EL RODEO sm, Freshman Notes Q Miss EVANS The Freshman class held its first meeting, under the direction of Mr. Poytress, and elected the above officers. In February our president, Seth Bullis, moved away and his place was taken by Joe Sanders. There are about three hundred members in the class. The Freshmen were formally initiated into the school's activities when the Fresh- man reception was given, on October third. The Frosh were the clowns, acrobats, singers, and other actors in the circus, with the Sophomores as the audience. Two weeks later the Freshman return was given. At that time many members of the class showed promising talent. The gym was gaily decorated in orange and black, and the dance was well attended. The class members showed good spirit when they gathered a large amount of wood for the fire rally. The class has been well represented in football, basketball, track, and baseball. --BEATRICE ROBINSON. CRA Ns'roN In the latter part of September, the Sophomores held their first class meeting and officers were elected. On October third the Frsehmen entertained everyone by performing in a one-ring circus, under the direction of the Sophomores as ring-maters. Two weeks later, October 17, the return was held. The Freshmen were perfect hosts and everyone had a very enjoyable time. .Ieannette Masehio, one of our second-year classmates, was leading lady in the school operetta, MIle. Modistef' Many Sophomores were also in the chorus. Our class rated second in track, which is noteworthy. The light varsity football team was also represented by a few Sophomores, and there were class stars in tennis, basketball, and baseball. -Doaorri Y HARVEY. ,fav K i, SOPHOMORE BOYS Paggv 'l'hi1'ly-th1'w- ifxx c c ,, . ,f X, s 9 , 3.1, T , ' -1 f , ' ,ff ' ' Y' j, . ybgicmi, Q, ,- J.: ' T' W- 1 Zi:-A fJ, f: . --E-A A '- v'- Y A-pr- I -L - -V -Q A I X .y X by-B EL. IRVINE The Senior Class of 1931 is the largest ever to be graduated from Merced Union High School. It has not only the distinction of being the largest class, but it is also one of the most active. We owe our success largely to the untiring efforts of our class officers, and of our class advisors, Miss Curtis 1927-30, and Mrs. Irvine, 1931. Even during its first two years, the Senior class figured prominently in all social, dramatic, scholastic, and athletic events. In our junior year our Junior Stunt was very successful. The junior-Senior Prom was one of the most colorful events ever staged by any class. Truly, we owe a great debt of gratitude to our class advisors, who greatly helped us in all of our undertakings. -jol-IN ZENTNER. The principal activities of the El Rodeo staff are missing appointments for group photographs and putting names in alphabetical order. If all the energy spent in publishing the El Rodeo were put forth into useful channels it would reach around the world. The most pathetic thing about the El Rodeo is that after the staff has overworked their respective brains all year for something new, and struggled to get the book out on time against overwhelming odds, the final result of it all is just another El Rodeo. Under the direction of Mr. F. V. Craig it has attained new accomplishments in classical music. The school has invested in expensive instruments for our use and furnishes free instruction. A class of beginners has made marked progress. The orchestra credits its success to diligent practice, for it rehearses one period each day, and to the variety of music furnished by the school. Overtures, marches, and other selections have provided a broad field of study. This year the musical comedy, Mlle. Modiste, was greatly aided by the accom- paniment of the orchestra. The musical rendition of the operetta was successfully given. The faculty enacted a new rule at the beginning of the term with regard to orchestra credit. The rule was that each musician should practice the same amount of time outside of school as he did in school. This prompted a great deal of practice and added greatly to the efficiency of the orchestra. y .- f 7 Page Forty-two 'X' FX NW v , f ! . . K X' V ,i - :V XV ' . ui f i ,fi . Modistef' by Victor Herbert, was admirably presented by the chorus classes, under Mrs. Irvine's direction, on the evening of March 20. Fifi, a little shop girl, aspires to become an opera star. She will not marry Captain Etienne De Bouvray, because of the objections of his uncle, the Comte De St. Mar, who threatens to disinherit Etienne unless he ceases his attentions to Fifi. Fifi becomes a prima donna, with the financial assistance of an American millionaire, and the count finally consents to her marriage with Etienne. Miss Jeanette Maschio, as Fifi, gave an excellent performance and won the admira- tion of the audience with her sweet voice. Newton Murphy, Donald Wuertleyf, and Miss Rosie Schaefer also won merited applause. Catherine Cronkite and Elden Cole again played opposites and were welcomed by their audience. All the members of the cast fitted their parts very well. One of the outstanding characters was Sherman Hewitt, in the role of a wealthy count with the gout. Irvine has produced some very fine chorus numbers. Her work includes numbers of a very high standard for chorus, quartets, and trios. An outstanding number was The Highwaymanf' a cantata for mixed voices, the music by Deems Taylor and the ballad by Alfred Noyes. This was sung by the fifth, sixth, and seventh chorus divisions, the baritone solo being sung by Newton