Under the excellent direction of Mrs. William Gravely, the class learned the many pains, tensions, and hours of long hard work that go into a produc- tion. The class also experienced the fun, excitement, and glory that accom- pany success. The acting was superb, and the entire cast and Mrs. Gravely were to be commended. Several students entered local speech contests and received honors. Other students presented monologues to the Beta Club and at local civic din- ners. Bob Shy of KETV was a special guest and his visit was enjoyed im- mensely. All in all the Speech and Drama Club had a very successful year. 121 Night of January 16 Nora Riley, Billy Robinson, Denna Jackson, Timmy Lewis, Cathy Cinnamon, Kevin Hatfield, Teresa Roberts, Kevin Perkins, Cindy Caton, Gary Caton, Laurie Sharpe, Steve Sims, Tereseta Cunningham, Larry Baxter, Carolyn Mobley, John David Lane, Ruby Keller, Terry Hart, Becky Sanders, Harrison Spaulding, Florence Huffman, Ricky Catlett, Janet Robinson, Jimmy Daughtery, Carolyn McDonald, Danny Holliday, Patty Green, Don Huffman. Reign As King and Queen The Fall Festival, a PTA sponsored activity, drew a large crowd this year. A King and a Queen were elected to reign during the Festivities. There were many activities including a country store and a cake sale for the parents, while students enjoyed the fish pond, basketball throw, and throwing darts at teachers’ pic- tures. Mrs.!. C. James, III President Mrs. Marion Inman Treasurer Mr. Kenneth Parker Vice President PTA Enjoys Successful Year Besides having the annual Fall Festival, the P.T.A. spon- sored a New Year’s Dance and purchased an electric podium for the school. They also contributed to the HIGHLANDER, clothing bank, and the cafeteria. To show their appreciation for the teachers, they held a breakfast for them at Stone Man- or. Mrs. Charles Lewis Secretary Mrs. James Sexton Reporter 127 Throughout the past four years, the seniors have raised money for various activities. Having enough money left in their treasury, the seniors decided on a class trip to Lake Cumberland State Park near James- town, Kentucky. Twenty-five seniors, along with five chaperones, left by bus on a two-hour drive to the scenic Lure Lodge, on the banks of Cumberland Lake. Upon arriving at the lodge, the seniors checked in- to their rooms and began making preparations for their two-night stay. Everyone engaged in the various recreational activities the park offered, which included swimming, tennis, hiking, and horseback riding. Of course, the most popular facility was the lodge pool. On June 2, the seniors arrived home from their trip tired and sunburned, and just in time to practice for their graduation exercises. 132 Exciting Trip to Lake Cumberland v J' i i' Bridge Over The theme, “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” introduced a lavishly decorated gymnasium for the Junior-Senior Prom. Music for the event was provided by “Crushed Velvet,” who quickened the pace early in the evening and created a memorable night for those attending. %®r. Football 1,2; Basketball 1,2,3; Golf 3; FFA 1,2,3. School is out. The students and teachers are gone. The halls that were teeming with the noise of slamming lockers, running feet and shouting voices, are quiet. Nothing is left except the memories of our years at Mercer. A few members of the annual staff remain to complete the last layout mats. The hour is ap- proaching when we will walk down the halls for the last time to enter a new world. This world awaits. We cannot linger in the halls forever. We must go. ♦- Ads Make 1971 Yearbook a Reality The 1971 Annual Staff would like to extend their thanks to everyone who advertised in our yearbook this year. Without their generous support, it would have been impos- sible for us to have an annual. We hope that Mercer students, parents, and friends will continue to patronize the merchants and businesses that are listed in the following pages. Again—Thanks to everyone. ♦ ♦ Armstrong Studio 146 Kentucky Artificial Breeding Association Lawrenceburg Marine EH Boats, Motors and Service 251 East Court Street Lawrenceburg, Kentucky Telephone 839-3401 Kenneth Cinnamon—Technician 865-2297 A.B. “Beck” LaFoe Cull Lumber Co.
