Whether it be the stirring beat of the Mercer High Marching Band, the throb of drums, or the swinging strains at one of our dances. Our Library Club delighted in presenting songs to rest home patients at Christmas. During this season our students enjoyed the songs of the Singing Christmas Tree, composed of high school girls from the Harrodsburg Baptist Church. 4 School Days Are Happy Days School day memories ... studying... learning ... play- ing... parades . .. career day ... teas... dances... assem- blies. .. class field trips ... school day romance ... all make us a busy happy year. HAPPINESS IS True happiness Consists not in the multitude of friends, But in the worth and choice. Ben Jonson Corne slle HAVING FRIENDS 9 HAPPINESS IS 10 BEING A SENIOR 1) HAPPINESS IS ... a book to carry one to adventure and romance in far away places, and through the barriers of time to ages, past and future. It is riches of the mind only that make a man rich and happy. . . the fun at a fall convention HAPPINESS IS Youth, with its problems, ambitions and an- ticipations, is a slow but steady development of the individual, nurtured by the enveloping pow- er of learning. Education is the catylist which creates the adult and implants within him the unsatisfied hunger for more knowledge—the goal of a complete and dynamic being. A student’s life means greuling and never-end- ing study . . . late nights . . . early morning ris- ings . . . and chilly rides to school. 14 GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT Classes and current events stimulate the inquisitive students, prod him into an awareness of the importance of his learning in an increasingly complex world. And, just around the corner, there’s always an invitation to the fu- ture. HAPPINESS IS FOUND IN SPORTS Changing colors of autumn leaves and crisp cool days herald the football season. Then as the cold sleets and snows of win- ter approach, spirits are warmed by the competition found in basketball games and tournament play. At last the chirping of the earliest robin is heard, and sports- minded fans next plan for baseball and track. So the seasons pass, one following another, and'each contributes to the fun, excitement, and spirit of the school year. HAPPINESS IS Having a Senior Trip Although the Senior Class did not take a long trip, everyone enjoyed the three days spent in Cincinnati, April 18, 19, and 20. While there, the seniors saw the Taft Museum, “The Graduate,” The Cincinnati Zoo, the Shrine Circus, and the Cincinnati Reds ball game at Crosley Field. Memories also of laughter and pizza shared, of the Friday night dance, of the shopping excursions, and of various leisure time activities will never be forgotten. Due to inadequate facilities in the county grade schools, classes for some eighth graders were held at Mercer again this year. Mercer is a center of activity all year round. Every spring the Mercer County Elementary School spell- ing bee is held here in the high school building, and during the summer, Head Start Classes and summer school classes are held for both grade and high school students. Excavating work is now being done in preparation for the new Junior High School and the new Elementary School. Everyone in Mercer County is anticipating the day when these new schools will be completed. “The Beta Club’s for Leadership, The Beta Club is composed of students who have achieved a scholastic average of 90 or above. Some of the members of the club went to Beta Conven- tion in December. Here they learned about the purpose of a Beta Club and how to make their club more successful. This year the club sold magazines in order to finance their activities. They also observed Teacher Appreciation Week. Each teacher received small gifts each day as a token of appreciation. Twenty new sophomore members were initiated into the club. All the members enjoyed the trials these new betas had to endure. They received their certificates and pens at the Beta Assembly. A banquet was held in the spring in honor of the senior betas. Each senior had the privilege of looking at his future in a crystal ball. for Loyalty, and Truth.” OFFICERS President Sharon Brock Vice-Pres. Each month the Student Council sponsored an assembly program with various speak- ers and singing groups. In October, Cathy Phillips, Jan Britton, Yvonne Ashford, Gwen Mayes, Ella Chilton, and Mrs. Jane Metheny attended the state convention at Russellville, Kentucky. The members of the student governing body sponsored several dances this year, among them was the Christmas Dance, which was the highlight of the Christmas season. Miss Verna Farney, a senior, reigned as “Miss Mistletoe,” the Christmas Dance Queen. The Student Council had several projects for the 1967- 68 school year. Covering the bulletin board each week to inform the students of current happenings was of interest to all. To promote school spirit and to make money for other club functions, the members sold navy blue Mercer High sweatshirts. Members aided fellow stu- dents in the use of the library. The Library Club included many activities in their yearly program, among them was the participation in National Library Week in April, during which special emphasis was placed on reading. Book reviews were given in different classes by roving book reviewers. Awards were given the last day of Library Week for the best book illustration, poem or song, and book review, and the largest number of books read. Certificates were given to library assistants on that day. The Library Club sponsored the Book-A-Week Club for those students who read at least one book a week, and “Visit Mercer High,” a column in the local newspaper. Library assistants brought joy to the hearts of the senior cit- izens at Christmas time. Guests enjoyed refreshments at the annual