Coach Jim Murrin 88 Football TREASURE CHEST The Mepham’s Football team finished the 1986 87 season with a disappointing 3-5 record. The team faced adversity from the start. The Pirates faced a tough schedule going into the season. They had other problems such as a light-weight line, but they had speedy backs (Caesar Agustus, Lonnie Lyons) and a strong-armed quarterback (James McDermott). The Pirates won their First game against Wantagh 30-0 and it looked like this year's team would be going to the playoffs again. Injuries to key members in the next three games lost the hopes for another playoff season. The Mepham team hung tough; and. using freshman and J.V. talent, they built a good foundation for Mepham teams to come. The Pirates won their last two games and the seniors went out with some good memories. Captain Doug Foster made the All-County team while the other team captains Tim Ryan and Santy Gallone made the All-Conference team. Football 89 CELEBRATING OUR TIN Seated: Sheila Pl'istcr, Martha Hanson, Marcie Wartel, Caryn Hasset, and Ann Lau. Standing: Nicole Brodeur, I.isa Gricco. Watch those wicked scissors Marcie Wartel! The 1986 season for the girls’ soccer team can best be described as bitter-sweet.” We played our hearts out, and our 5-3-1 league record can certainly attest to that. However, our playoff dreams were crushed when, needing a win, we had to settle for a tie to North Shore in the season s final game. We came so close but a single point prevented our clinching a playoff spot. We received a small consolation at the Nassau County Soccer Dinner, where we received the overall team sportsmanship award; we outscored 43 other teams from the county for this award. Maybe, in the end, we did have the last laugh. We can't thank Coach McManus enough for the good season and the great times that he helped make possible. He tolereated our bad attitudes and hot tempers for so long, so we owe him one! Next year we ll bring it home! Ann Marie Corless Girls’ Soccer 91 CELEBRATING OUT TIME Kneeling: Scan Kenny. Brian Cantley. Stephen Capozzi, Michael Solomon. David Skulnik, Bob Frazier. Standing: Coach Muscard. Shawn Riley. Andy Berliner. Rich Wartel. Brian Freeman. Harry Arianas. Craig Vaream. Sal Aiello. Matt Mogul. 92 Boys’ Soccer TREASURE CHEST This year’s Mepham soccer ream was predicted by Newsday to win their division. This was due to the return of nine of their eleven starters. The team was led by senior captains Sean Kenny and Craig Vaream. Sean and Craig were varsity starters for their three years at Mepham. Sean, along with fullback Matt Mogul, led a defense which was considered to be one of the best. The defense was also helped by the fine play off the bench by senior Brian Freeman. Craig led a halfback corps which included seniors Steve Capozzi and Robert Frazer. The offense spearheaded by juniors Shaun Riley and James Cantley, as well as seniors Harry Arianas and Rich Wartel, was consistent throughout the season. The season started with upset victories over Bethpage and rival Calhoun. This winning attitude carried into divisional play where the Pirates compiled an 8-5-1 record finishing third in their division. This fine record enabled the team to qualify for the playoffs. The Pirates lost a tough 2-1 double overtime game to Farmingdale in the first round of the playoffs. Post-season recognition was given to Sean Kenny who was named All-League, as well as Craig Vaream. Matt Mogul, and Shaun Riley, who were named All-Conference. Even though the team did not meet its’ expectations, it had a season the players can be proud of. This year’s Mepham soccer team had one of the most successful seasons in recent years. It was a season I’m sure, most players will not forget. by Craig Vaream Boys' Soccer 93 TREASURE CHEST S w G I I M R M L I S’ N G Joanna Hahn (co-captain), Susan Graham, Tami Rantz, and Cathy Collette (co-captain). This statement is what keeps many people from joining the Bellmore Merrick swim team. However, there are some girls in Mepham who do not mind getting up at that time to swim, in the morning, for an hour before school. In the beginning, the Mepham Squad of the Bellmore-Merrick swim team were almost strangers to each other. But soon we were a close knit group. We are always supporting each other and doing our best for the team. Coach Peters is also very supporting to us. individually and as a team. He always makes us strive for our best. That is the reason why we don’t complain too much when coach Peters asks us to swim an event that we are not used to. Coach Peters works us hard, and we complain while we practice, but when we beat our personal records, we all know it is worth the pain. We have put in many hard practices during the season and we have seen the results in our meets. Although the team has not done as well as we had hoped, we all achieved personal successes, of which we are proud. The Mepham Squad consists of five terrific swimmers who committed themselves to the team. The following made up our team: Cathy Collette and Joanna Hahn, the captains, Susan Graham, Susan Jainchill, and Tami Rantz. Get in line and smile!!! Anyone within the hearing range of the Mepham Kickline's practice area would recognize these common calls. Throughout the year, kicks and steps have been combined, altered, and perfected to create the Mepham Firette halftime routines. It has taken alot of our time and work to put together our performances. At times we became frustrated during a practice, but with the help of our coach, Mrs. Banta, we always managed to pull ourselves together. The girls have worked hard in chorographing and perfecting eight routines this year. Among them are Fame, Broadway, Lime, Bed Of Nails, and Bon