude helped in the success of completing the 1975 Highlander. We would like to extend thanks to Mr. John Hockersmith, Mrs. Mary Noel, the student body and faculty of Mercer High for their cooperation. JOHN ELLIOTT Editor LARRY MEAUX Co-Editor 223 IN MEMORIAM Lloyd Rondo 11 Cheothom Lloyd Cheatham was a fellow classmate who died suddenly three years ago. He was a sensitive individual with his own thoughts and feelings. Below is one of the impressions he felt. Love is the strength, hate is the weak. The weak was made for the strong to play upon. By the end there is no more, nei- ther strong nor weak - both are equal. Autographs ' ■ ‘ .. • . .■V •• • ■ . ‘A ' . « . a V ‘ • . 1 • «. ;-v%. ■ ■ -— A ;j .. o. V - •________ «• ' ■ V
