'L7. I 4 Tiger Tales Mercedes was downed by Benavides in their opening game under a new system as a result of faulty ball handling and several key penalties. Final score was 20-0. An improved team of Tigers played a hotly contested game with the Mission Eagles which ended with Mission on top, 24-12. The Tigers were downed 4l-l2 by the Edinburg 'Bobcatsn after a futile defensive battle for possession of the ball. The scores made for Mercedes were from passes caught by Pemelton and Tankersley. The highlight of the Mercedes foot- ball season was a spectacular victory over our arch-rivals, Weslaco. The orange and white scored two touchdowns to defeat the Panthers l2-6. The points for Mercedes were gained by Ronnie Terry on a fumble and a pass from Henry Garcia to Ramon Chapa. Though the Lyford 'Bulldogs' pulled ahead in the beginning of the game, which was a see-saw for offensive possession, the Tigers quickly evened the score and, after a stalemate of a third quarter, came through with a story book' finish by defeating Lyford in the last 24 seconds of the game on a T. D. by Chapa and an extra point by tackle, Tony Krueger. The game between Donna and Mer- cedes started off with the Tigers ahead on an opening point scored by Pemelton. The opposites came back with an aerial attack that couldn't be stopped and out- scored the Tigers from the air. The ground attack of both teams was about even but the decisive points were made from the air. The remaining touchdown made by Mercedes was on a long run by Chapa. Final score, 41-12. Raymondville scored 23 points in a hard fought defensive ball game. The Tigers scored their only eight points of the game by an eighty-five yard drive to the Bearkats' eight and Sauceda's going over center for the tally. The extra points were made by a pass from Garcia to Chapa. Los Fresnos fell before the onslaught of a favored Tiger team. The attack was led by Pemelton and Chapa who made long gains by scoring drives. Pemelton scored three touchdowns while Chapa rang up one. Jaime Hinoiosa scored a two point conversion in the closing minutes of the game after the final touch- down by Chapa. The teamwork of Lynn Drawe and Claudio Castaneda spelled defeat for a hopeful La Feria team. The safety gained in the opening minutes of play told the difference in a close fought game that ended in a 20-18 defeat over the La Feria Lions.' The scores of the game for the 'Tigers' were made by Pemelton, who racked up the deciding scores for the Tigers. A hard fought game with Edcouch- Elsa ended in defeat for the Tigers, who scored 6 points in the game by Pemelton on a run over the middle. The Jackets scored 36 points throughout the game to end the season for Mercedes. iiqers Fight Hard Battles 'A' TEAM BACK ROW Cleft fo rightl: Coach Hild, R. Chapa, J. Sauceda, B. Solis, H. Garcia, G.