Jovi. We enjoyed performing for both football and basketball games and the highlight of our season was our participation in the District Festival. This year has been a good one. We purchased our second uniforms with the money we fundraised, held a Thanksgiving food drive, participated in the Tricia Challenge, purchased a new sound system, made a trip to Radio City Music Hall to see the Christmas show starring the Rockettes, and supported the cheerleaders during competition. The squad is made up of 23 girls including captains Anne Roderick and Lisa Klancer. The girls would like to thank Mrs. Banta for her time and effort this year. Mepham’s Cheer-leaders will blow your mind ...” The 1986-7 Mepham Varsity Cheerleaders have had a successful year. We started practicing at the end of August getting ready for the opening game. Then came Homecoming. We led the parade from the Bellmore Fire Department to Mepham for the big game: Mepham vs. Garden City. Unfortunately we lost, but we were still rooting our team on. On November 30 we competed in the Nassau County Cheerleading Competition at Valley Stream North High School. We faced many problems along the way, but we pulled through and placed third out of ten schools. We were the only Nassau County school to place in the competition. There are many people we would like to thank for their support during the year: of course, we thank Mrs. Lambert, our advisor and friend, who was there when we needed her and when we had problems. We would also like to thank the Kickline and the J.V. Cheerleaders for helping us while preparing for the competition. kneeling: Stacey Schain. Janine Roberts. Meryl Wcinsaft. Fayth Litkc. Once again, we performed a combined cheer with varsity at the Fall Pep Rally and on Homecoming Day. We marched in the Homecoming Parade, had successful bake sales, purchased new basketball uniforms, attended the football dinner, and cheered at football and basketball games. In addition, we started our own traditions. We worked hard and entered the Nassau County Cherleading Competition. We proudly brought a second place plaque home to Mepham. We also had a new cheerleader, our mascot, 10 year old Kelly Degree. In February, we will take part in the Bellmore-Merrick District Cheerleading and Kickline Festival. Many people have been in this growing drama club, have gone on to be in drama organizations of their colleges and have pursued acting careers. Through the years the drama club has performed in many productions. Some of our plays have been The Good Doctor, A Murder is Announced, The Pajama Game, and Stars in Their Eyes. However, all these productions wouldn't have been the smash hits that they were if it weren t for our director, the heart of the Mepham Drama Club. Mr. George Nider. The rehearsals for the plays are both filled with hard work and fun. We all work hard to make the plays a smash and to keep up the drama club s fine reputation. Mephamites rallied behind Student Government's sponsored Spirit Week ‘86 to kick-off a year of exciting activities. In addition to our traditional Pep Rally and Homecoming activities. Student Government is actively involved in Latchkey. Members volunteer to help out in local elementary schools, and are instrumental in the success of the after school program. Once again Student Government members collected toys for the Perkins’ Children's Institute; this is our fourth year, and the generous support of the entire Mepham student body and staff is greatly appreciated. A school newspaper should educate and entertain while providing a medium through which students and faculty members can express their opinions in a responsible fashion. During the last several years the Buccaneer has been molded into a quality publication. It is this standard of excellence that the Buccaneer Staff wanted to uphold and surpass in attaining those goals. With that in mind, F.ditor-in-Chief Pamela Silverman and managing Editor Victoria Vecchione spent four days in conference held at Amherst College to prepare. From this trip they brought back many ideas. New folio lines and masthead were two cosmetic improvements. Pam and Vicki also decided to use the Man on the street,” questionaire and athlete in the lead. feature to involve more students in their paper. Although Amherst College provided an educational experience from which Pam and Vicki aquired much knowledge, they knew the paper would be only as fine as the staff made it. Fortunately, the Buccaneer staff was comprise of several experienced members and many students who were anxious to learn. Together the staff and adviser Jack Rice would fulfill the goals in providing an informative and entertaining publication. The news sections proved interesting. Before each issue News Editor, Gary Brendel consulted with Mr. Rutley to insure coverage of important upcoming events. Usually two students share the news editorship. However, Gary did a fantastic job handling the section solo. The Buc publicized student achievements. Michelle Hollander. National Merit Semifinalest and Brad Darcy, PTA State Art winner both received recognition. Another article beautifully written by Jeff Schuarz introduced Superintendent, Dr. Marc Berstein. In the January issue, students were familiarized with the new parking procedures which were implemented at the beginning of the second semester. Objectively is imperative in reusuriting while opinions must be kept separate. The editorial page was where students could voice their views. Freedom of expression is vital. If students realize they have what Pamela Silverman called a right and an obligation to responsibly question the world around them, they will be more aware as adults. Gary Brendel took a stand in