EDUCATION IS MY NAME Dorothy E. Snow Taken from DELTA KAPPA GAMMA BULLETIN I am the Builder: Education is my name. I am the builder of all things--great and small: I am the builder of the universe from the beginnings of time. I am the Builder: I have taught men how to live .upon the earth in peace and brotherhood: I have taught men how to live--and how to die; I have taught them how to love a great cause, and I have taught them how to serve it, even unto death. I have taught men how to build. . . Upon the errors of yesterday, Upon the realities of today, Upon the hopes of tomorrow. When their handiwork has failed and their structures have collapsed about their heads, I have taught them to rise once more from the shambles, take up their tools and begin again; When their efforts have been rewarded with the admiration of their fellows, I have given them the grace and humility of beloved champions. I am the Builder: I am the builder of homes and schools and churches, of factories, bridges, and broad turnpikes. . . I am’the builder of minds, of hearts, of ideals. . . I am the builder of books, and paintings, of towering cathedrals, of tiny country churches. . . I am the builder of friendship, of self-sacrifice, of honor, generosity, patriotism, of all things noble. I am the Builder: I am the builder of people--I am the chief nourisher of youth and the sustenance of age; I am the nursemaid of the child; I am the companion of the invalids; I bring comfort into the land of the blind, and into the four walls of a prison cell. I am the Builder: My scope is unlimited. . . Whenever the human mind calls out to me through the darkness, lam there. Wherever there are eager men with the courage to follow, I can lead. Whoever will put aside self-conceit, prejudice, superstition, I can serve. These are my patrons. . . But they must forsake all else and bow before me as their master, And I will in turn become their eternal servant. 16 I am the Builder: Education is my name.
