U. H. S. to the effect that with the graduation of the seniors in June will come the retirement of Miss Louise Norvell, Dean of Girls and Vice Principal since l92O. lt is a woman's prerogative to change her mind, and we hope Miss Nor- vell will do just that and decide to stay with us, Her many years of instruction and counseling have been deeply appreciated by the stu- dents and teachers of Merced High. Miss Norvell graduated from Merced High in l902 and has been a member of the faculty since l9lO. A graduate of Stanford University in l907, she started her teaching career at Corning High School in IQO8, Miss Norvell has also been an active member of the Merced County Board of Education. We appreciate her many years of cheer- ful, patient, and kindly devotion to the ideals of education. The graduates, community, faculty, and students join in wishing Miss Norvell long life, health, and happiness in her retirement. M155 LDLIIEE NDRVELI., VICE PRINCIPAL DEAN UF GIRLS Wu. . Ui lVl.l.l.l-l MISS MARY BRUN The French tricolor waves on our title page in salute to Miss Mary Brun of the French Department to whom this 1953 El Rodeo is af- fectionately dedicated. Our moderne-French theme has been carried out in her honor, and we have dedicated the yearbook to her because of her never-ceasing efforts in behalf of our graduating seniors. Perhaps we have not fully recognized the fact that Miss Brun cheer- fully gives a great deal of her time, especially in the latter part of the school year, to checking and aiding in the selection of the schol- arships that are given to our seniors on graduation day. This involves contacting all schools and organizations which offer college or career opportunities to high'school seniors. For nineteen years Miss Brun has given generously of her time and interest to Merced High students. May the future hold much happi- ness and good fortune for this friendly petite teacher and may she always be appreciated by us students as our true and sincere friend. They worked hard to give candy sales and dances to raise money. During their sophomore year the honor of '53 was lost in the Brawl, just as it was in the freshman year, and so for two years they had to sit in the back of the auditorium during assemblies. But '53 came back the next year with the best Prom that was ever given-and it will always be remembered just that way! Last, but not least, came this, the senior year which ends the history of the '53 class. Yet, closing their career here at Merced High, they can say that they have completed four rich years of life that will never be forgotten. fNot pictured in the Senior Section are graduates Bill Molina and Garland Moore.l Top Strip: President Duane Blakeman. Middle Strip: Treasurer Keith Ann Albin, Vice President Marvin Hansen, Secretary Dueda Gotcher. Bottom Strip: The Junior- Senior Prom had a French theme and was enjoyed by everyone there.
