BEHIND THE LINES Look! Just look around you! Everything you see is created of lines. As you follow this line of thought, you can find lines you didn’t even know existed. Some of “Mepham’s Most Famous Lines” include: — the lines in the attendance office. They seemed to go beyond one’s line of sight and took just as long to process. — the line crossed at the end of the 50 yard dash, the 600 and the 1.5 mile. The Physical Fitness Test seemed to be never ending from year to year. From the Kickline to the cafeteria lines, from the football line to the printed lines of “The Buccaneer”, and from the lines on looseleaf paper to the two lines formed for the Graduation Day’s Processional, the versatility of the shortest distance is evident. Approximately 150 music and art students and eleven chaperones experienced customs and ticket lines (as well as delays) on their venture to Belgium. In addition, “A Chorus Line” became the longest running show on Broadway during the same year when numerous fans stood on lines to obtain entry to “The Who’s Final Farewell Tour.” These ever present lines tie the school together. They represent only a segment of what went on behind the lines in the Class of 1984. Trgjasure Chest ’84 ' WiHington C. Mepham Hi A School Camp Avenue Befmore, N. Opening 15 16 Opening This section is dedicated to the teaching staff of Mepham who has shaped our minds, strived to help us gain a firm footing in our futures, and those who have put in more than an eight period day. They have shared with us their experiences and knowledge, in order to aid us in our growth. We thank them. 18 Divider — Dedication The Class of 1984 is honored to dedicate its yearbook to Mr. Paul Limmer. He has shown his versatility, both as a teacher and friend over the years. Most of the students at Mepham know Mr. Limmer as an Earth Science teacher who spends most of his free time coaching the track teams. Coach Limmer’s interest in sports peaked well before he arrived at Mepham. He was an outstanding athlete at Elmont Memorial High School where he pitched two no hitters as a senior baseball player. He went on to study at SUNY at Cortland and then received his Masters Degree from Hofstra University. In 1963, he came to teach at Mepham. He has been assistant coach of our football team, but is better known for coaching our track teams to many victories over the years. Coach Limmer spends just about every weekend of the school year with the team over and above what is required. He has helped many students receive athletic scholarships to such colleges as Bucknell, St. John’s and University of Pennsylvania. It is his dedication to the students of Mepham, both in and out of the classroom, that adds to the pride in our school. For all the time and effort he has put in beyond the call of duty, we would like to say “Thank you.” 20 Dedication Dedication 21 Mr. Rutlcy, our principal at Mepham High School came to Mepham in 1980 after teaching mathematics for nine years. He attended Brooklyn Tech High School and then SUNY at Albany. After a short stay in the Army, he went to teach at John F. Kennedy High School. The class of 1984, as Mr. Rutley states, is a very active group on the whole. Many students are involved in several activities which is very important to enhance the school spirit. Always remember, “anything you can imagine yourself accomplishing is worth the effort.” MR. K. RUTLEY PRINCIPAL 22 Faculty mr. a. McQuillan ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL DR. H. This year our school is losing three very good teachers. Mr. Alex Greenblatt, Mrs. Rosella Siskind, and Mr. Edmund Berridge, are all retiring after over 15 years of service. Mr. Greenblatt has been teaching at Mepham since 1959. His plans after retirement include traveling up to Alaska, Mexico and the Southwest. He is planning to do some writing in chemistry and computer programs. When Mr. Greenblatt was asked why he was retiring, he said, “It’s time for another season.” Mr. Berridge has been at Mepham for 29 years including his four years as a student. He has taught Accounting, Typing, Business Law, and Computers. He was the Senior and Junior Class Advisor and he also started the Interact Club. He plans on traveling to England and Greece after retiring. Mrs. Siskind has taught math at Mepham for almost 18 years. She is planning on traveling around the world with her husband after her retirement. We, at Mepham High School, will remember these teachers, not only as great teachers, but also as sincere friends. Faculty 35 36 Divider A club for every taste can be found within the walls of Mepham High School. These clubs promote creativity, learning, and service for the community, as well as the student body. These clubs have been as successful as the time and effort the advisors, officers, and members have put into them. The Band performs several times a year during pre-game and half time exhibitions at many home football games. The Band also participates in The Memorial Day and Islander Victory Parades every year. All twenty-eight of us delighted in meeting first period every morning. We were involved in playing various works by Mozart, Beethoven, Vivaldi and Sanmartini. These were presented in our Winter, Spring and Fine Arts Concerts. In addition, our budget enabled us to be the proud recipients of new uniforms. The jacket is maroon, displaying a gold G clef with an M, intermingled with it on the pocket. The gray pants, along with the coordinating tie makes the orchestra look as if they’re “dressed to play.’’ Also, this year, our exchange trip took place down south in Wilmington, North Carolina with the Haggrod High School Band and Orchestra. In order to defray the cost of the trip, we sold McDonald’s food tickets, had an annual raffle drawing and a movie night. This involved hours of planning, brainwork and participation throughout the school. Finally, being a member of Mepham’s 1983-1984 Orchestra is very special. The people helped and worked with one another to form a proud and memorable year. Advisor: Mr. Cuchel 42 Clubs This year’s Student Government, under the leadership of Mr. Rick Cuchel, started off with many good ideas for the year’s projects. We began by having a spirit week: Monday — Hat Day, Tuesday — Color Day, Wednesday — Clash Day, Thursday — Hawaiian Day, and Friday — Spirit Day. We also sponsored a Homecoming Dance on October 28. The Annual Homecoming Parade turned out to be a complete success. The reason for spirit week was to get the teachers and students involved in school activities, and accomplished its purpose. During the Christmas holiday, the Student Government sponsored a Christmas party for underprivileged children in our local orphanages. Some of our student body dressed up as Christmas characters and presented the youngsters with toys and games. To maintain our crosstown rivalry with Calhoun, our teachers challenged Calhoun’s teachers to an interschool volleyball game. This proved to be a very exciting event. Mepham High School’s Student Government brought the theme of love into our annual carnation sale and our first Valentine Dance. Also, during the holiday season, the members of the Senior Class were involved in Operation Goodwill for the association of children with Down’s Syndrome. With President Michael Fegan dressed as Santa and the other members dressed as elves, the Senior Class helped to bring the holiday spirit to the children. Our large staff works well together and each month the editors work hard to come up with interesting articles. As the date for final layout approaches everyone works under the pressure associated with deadlines. In spite of the zaniness and craziness of layout sessions, agonizing screams could often be heard by a casual observer emitted from a crazed editor who has just been told to fit in another article on a page on which everything once fit perfectly. Our layout sessions were often an example of primal scream therapy at its best! Despite all of our fun, the task of improving the paper was one we took seriously. The information the staff gained at the Journalism conferences was overwhelming. Tips on aspects of writing were passed on to our writing staff who in turn wrote excellent articles and presented regular features such as Athlete of the Month and teacher and student interviews. Naturally, every large club has its differences as we have had, but I am sure that the newspaper has helped us to learn responsibilities, as well as, how to work along with each other. Different as we may have been, we’ve always been concurrent on one issue: producing a terrific paper! Clubs 47 Le Z Cercle I Francais Top row: Alex Saponar. Edwin Lee. Sharon Saueracker was the Secretary and Alyse Goldsmith was the Treasurer. Mrs. Siegelaub, the faculty advisor, did an excellent job organizing many successful trips. The Manet exhibit and the trip to the French Restaurant were exciting and fun. Throughout the trip Mrs. Siegelaub explained some of the background regarding the exhibit. Even though she was nervous about letting us out of her sight in the city, we still had a fabulous time. Our next event of the year was our annual volleyball tournament with the German Club. They are responsible for adding a little spice to the school. The members painted murals for the corridors, planted and refurbished existing sculpture, and planned and created additional large-scale sculpture. The Nurse’s Office and the Athletic Office windows were also painted by the members of the club. Throughout the year, the club traveled to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Hayden Planetarium, and the Whitney and Gugenheim Museums. There were many technique oriented activities conducted during the meetings such as caligraphy instruction, life drawings from live models, and Air Brush technique instruction. When I’m off from school or work, I swim, windsurf, meet my friends or go to Gothenburg. Sweden is not only snow, mountains, skiing, forests, meatballs, and blondes which many think. The elementary school is 9 years — English is required from third grade on. After the elementary school you can go to the “Gymnasium” which most students do. There you choose a “line” that includes subjects instead of choosing them. I’m on the Humanistic line, which mainly includes languages and literature. When I go back to Sweden I have 2 years of school left — ugh. There are some things that I find different at Mepham from what I’m used to. Here you are with new students each period. In Sweden, you have most of your classes with one class, because everyone took the same line. We don’t have homeroom, pledge, or flags in the classrooms. When we have a period off we can go anywhere, even in the hall. We don’t have to “sign” in somewhere. If we cut, that’s our responsibility and when a teacher is absent there is usualiy a substitute. I find that the relationship between the students and the teachers is much better here. The school days are longer in Sweden, so we have longer vacations. In Sweden, we don’t have any activities after school. When school is over, it’s empty. Americans make school more fun. We don’t have kickline, cheerleaders, homecoming parades, football games, or the clubs after school. I want you to know that so far my time here in America has been GREAT. This will be an experience I will never forget. It will be so hard to go back to Sweden again and adjust. I’ve had such a good time with my friends; I’m really going to miss them. Mepham entered the 1984 soccer season with high hopes — they were coming off an 8-7 season and were returning more than half of the starting team. Although their expectations were never fulfilled, the Pirates had a successful season in many ways. Center forward Tommy Togneri scored 5 goals in the first 4 games and the defense, led by John McArdle and Steve Molinelli, was strong all season; however, victories were just not meant to be. For most of us, when it comes time to flip our wall calendars to the month of March, we are preparing for the culmination of a brutal winter season. After a victory on their home court, Mepham was forced to face Uniondale for the third time during the year. A close 4-3 victory gave Mepham its first county title. Captain April Warner, Angela Morales, Patty Raftery, and Michelle Hadlow, along with twelve others, were superbly coached by Mr. Peters. We worked hard and thought strongly of our motives. We never let down when losing or let up when winning. We swam in meets with fluctuating scores, and meets which were blowouts. But that never changed our attitudes, it just made us more intense. Each of us had a best event which we swam in every meet (different strokes for different folks). April was our 100 yard backstroker, Angela swam 100 yard breaststroke, Patty was our star 500 yard freestyler, and Michelle swam in the last freestyle relay. We swam up to three events each, and Patty frequently totalled 28 laps in a single swim meet. Our 200 yard medly relay, in which Angela swam a 50 yard breaststroke, and April anchored with a 50 yard freestyle spring, helped us to get ahead in the meets, being that it was the first event. We stymied our opponents through the first half of the season, then we were beaten three times. The relay loses told us to work harder. Sports 127 Slam Dunk The 1983-84 Mepham Pirate Basketball team fought hard all season long, and despite frequently coming up short, was able to stay in many games against teams of great ability. The season began with a 42-41 victory over West Hempstead. Ten consecutive hard losses then followed, including two 1-point losses and a loss to eventual Long Island champion Long Beach, despite a 14-2 first quarter lead. The team stayed together, however, to win two conference games — both over Oceanside. Frank Marinello led the team in scoring and rebounds, while Captain Michael Francese was the quarterback on the floor. Both contributed many key baskets in the close games. Forward Jordan Katz provided enthusiasm and aggressive play. Mike Stefanelli, a season long starter at forward, played well and should lead the team next season. Senior Rich Steigman came off the bench to lift the Pirates to their victory at Oceanside and started for the remainder of the season. Three year player Matt Abelson, senior Howie Freeman, and juniors Steve Molinelli, Andy Rather, Dave Brendel, Joe Masucci along with sophomore Dennis Hood helped keep the team together and loose throughout the season. When practice started in late November, the 1983-84 girls, basketball team knew they faced a challenging season. With only three returning varsity players and a new coach, Mr. Goldman, there were many offenses and defenses to be learned before league games began. Led by seniors Sue Seufert, Virginia Tramontana, Diane Cardillo, Terry Brown, Ellen Delargy, and Liz Gangi, the team practiced every day, always giving 100% and having fun. Their hard work paid off as the team boasted a mid-season record of 4-2. The team’s persistence carried through the second half of the season, including a very exciting and well-played first half against League Champions, Freeport. Mepham went on to finish with a record of 7-5. Two of those losses were