THE HIGHLANDER 1965 VOLUME 10 PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CLASS MERCER HIGH SCHOOL HARRODSBURG, KENTUCKY 2 DEDICATION This is the tenth anniversary of Mercer High School. In these ten years we have seen an in- crease in our student body, new subjects added to our curriculum, and new rooms added to the building itself. We are justly proud of our school’s progress these past ten years, and it is with pride that we are now ready to become graduates of Mercer High. As we face the future, we think of our education as a tree. From the trunk there are many branches representing the various ways we now shall go. However, just as the most important part of a tree is composed of its roots, so too the most important part of our education is composed of the roots of knowledge. These roots are formed by the basic fundamentals of the three R’s, reading, ‘riting, and ‘rithmetic; by the development of a desire to learn; and by the formation of study and work habits which have carried us through our high school days and will carry us through the days of our future, whatever that future may bring. Our roots had their beginnings in Cornishville, Fairview, McAfee, Rose Hill, Salvisa, and Shakertown. There they were nourished by patient and dedicated teachers who prepared us for high school work, who taught us to think, and who struggled unceasingly to instill in us a desire for, and an appreciation of, knowledge. Fairview is no more. Perhaps for that very reason those of us who spent our first years there remember Fairview and its teachers with particular nostalgia, just as the other members of our class remember their respective schools and teachers. Thus it is with deep appreciation from grateful hearts that we dedicate this year’s HIGHLANDER to our elementary school teachers. For this reason we understand the im- portance of an efficiently-run plant where this knowledge can be conveyed from teacher to stu- dent. The administration of the “Plant” our school, is of primary importance. We take this opportunity to pay tribute to their constant activity in our behalf—the wisdom of their exper- ience--their readiness to assist us in our under- takings, whether they be academic, athletic or social--and the many hidden tasks they perform, which contribute to the smooth functioning of our school system. Regardless of the fact that we students sometimes consider them to be some sort of monsters, there are times we have to admit they're a rather nice group of people to have around. At Mercer, the parents and teachers work together to help Mercer become a much better school. The main fund-raising event of the organization is the fall-festival held annually at the school, the proceeds from which are used to buy much needed equipment, books, and other supplies. PEP CLUB The National Beta Club is an organization of high school students of good mentality and character, credit- able achievement, and commendable attitudes. Membership therein signi- fies that the student has been desig- nated by the high school authorities as worthy of special recognition because of outstanding attainment and prom- ise. The chief function of the Beta Club is to serve the school and com- munity. It is to provide within the school a climate conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and moral development of every member of the student body. Other objectives are: to promote the general welfare of the school, to promote scholarship, to help solve problems that arise in school, to uphold school traditions and to develop high ideals of personal conduct. It is an educational, non-political farm youth or- ganization designed to develop agricultural leadership, character, thrift, scholarship, cooper- ation, citizenship, and patriotism. Through participating experiences in the FFA, members learn how to take part in meetings, to follow parliamentary procedure, to speak in public, and to cooperate with their fellow students in programs for individual and community betterments.
