U. H. S. student hody as a year of great accomplishments. More activities have heen held, and more school spirit has heen shown, par- ticularly in the football season, than in any other recent year. The cooperation of the hand and the newly organized Block M Society contrihuted largely to this. ln order to promote good sportsmanship and to further the interest in the games, many Hpepn rallies were held, at which the students showed great enthusi- asm. On November 15, Nlerced High presented a program for Madera Student hody, who returned this visit with a presentation for us on Novemher 18. Livingston, on March 9, also favored us with a rally after we had entertained them at their school. January 12 hrought to us the accomplished violinist, Karen Tuttle. ln March, Modesto Junior College entertained with some of its talent, and Naturalist Harwell offered us an illustrated lecture on Yosemite Valley. All in all, we feel that this year has heen, a great one, and we sincerely hope that the student loody of 1959-40 will he as successful in athletics, social activities, and scholastic achievements. It is a comedy in which a girl, Marion, has to choose between marriage and a political career. Her father, Judge Patterson, is a candidate in the nomination for the Supreme Court. Giving him additional worries, his two married daughters, Myra and Estelle, leave their husbands and come home. Mrs. Patterson, the Judges wife, is by no means comforted hy this occurrence and fulfills her threat to go home to her mother. Willie Patterson, the young son adds a sparkling hit of comedy to all scenes. The characters of Aunt Niiliy tiVlrs. Patterson,s sisterf, Grandpa fthe Judges fatheri, Stuhhins fthe Judges political assistantf, and Polly tVVinie's girl friendf, were equaiiy important in making the play a success. Now and then he loolced up furtively, as if afraid of being recognized. He wallced up the broad avenue leading to the top of the hiil and stood looking down at the lights ol the ci'ly. A lonely boy, he remembered, had once stood in the same place and thought that the lights loolced like jewels on dark velvet. That had been a long time ago, almost thirty years. As he stood there, silent, motionless, a Hood of memories came rushing hack to him-and among them all, not one that wasnyt bitter and full of pain ............... Charles had been a frail child, and ill health combined with shyness had made him a rather disagreeable one. Perhaps people might have been able to see through his shyness to the reaily brilliant mind which lay beneath if it hadnyt been for Edwin. Edwin, Charlesss elder brother, was strong, handsome, and clever. Edwinys stronger, more dominating character brought out the worst in Charles. From the first, Charles had been conscious of a silent wall of disapproval which surrounded him. Everyone was against him-parents, teachers, friends. And it wasn't always silent. Charles, quiet, morose, uninteresting Charles, would never amount to anything, the voices of the Town predicted. The voices of the Town had predicted that about people before and had watched it come true. So it had been throughout his high school years. No one ever paid much attention to Charles. It was Edwin who was elected class president, Edwin who was the football hero. And in college, too. only Edwin was aslced to join an exclusive fraternity. He explained it all to Charles. They didnyt have room for wealdings-they wanted only the best men. The Town had never been able to 'understand what it was that lovely Caroline Jennings saw in Charles, so no one was at all surprised when Edwin toolc her away from his brother. You see, dear, Caroline had said softly, as if trying to ease the hurt, alt isn,t as if I won,t always love you with a, very special sort of love. ltys just that l want to marry someone who will make a success of his life-and I know Edwin willf' Soon after that Charles had left the Town. It was best. the voices mur- mured, much the best. A boy like that, destined to be a failure could only be a burden to his family ...... ............. The man turned away, bitterly. Why had he returned to torture himself with memories. he wondered? Why rub salt on old wounds? They had said that it was best that he went. Vvhy had he ever come back?