Murphy. Mrs. Irvine considers this an especially fine piece of work and feels well repaid for her efforts. Senior Play The Senior class of '31 presented the three-act comedy, Come Out of the Kitch- en, by A. E. Thomas, before a packed house on the evening of January 23rd. It was a great success, due to the fine direction of Mrs. Irvine. This was the first time in several years that a three-act play has been attempted by the Senior class, instead of three one-act plays. Miss Catherine Cronkite played the leading role. Her Irish brogue, as maid to the Yankee northerner, was cleverly done. As leading man Elden Cole fitted his role of wealthy Yankee equally well. Newton Murphy interpreted his part as the butler in an amusing manner. Miss Jean Cross, as the older but more sensitive sister of the Danger- field family, played her part very well. Rosalie Heller as a society woman, Billie Snell, as the black mammy, Robert Robinson as the statistical poet, and others, including Cameron Long and 'Wayland Petty, played their interesting and humorous roles in a manner worthy of much praise. In the annual big game with Madera the local team won, with the close score of 7-6. Norman De Vaurs was awarded the valuable player cup by Mr. Meany. This award is a new feature and should serve as an inspiration to future football players. Stephen Galvin and Emmet Hamilton were the outstanding linesmen of the season. Eleven of the sixteen lettermen graduate in june. These men proved their value in a Spring practice game, which they won from the undergraduates 20-0. Witlm only Eddie Bunnell, Clinton Reding and Captain-elect jirsa as a nucleus for next year's team prospects are not too bright. Basketball was a success, despite the poor showing of the A team. Captain Zach- arias, Covert, and Swords were the mainstays of the team. In the B class league Cap- tain Montersino's middleweights enjoyed mild success, losing but two games. The C's, under Captain Zentner, went undefeated for the season. Track opened with a Senior victory in the interclass meet. The Merced athletes did so well in all the meets that followed that Merced was able to compete for the Valley title. Captain Hamby, Captain Guy, and George Lady made exceptional marks. Although the tennis team's accomplishments were limited to the Tri-county Cham- pionship, better chances are in sight for next year. 'This was due, in a large measure, to the well-rounded program followed in all classes. The week was well started on Monday with calisthenics to limber up the whole system. Games of organization, such as relays and circle games, were played on Tues- day. Wednesday included the entertaining, as well as beneficial, exercise of folk, athletic, and clog dancing. Thursday and Friday were given over to the seasonal sports, such as basketball, baseball, track, tennis, and volleyball. Round Robin tournaments of the above sports were played during the gym class throughout the year, and the Varsity teams were chosen from these. Keen rivalry was exhibited in all of the games, and a large audience testined to the popularity of such a program. The Seniors, with their greater experience in the game of basketball, emerged the champions after many close games. The winners of the tennis tournaments in the various classes were as follows: Mar- garet Svtutsman, 3rd hour, Helen Harvey, 4th hour, and Bernice Loose, 8th hour. As yet the championship has not been decided, but keen interest is being shown in this sport. g The problem of keeping everyone interested and in regular attendance was well handled by Mrs. Stratton's splendidly organized program, which even included the sport of tossing horseshoes and jack stones. He said it was no longer necessary. Billie Snell: I'm reading a continued story in one of his waiting room magazines. A professor, coming to one of his classes a little late, found a most uncomplimentary caricature of himself drawn on the board. Turning to the student nearest him, he angrily inquired: Do you know who is responsible for that atrocity? No, sir, I don't, replied the student, but I strongly suspect his parents. Miss Horn: Make a sentence using the word evanescent. Mary Walker: Well, well, well, evanescent my old friend Tommy. Luxie Reding: It took eight sittings. john Zentner: What? Have you been having your picture taken? Luxie: No, learning to skate. Mr. Poytress: Signa, what does the formula PbSO4 signify? Signa O.: It's right on the end of my tongue, but I can't get it out. Mr. Poytress: Well, you'd better spit it out quick--it's poison. Elsie Lee White: I never had such a tough time in my life. First I got angina pectoris, then tuberculosis, pneumonia and finally appendicitis. I don't know how I ever pulled through. It was the hardest spelling test I ever had. The average fellow lets his girl get on the car first, not because it's polite, but because it's a treat. Tommy: I am burning with love for you. Signa: Oh, don't make a fuel of yourself. Henry Avery: Where do the jellyfish get their jelly? Bob McAuley: From the ocean currents, I guess. THE BRUTE! Jean Cross: My brother threw a cake at me. One that I made myself, too! Rosalie Heller: The brute! He might have killed you. PERFECTLY SILLY Eddie Bunnell: I never walk under a ladder. I think it's most unlucky. 'VU Tom Flannagan: Well! I call that silly. I just place the tips of my little Nl fingers together, bend the other three into the palm, cross the thumbs, say Magnum ' li, Bonum, and walk right under any ladder.
