In turning back to their freshman year, one can see the Class of '59 started out as lowly fresh- men in 1956, but soon they became sophomores and felt a little more at ease. Then came their junior year when they really had a grand time. Not only did they receive their class rings, but they also won the best as- sembly award and staged a wonderful and beautiful prom, the theme of which was A Japanese Tea Gardenf' TOP: President Larry Pressley. LAS The graduating class of 1959 throughout its busy four years at Merced High School was under the fine leadership of Jack Merritt, Felix Alvarez, Keith Crane, and Larry Pressley. Now, as seniors, the group has add- ed more memories to their four years at Merced High School. They will never forget Baccalaureate, the Senior Dinner, and--most of all-their glori- ous graduation. During the year the students and the public saw a great deal of these musicians. They went as far as Hayward for one of the non-league football games this year. The spirited group always backed up the basketball team at its home games. They livened up noon rallies and added a sparkling note to many assemblies. A small group, the Pep Band was always ready to help out at a moment's notice. These students gave much of their time to representing the student body. Their polished accomplishments were due to the hard work and enthusiasm of the director. Mr. Fredrik Steen. The Pep Band was the heart of the Merced High School rooting section, and these musicians deserve congratulations for their invaluable contributions to school spirit. DRC ESTE Once again the Merced High Orchestra has added much music and gaiety to the year. This group, consisting of about twenty members under the direction of Mr. Fredrik Steen, merits great praise for a wonderful and growing interest in music. Throughout the year the talent of the students in the or- chestra has been presented. The most memorable performances were their playing for the Christmas program and the annual Spring Concert. At both, very fine and well chosen numbers were played for audience enjoyment and appreciation. The goal of all violinists in orchestra is to earn the right to sit in the first chair. This is done by what is known to these students as challenging By challenging, the student can work his way to this chair and, if able to remain there, he is chosen as Concert Master or Mistress. CIENCE CLUB One of the newest clubs on the campus this year was the Science Club, which celebrated its second year at Merced High. This fine or- ganization was open to all science students or to any students who had an interest in science. The club's main object was to promote more interest in science at the high school age. Ad- visers Mr. Miller, Mr. Peat, and Mr. Weir guided the members along this path. The Science Club took several field trips. had interesting guest speakers, and viewed technical films. The club met every other Mon- day and had an average attendance of about forty enthusiastic members. The Camera Club had very interest- ing and educational experiences under the able supervision of Mr. Miller. The year began with the more expe- rienced members teaching the new members how to develop film, to con- tact print, and to enlarge pictures. The members also made portraits and tint- ed them with oil paints. Other things they did were the making of silhou- ettes and the developing of colored film. Each member was free to use the darkroom any day after school. The regular meetings were held every Wednesday after' school. Several field trips were taken during the year to places such as San Fran- cisco and Yosemite. The Silver Screen Club was organ- ized five years ago under the guidance of Mr. Blake, and it has grown to be one of the most industrious service clubs on the campus. The organization is responsible pri- marily for three things: C11 providing projectionists for all films shown in the classrooms, 121 handling all stage op- erations including all lighting and sound, C35 dealing with all student body activities such as setting up pub- lic address systems for games, rallies, and dances. Mr. Blake, the adviser, and the ofli- cers planned a program of recreation for the members. This year the club had a skating party in January, took field trips to the radio stations and the movie theaters after school hours, and enjoyed a picnic together at the end of the year. Most of the boys who play football started as underclassmen in B football. This gives them practice. skill, and good fundamentals so that they can go on to play on future varsity teams. This year the boys showed a great deal of spirit and enthusiasm in all of their games. Although they didn't win the championship, it should be mentioned that there were no seniors on the squad, and seven freshmen were on the starting team. All of the schools played this year had a majority of seniors facing our underclassmen. A very fine job of coaching was done by Coach Gilbert Mendonsa and Coach Ernie Devaurs. They put in much time helping the boys to develop football sense. Some of the outstanding players were Curt Rodrigs, Tom Solis, Don Wicker, Joe Plant, Art Gutierrez, and Bill Owens. B -wi!--P il.
