Jack Roth Advisor . . . Mr. Frank Poytress STUDENT BUUU UFFICEHS The Student Body of M. U. H. S., over 1,000 strong, can look back on the 1937-38 term as one of the most successful in the history of the school. The students enthusiastically sup- ported the teams in all athletic contests this year, especially in the Fresno football game, and the Valley Championship basketball game with Bakersfield. They had reason to be proud of their showing, for this year was the first year Merced ever beat Modesto in football and the first basketball team ever to indulge in the Valley Finals. For the first time in the history of the school, the pep rallies held before our football games, were broadcast over KYOS directly from our school auditorium. The student body was presented with a program on December 9, by Audrey Scheller and her marimba and on April 6, by the Fresno State College Band. XYC Wish to thank our faculty advisor, Mr. Poytress, for his untiring cooperation on all our undertalfings, and to wish next year's student body a successful year. -NYalter Crawford. It is our desire that this book be of interest to the students, not for one class, but for the entire student body. Although We have introduced modernism and originality of design, We have preserved the tradition and purpose of the Year Book. The entire staff of the El Rodeo Wishes to thank Mrs. Sturdevant and Mr. Poytress for their time, effort, and Worry spent in the publication of the book. The El Rodeo has recorded in it the activities of the serious and lighter moments of our school year, 1937-1938. In later years let this book bring back those memories. UDEU l938 IVIARGARET GUILFORD Sales Manager El HUIJEU l938 For the school year of l937-1938, the Merced Union High School has ventured toward a bigger and better school. Naturally a bigger and better school would mean a bigger and better year book. Such a book means more money is to be spent for its production. Without the support of our local business men and their firms, we would not have been able to give you the El Rodeo you deserve this year. H you would like to show your appreciation, spend Merced money in Merced with our Merced merchants, the best oi which are listed in the back of our 1938 El Rodeo. -Bruce Graham, Business Manager. I . BUS THHHSPUHTHTIUH Merced Union High School can be proud of operating one of the largest bus transportation systems in the state, covering a radius of twenty-five miles, with most distant points at Lingard, El Nido, Atwater, Wlinton and Merced Falls. Approximately 425 students are carried to and from school over a route of 585 miles a day, at an operating cost of a little less than fourteen cents a mile. Most of the bus repairs are effected by our aspiring young mechanics in Auto Shop, under the direction of Mr. Robles and Frank Silva. Mr. Covert C Chief to the boysj has charge of the tools and supplies. Our bus drivers are carefully selected from those boys who have a sense of responsibility as Well as good driving ability. They undergo a strict physical examination by a physician, and both a written and practical driving examination given by the Highway Patrol. Students selected as drivers must be eighteen years of age and in the best physical condition. As the school year draws to a close, we are proud of keeping the admirable record of never having had a serious accident.-Charles Minor. r....,...., v .. The first number, which took us back to the days of bull-fighting in Spain, was acted in pantomime. It was the well- known story of Ferdinand, the bull. A trio, consisting of lla Poytress, Dorothy Jane Ingols and Rosemary Burns, gave several vocal selections. Last, but not least, Bill llowell very adept at Egyptian-Ella danc- ing kept the audience chuckling, as did the dancing chorus of Junior boys. THE SENIOR PROGRAM February 25 the Seniors presented to the school a variety of talented members of the Senior Class. Bruce Graham and orchestra opened the program with a number, after which Bruce acted as master of ceremonies. Evelyn Corvello, our star soprano, and Ray- mond Hibler, our talented young tenor, favored us with vocal selections. The Cross- Eyed Cowboy on the cross-eyed horse and the jokes of the orchestra players kept the audience in hysterics, while the mystic Black Dot revealed interesting thoughts regarding the futures of several students. All in all, those who attended felt the hour of entertainment was well worth seeing. THE JUNQOR PLAY The Junior play, Romance is a Racketf' presented December l7th, was one of the dramatic successes of the year. Dorothy -lane lngols, as leading lady, and Jimmie Otterson, as leading man, credited them- selves with their fine performances. David Mcllartin, who acquired an Italian accent, to play the role of the innkeeper, acted his part exceptionally well. Lavina Lilley, as a youngster, with her spine-chilling screams, and the suporting cast added to the success of the play. The Merced boys played better hall than was expected of them. On April 22, the team opened the league contests with Le Grand. For three days the Juniors and Seniors battled for first place. At the end of the meet it was found that the Seniors had come from behind to win by less than two points. The Freshmen took third place and the Sophomores fourth. Sparkplug of the four-year men was johnny Clayton, who amassed a total of five first places. Much is expedzed of Johnny later in the season. April 9, the team went to Fresno, Where a defeat was handed them by the VYarriors. The success of the track team this year will be the result of having an excellent coaching staff. Headed by Billy Joerg, the sta-ff consists of Coach VX'oods, Coach Lewis, and others from the faculty. XVith a number of instructors such as these, the track men receive more individual attention. Although the squad is only mediocre this year, it will attempt to garner as many points as possible in the Valley Meet and the Fresno Relays.
