Under the leadership of our class officers, we have taken part in many activities. One of the most important events of the current year was the tradi- tional Freshman Reception vvhich was held on the night of Gctober 26. The Gymnasium was decorated to convey the effect of A Big Red Top Circus. During the evening of dancing a short program was given and refreshments were served. S. has stored away another successful year, filled with activity, to be remembered by more than 1200 strong. Our enthusiastic participation in the Yosemite Valley League furthered the inter- est in our games as did the pep rallies, made successful by the cooperation of the band, and after the game dances. Due to our entry into the Yosemite League, a colorful rally committee was organized to promote sportsman- ship. As always, the encouragement and cooperation of our friend and ad- viser, Mr. Frank Poytress, have been invaluable. November 12 brought to us thc San Jose Brass Choir, and on January 5 We were entertained by the accomplished Polish singer, Dina Amovitz. To make a long story short, vve, the student body of 1940-41, are proud of our school year and sincerely hope that 1942 has as much success and joy in store for us. Under the able leadership of Phyllis McConnell, meetings were held every month. The business part of these meetings was followed by an entertainment program. At Thanksgiving and Christmas, baskets for the needy were distrib- uted. The girls were able to collect the material for these through noon dances, with canned food as the admission. The League members also pre- pared small gift boxes for the children. The outstanding affair of the season was the Hi -linx, given on March 28 for the girls and their mothers, with Livingston and Le Grand league members also invited. This was the traditional costume party which always proves so entertaining. The play was based on a search of a suitable husband for Harriet Fol- lis. Complications arise when two young men answer the matrimonial ad- vertisement which was put in a local paper. Hilarious comedy was afforded by the antics of Norman lfollis, dis- guised as a maid, and by the plumber. Uncle Silas and Mrs. Pottle also added to the general amusement. Approximately 550 students are carried to and from school over a route of 720 miles a day, at an operating cost of fifteen cents per mile. Host of the bus repairs are effected by our advanced students in our own shop. This work is done under the direction of lfranlc Silva, jr., and under the supervision of Mr. lfred Robles, our shop instructor. Our bus drivers are carefully selected from boys who have a sense of responsibility as well as a good driving' ability. The drivers have to undergo a Strict physical examination by a physician and a written and practical driv- ing examination given by the Highway Patrol. The Academic students comprise thirty-six per cent of the present Senior Class. Although the class is one of the largest ever to graduate, this percentage is about the same as that of other years. lt is impossible to know how many of the seventy-six Academic students will continue their educa- tions in colleges, but the number will probably be very high. If the Academic student has done good work during his four years, his name appears on the high school honor roll along with the honor students of other departments. To achieve this, the student must have earned fifteen credits rated at or over the grade B, ,Ns in the tleneral and Coinmercial divisions, scholarships are offered yearly by the colleges to those taking' an Academic course. Any student may try for a scholarship which, if won, will pay his college tuition. This department strives not only to develop the qualities of accuracy and efficiency, but also initiative and dependability. The season opened with two successful encounters with Ceres and Livingston. The llears then entered the gridiron Wars of the Yosemite League with a 13-0 victory over Edison Tech. This was followed with a 6-0 win over a powerful Roosevelt High eleven. The Bears' winning streak then went on the rocks, and they were taken into camp by the Fresno High Valley Champs to the tune of 33-6, and by Madera, their traditional rivals, with a score of 13-6. To avenge these defeats the Bears brought in a 56-0 victory at the expense of Fresno Tech. Qnly five lettermen returned and around these, Coach Joerg attempted to build his varsity squad. To add to the odds against them. the Bears had five first class schools from the Yose- mite League to compete with: Edison Tech, Fresno Tech, Madera, Roosevelt, and Fresno High. In the first round of league play the Bears came through with only one victory, against Madera, and four defeats. Grim determination led them to seek revenge, and in the second round they promptly registered victories over the Roosevelt Roughriders and the Fresno Tech Wolves. llowever, in the final game the home squad was humbled by an inspired Madera team, 37-32. Thus, a season had been completed with seven defeats and three hard earned victories. Coach Milton XX'oods's middleweight squad, composed mostly of last year's lightweight team, went through a somewhat difficult season, finishing in third place with five victories and five defeats. As usual, skippered by Coach Billy Joerg, and drilled thoroughly in the rudirnents of the game, this year's squad had proven itself dangerous at all timesg given a little luck it may make baseball history. How the Bears fare in their first year of Yosemite League competition depends greatly upon the pitching and hitting ability of their star pcrlormer, Johnny Del Dotto. In spite of the fine records of the Bears, it was a different story at the beginnmg. Inclement weather and an unruly track had confined their early season efforts to a minimum. This was due principally to the well-rounded program followed in the gym classes. The typical week began with calisthenics on Monday. Games of or- ganization, such as relays and circle games, were played on Tuesday. XVed- nesday included the entertaining, as well as beneficial, exercise of folk, ath- letic, and ballroom dancing. Thursday and lfriday were given over to the seasonal sports, such as volleyball, basketball, tennis, track and baseball. Varsity teams were chosen in each class. Keen rivalry was shown be- tween the teams at the interclass contests held at noon. The system of honor points provided the girls with a real incentive for taking bart in as many fields as possible. Points were awarded to cap- tains, members of varsity teams, and players in winning groups. The awards were: small M for 000 points, large Bl for 1000 points, and a star for over 1000 points.