Library tea. The trip was made with the intention of achieving the following: First, to visit Morehead State University, where a concert was presented; second, to pre- sent concerts in other schools; third, to enjoy the facilities of Carter Cave State Park. During the quiet hours of the early afternoon, the chorus can be heard. Blended voices harmonize distantly through- out the halls of Mercer County High School. Some seniors decided to forego their last year of eligibility, and then injuries added to the toll. Junior, John Inman, was off the team for over two months when he suffered a broken collarbone in a pre-sea- son scrimmage with Greensburg. Later senior, Wayne Sex- ton, suffered the same injury. Thus the season became a long one until these two regrouped the Scottie secondary in the last two games. The Scotties lost to Anderson County, a Recreational Bowl and CKC Play-off team who had won eight games, 16-0. Scott County posted its seventh in the Scottie final, 13-0. These two efforts by the Scotties showed much im- provement in their play. Fans claim that the Anderson County game was one of the best ever played by a Scottie team. Wayne Sexton, a fine football player with very good po- tential, was one of the team’s most valuable assets. He had excellent speed and excelled as a linebacker on defense and quarterback on offense. Wayne is a letterman of four years in football. Mike McKinney tried hard and did a fine job at end on offense and defense, but because of his weight disadvantage, Mike took some hard beatings against other boys much larger than himself. Despite this Mike had good hands and a great competitive spirit. He was a letterman of three years in football. John Gary Curtsinger was very small, but did a good job at both guard and tackle. He was one of our messenger guards, alternating with other guards in bringing in plays from the coach. John was a letterman in his senior year. Dennis Tyler, an excellent football player on both de- fense and offense, loved contact and hit very hard. He play- ed both offensive and defensive tackle and had good size (about 180 lbs.). His competitive spirit and desire to win was one of the best. He was one of the team’s best blockers on offense and he had excellent pursuit. He lettered four years in football. Dennis Wade played at halfback and fullback on offense and at cornerback on defense. He had good size, and he ran the ball well at his backfield positions. Dennis did a credit- able job at defensive cornerback. He was the team’s defen- sive captain. Dennis did a good job for the team with very little experience. He was a two year letterman. Ronnie McGinnis was an important player on both de- fense and offense. He played hard at his position of center. He was one of the Scotties’ best offensive linemen. Ronnie has lettered three years. Lloyd Pickett, a very good lineman, played guard and de- fensive end. Lloyd had a great competitive spirit to win. He is a four year letterman. William Rogers, an excellent tackle and guard, helped the Scotties with his hard blocking and tackling. William is a 195 lbs. senior who lettered two years. Leading the Scotties lineup were five Seniors. Jerry Tyler, a 5’10” guard, led the team in 15.4 average points per game, assists, and free throw percent. Jerry has been a starter for 3 years and was considered to be a tough competitor and fine playmaker. Ellison Meaux, 5’10” guard and forward, was our second leading scorer averaging 13.4 points per game. Ilis outstand- ing game was with St. Charles when he scored 25 points. Ronnie McGinnis, 6’ forward, averaged 9 points per game, and was one of the leading rebounders. Ronnie has lettered 2 years. Ronnie scored 16 points for his best game against Burgin. Jerry Tyler received honorable mention at the District Tournament. David Cannada, 6’1” center, led the team in rebounding, averaged 9.1 points per game, and field goal per cent with 51%. David, with his jumping ability and defensive moves, was an asset to the team. His best action was seen in the game against Western when he scored 22 points. Marty Montgomery, 5 7” guard, was usually considered our 6th man and started some games. Marty averaged 3.5 points per game. Marty lettered for 2 years. Among these 6 Seniors, David Wade, a Junior, and Gary Baxter, a Sophomore, were seen in the starting lineup. Both contributed considerably to the success of our team. We are looking forward to returning lettermen for a success- ful season next year. Terry is also a one-year letterman and played first base when he wasn’t on the mound. The Scotties had a fair season. Their greatest feat was a vic- tory over Lexington Sayre. In this game they held out a 9-5 victory. Joe Hawkins was winning pitcher. This game show- ed what the Scotties were able to do with every player get- ting their share of the hits. This game brought the spark back into the team. The Scot- ties were defeated in the district tournament 4-2 in a class game. They were tough on defense but lacked in hitting power. John Inman, a junior, led the team with a .550 bat- ting average. Ronnie McGinnis proved to be the outstanding senior for the Scotties this year. Ronnie posted a .416 batting average and proved to be a great asset to the team in the field. Ron- nie is a four-year letterman. Tommy Major, another four-year letterman, played out- field, infield, and catcher for the Scotties. Tommy had a good year batting .302, and made a fine show in the field. Joe Hawkins was a pitcher for the team this year. Having a record of three wins and four losses, Joe posted a .262 aver- age. This 262 mark was well off the .462 mark he posted as a junior. Joe is a three-year letterman. Marty Montgomery, a one-year letterman, was light in ex- perience, but improved greatly as the season progressed.
