It has been a great asset to our school. The foyer in the junior high wing has served as our study hall. It has also served as a new entrance into the gymnasium and has provid- ed a concession stand which has been a great help at ball- games. Included in the new building are not only classrooms for the junior high but also a band room, and a chorus room used by the high school students. The new school not only adds a lot to the high school, but it is also a great aid to the better education of the junior high student. In October the band participated in the Dan- ville Invitational Marching Contest and the Franklin-Simp- son Marching Contest. In both contests the band received participation trophies, and since this was the first year that our band entered any marching contest, we were very pleased. In April the band traveled to Atlanta, Georgia, where it competed in a concert contest. While there they visited the Six Flags Over Georgia Park, which is an amusement park much like Disneyland. After a very enjoyable trip, the band returned home on May 2. The highlight of the year came when the band for the second straight year rated superior in the annual state con- cert contest at the University of Kentucky. On May 24 the band held its annual spring concert, which concluded a very enjoyable year. Gifts were given to each teacher and cafeteria worker and refreshments were served. 102 Through Successful Year Student Council The Student Council is a service club that represents the student body. Since the addition of the Junior-High this year, representatives from the 7th and 8th grades were elected. Among the projects of the Student Council were the pre- sentation of a variety show and the purchase of an Ameri- can flag. Six permanent members were also guides at the regional spring meeting of the PTA. Beta Club The National Beta Club is an organization of high school students of good character, creditable achievement, and commendable attitudes. They purchased a beautiful planter for our foyer. They sold magazines to pay for such projects as Teachers’ Appreciation Week and a banquet for the se- niors and the faculty. Beta members went to Louisville to attend the State Beta Convention. The old members welcomed twenty-six new members this year, who were initiated on April 2. The Sophomore members served at the Junior-Senior Prom. Ju- niors were ushers at the Baccalaureate and Commencement The Beta Club enjoyed a successful year. Ready to go to Convention. Teachers’ Appreciation Week. Preparing for magazine sales. Spanish members are required to wear Spanish clothing on Initiation Day. The Latin members have an Initiation Day also. In their initiation they wear togas. The sponsor, Mrs. Elizabeth Whitehead, who retired this year, will be greatly missed by all the members of the Foreign Language Club. Library Club The Library Club encouraged wise use of the library. The motto was “Reading is for Everyone.” During the Christmas holiday, they visited a rest home and took boxes of fruit. The Book-a-Week Club was sponsored by the Li- brary Club. Members were the students who had read a book a week during the six-week period. The theme for the National Library Week was “Stop, Look, Listen and Read.” During this week they had a tea for the members and the faculty, different types of contests were held, and roving book reviewers gave book reviews. The library purchased many new books, which mean very much to the students of Mercer High. This year the Pep Club was also a sponsor to help raise money for the Athletic Ban- quet. The dance was a great success. Garden scenes by candlelight, cherry trees in pink blossoms, and the groovy music of the Van Dels set a swinging mood. Each year a new staff is faced with the same problems of those of the years before. HOW TO TELL IT LIKE IT IS. Taking Pictures- Cropping Pictures—Enlarging Pictures—and Reducing Pic- tures. Writing-Rewriting-Editing—Financing—Planning- Revising. “Who has the camera?” “Who has a ruler?” “Who has a proportion dial?” “Who has an aspirin?” This was the year man first walked on the moon. This was the year Paul Wayne Peavler won the “Prettiest Leg Contest.” This was the year colleges were marked by Student Protests. A build- ing was burned at U.K., and B.R. Chilton slept through se- nior English. This was the year the Annual Staffs nightmare came true. A misplaced club picture turned up long after the club section had gone in. This 7th Grade 4-H picture should have gone on page 112, and the picture identified as Jr. High 4-H was really 8th grade 4-H. Sorry about that, 7th graders. 7th GRADE 4-H CLUB Ads Help Finance Our Yearbook The 1970 annual staff wishes to thank all the advertisers who purchased ads in our yearbook. Their support, co-operation, and generosity help to publish this book of last- ing memories of high school. We hope that Mercer students, friends, and parents will continue to patronize the mer- chants who help to make possible the pro- duction of the Highlander each year. Mr. Carl Lay, who leads the Chamber of Commerce this year, looks over some of the ads with Yvonnia Price who is in charge of the ad section. We deeply appreciate all the co-operation the Chamber of Commerce has given us in helping to finance our yearbook as well as their help in all other school activ- ities.
