Class spirit was at an all-time peak and the school spirit was buoyed up because of it. Terrific spirit was shown at the football games and rallies. But the days kept whizzing by and before '56 realized it, another year was over. As a fitting climax to their last year came Senior Week with the breakfast, dinner, tacky day, ditch day, baccalau- reate and, at last, graduation. The class of '56 bids farewell to MUHS, but the friendships made here and the knowledge gained here will be treasured memories throughout their lives. 5 v TOP: Yell Leader Norma Neves. F. SENIUHS The constitution of the California Scholarship Federation was ratified on October 15, 1921. However, the Merced Chapter was not established until 1945. lts membership has steadily increased. To become or remain a part of the California Scholarship Federation, a school must be accredited by the University of California. The California Scholarship Federation believes in democracy at its finest. It encour- ages all students to develop their talents and abilities to the utmost and to accept in full rights and obligations of a true citizen. Its goal is Scholarship for Service. The purpose of this organization is to foster a higher standard of scholarship and broader ideals of serv- ice on the part of the students. A minumum of ten points is required for membership, two points of which can be made through extra-curricular activities. A grade of A counts three points and a grade of B one point. A failure in any subject bars a student from membership for the succeeding semester. At the time of graduation the chapter seal is embossed upon the diploma or the college transcript of the senior member. BACK ROYV: L. Applegate. A. Arnett, B. Wisner. I. Steinhauer. S. Herb. R. ' HUNUR HULL At the end of the first semester the MUHS seniors wore looks of anticipation on their faces. They could be seen averaging their grades and comparing notes on who would be an Honor Roll senior this year. The Honor Roll consists of seniors who have received an A or A- average during their years at Merced Union High School. They are the top students at Merced High, and they deserve many laurels for their scholastic achievements. The Honor Roll is chosen by various members of the faculty and the administration. The procedure for the selection of the Honor Roll students is very simple. All the grades from the last seven semesters are averaged together. The highest numerical value is used for each grade Then the fortunate students who have earned an A or A- average are notified. When the Honor Roll had been announced, there were many sighs of relief and regret. Merced Union High School is exceptionally proud of its Honor Roll students and wishes them well in their future years. STANDING: I. DuBose. D. Kauffman. D. Lane. I. Daniel. C. Cutter, T. Hunter. B. They were quite different this year, as they had the new SD look. ln l955-56 the luniors were entitled to sit in the balcony during assemblies which afforded them a better view. They had the whole balcony to themselves and were not surrounded by Freshmen. The Iuniors sponsored a successful dance after the game with Serra. The Freshman Class came in like lambs and went out like lions, At first they were curious and wanted to know what makes old MUHS tick. They fortn- ed special committees to answer ques- tions presented by their fellow class- mates. Their curiosity was satisfied when very capable and efficient Mrs. Lydia Willison and Mr. Ernest Devaurs helped them with their problems. Their school spirit is bountiful. They were both happy and disappointed to find that the traditional Freshman-Soplr omore Brawl had been abandoned They had heard rumors of former fresh- men being dragged through the mud. llli LEFT: Counselors Mr. Cochran. PEP BAND Every winter during the basketball season many different sounds pour lorth trom ou: gym. Ol course, there was the sound of rooters voices, but that Umelodious' sound that we heard came from something else. lt was the MUHS Pep Band at work. The Pep Band was a very active organization. Composed oi the more experienced mem- bers ofthe i'Marching lUU, it is an excellent-sounding musical aggregation. The Pep Band backed up the basketball team at all of its home games and played in several assemblies during the year. Our noon football rallies were livened up considerably by the sparkling renditions of the Pep Band. This small group was always ready to help out at a moments notice. Much of this is due to the hard work oi the director, Mr Fredrik Steen. Without his spirit, enthusiasm, and diligence the Pep Band could not have achieved such recognition. The Pep Band members were always ready and willing to do more than was expected of them to support the school. They represented the student body on many varied occasions. No matter where the Pep Band was, it always did its best to give a good impression ot MUHS. This animated group deserves many congratulations for the line job accomplished this year. EDUCATION CLUB The Merced Education Club is an organization of students interested in entering the teaching prcfession. lt was organized during the l953-54 school year by Mr. Boock. During the past year Mrs. Ritchey has been the faculty sponsor. The purpose of this group is not only to form an association between those who plan to become teachers, but to present to these people a picture of teaching as a profession. It is hoped that a greater under- standing of the advantages and possibilities in this field will attract a greater number of capable people, since the opportunities in this profession are almost unlimited. Various speakers were provided for the meetings of the club. One of these, Mr. W. Max Smith, Merced City Superintendent of Schools, arranged for field trips into the city schools for those interested in elementary school work. Members were given an opportunity to act as counselors in the Mer- ced Outdoor Education program for sixth graders, This is a project in nature study and community living sponsored by the Merced County Schools Department. nf' McCallum Clin an Robertson SECOND ROW Petru Ta lor Henderson Sawyer Ad- LEFT: BACK HOW: Baxter, Cutter. - 9 I - 1 5 I Y ' , ' , ' viser Ritchey. With only ct sprinkling of veterans Coach Bill Ioerg and Assistant Coach Hooks Devaurs built a strong defensive club around many of last year's I. V. and Freshman team members. What the Bears lacked in pitching and seasoning, they made up tor with their fine defensive play and timely nit- ting in some games. At other times the inexperience showed in these departments. As the season progressed, the younger players gained more experience, and the squad gathered strength, Look- ing forward to many returning lettermen and much pro- mising new material, the coaches expect that the 1957 team should be topnotch.