readressing the inequity in student elections. Gary’s view point article offered a viable solution to the problem, as a responsible viewpoint should. Without student speculation in the news section, objections to to the parting procedure were heard through the editorial opinion page. Jason Zervoudates anger over what he felt was an unfair decision was widely applauded by the student body. The Buccaneer staff wanted students to enjoy reading the paper, as well Liz Thompson worked hard to tell the feature pages with stimulating articles. An interview with parking lot attendent Jack Molinas, alias pops revealed his adventures and the student in the spotlight was a favorite feature. Sport teams play a significant role in high school community. Sport Editor Tina Siegel and Scott Lucas assigned articles, giving each team recognition. Many students learned of the rifle teams existance from the Buc. Scott, an athlete himself, covered many events including the Sprig Gardner Tournament. Tina interviewed student athletes for the Athlete in the lead, column. Photos and artwork are needed to create an aesthetic quality that makes the paper pleasing to the eye. Photography editor, Todd Gottesman developed all the pictures himself. Using his expertize Todd reduced and enlarged photos. He was also able to convert a horizontal shot to fit vertically. Dan Rabinouitz, Alyssa Engelson and John De Somone were always on hand ready to sketch. Although the Buccaneer was fortunate to get an increase in its budget, more money was needed. Managine Editor Victoria Vecehione solicted ads from community merchants. Ads from Planned Parenthood, and Birthrights made their debut this year. Pam and Vicki dedicated to run ads to raise funds, furthermore with statistics, concerning pregnancy, yelling so loudly, the girls could not feign deafness. Initaliy Adviser Jack Rice had questions about the propiecy of these ads. He, as usual, allowed the students to make the decision. Mr. Rice was a superb adviser. His moral support was always appreciated and his enthusiasm infectious. He could always be depended on to offer advice, or a warm word of encouragement. His criticisms were always constructive as he helped students improve their writing abilities. Although Mr. Rice may have disagreed with an editors opinion or an article, he was not a censorer as many high school advisors become. Instead Mr. Rice offered guidance sharing his wisdom to educate his staff. Then he allowed the students the space to learn and grow. Mr. Rice understands and respects students First amendments rights, and his love and devotion to the student newspapers has grown and not faltered. Did the Buccaneer accomplish what a high school paper should? Seeing the student body quietly reading the paper then commenting on its contents did indicate that the hours of writing, editing, and playing with layouts, a giant jig saw puzzle, payed off, indeed. Looking back on the year Mr. Rice concluded, The established principals of journalism were alive and thriving this year, at the Buccaneer due to the care and guidance of Editor-in-Chief Pam Silverman and the advisers labors and of the rest of our very gifted editors and staff members. I am proud of each and every worker!!” im By Pamela Silverman Seated: Pamela Silverman, editor-in-chief and Victoria Vecchione. Managine editor. Although we shrunk in size we grew in sound. Our marching band kept the crowds in their seats for the superb halftime show put on at each of the football games. The marching percision was quite evident at the Homecoming parade. We had a special jazz quartet perform for our superintendant, Mark Bernsteins, welcoming reception. The band held a Thanksgiving pool drive and collected over nine boxes of cans which were given out to needy families in our community. We had a team in the trivia challenge that brought in one of the top amounts of money for Cerebral Palsy. The jolly Rogers band is back. What a performance! A professional recording was made at Five Towns College and they also participated in a competition which involved jazz bands from all over the Metropolitan Area. Rain didn't stop the people from coming to see the wind ensemble and band perform at the Winter Concert. What a feeling it was to perform. The audience was impressed. The reception that followed was enjoyed by everyone and the visit from Santa Claus was a thrill for all. It took a lot of hard work and time to allow it to happen. There, if you come in, you're welcomed and asked a special favor. This favor is to make the graduating class of Mepham the best that it possibly can be. You won't be alone though. Your peers will be thinking just as hard as you. for ideas and activities which make their class stand high above the rest. That is what our class, the class of 1987, has achieved. Never a Saturday went by that hot chocolate and goodies couldn't be bought at a football game. We knew that Mepham's spirit wouldn't stop in the cold and neither did we. But, while it was so cold we often spoke about the spring and our prom, which we looked forward to. And so, in September, our minds began to think of fund raising activities. We sold Mepham jackets and we had a magazine sale. We planned a sports night for the spring. The Senior Class doesn't only think about ourselves, we help others. A bunch of senior classers” went to the Downs Syndrome School dressed as elves during the holiday season and gave gifts to less fortunate people than ourselves. We have tried to unite our class. I think we've come one step closer. Throughout the year we have listened, learned, and most of all contributed to Mepham High School — the way that only an outstanding Senior Class can — the Senior Class of 1987.