in hard-fought games against Lawrence, which were lost by a total of 3 points. The team qualified for the play-offs and in the opening round was matched with Plainedge, the top seeded team in the County. The experience of Plainedge showed us they took advantage of every opportunity and defeated the hustling Mepham players. The elimination from the play-offs did not over-shadow the memories of a very successful and fun-filled season. The team owes many thanks to Mr. Goldman for his work in getting us ready for the season and into the play-offs, and to Mr. McManus for his support and fill-in coaching. She began competing for Mepham High School as an eighth grader and took the running field by storm. By the end of her first cross country season that year, she captured the county title. Since then she has won numerous County and State competitions in both cross-:ountry and track n field. Extreme dedication and hard work has helped her overcome constant pressure, and impending injuries. However, the rewards include winning two National Championships. During her five year career at Mepham, hardly a week went by without an article about her in Newsday. The Times, or a national magazine. The girls’ team was named one of America’s 25 best teams (All-American) for the 3rd year in a row as they won the County Championship and finished 3rd in NYS, even without America’s top female runner, Chris Curtin, who spent the latter part of the season on the sidelines with an injury. The girls’ team continued undefeated, emerging 13-0 — they have never lost. Mepham’s boys once again astounded the critics with a 5th place finish in the N.Y. State meet, as they proved to be Long Island’s top team once again. The boys’ team was also undefeated, 14-0, as they ran their undefeated streak to 49 in a row and went to the States for the 9th time in 11 years — the best record in N.Y.S. Strong leadership by Chris Curtin, Debbie Cuttitta, Chris Mahon, Rodger King and Jeff Nicosia hopefully has planted the seeds once again in Mepham’s younger runners to bloom next year, as Mepham will continue the tradition of turning out top flight distance running teams. This unexpected happening was a victory — yes, the Pirates won their last home game, 64-59 over Oceanside. The fans were out in full force. A group even showed up with bags over their heads with the saying Mepham who? written on them. These people, along with the cheerleaders, kickline, and many other loyal fans, discovered that winning was actually more fun than losing and the Pirate fans, however unique they may be, found a common way to celebrate — they threw a party! In both December 1983 and January 1984, the Varsity Cheerleaders won first place at the Competition held at U.S.A. skating rink. It was extremely exciting for the whole school. Fortunately, many people got “pscyhed” and came to spectate the event. The competition in December was the preliminaries, while the one in January was the finals. The Cheerleaders experienced a great disappointment near the end of the football season. This was of course, the tragic loss of their well known 4 level mount, due to a state and school district ruling against it. However, the cheerleaders overcame the frustrations and came up with other new and exciting movements. The cheerleaders hoped to get more involved with the teams this year, and along with the kickline, did such things as decorate the locker rooms for various football and basketball games and before the homecoming football game, decorated each player’s house during the night. Overall, it was an exciting year for the cheerleaders and through thick and thin, supported the teams without losing school spirit. During a practice. She was the lady with the umbrella receiving all the stares. Trip to Belgium: Take Two. Surrounded by 20 inches of snow that postponed the over seas trip for three days, Diane Cardillo posed with her luggage before the second try. It was February 11th, the Friday afternoon that 150 members of the band, orchestra, twirlers and art, plus 11 chaperones, had worked for and looked forward to all year. After extensive fund raising, including car washes, raffles, a skating party and candy bar sales, the day we had all been waiting for finally had arrived. Unfortunately, so had the snow. At around 4:30, all the students and chaperones — that is with the exception of Mr. and Mrs. Salvani — boarded the buses while the “Blizzard of ’83” intensified. While waiting for the Salvani’s to arrive, we received word that all flights from Kennedy Airport were cancelled. It was a disappointed group that unloaded the buses into the gym, formed a quick phone chain and slowly made its way home through the 20 inches of snow, to await word of a rescheduled flight. All weekend, while N.Y. shoveled out after the biggest snowfall of the year, airlines were called in search of a flight for our large group while everyone patiently sat by the phone hoping for good news. Finally it came — the flight on Sabena Airlines was to leave at 8:00 on Monday night. Once again, the group met in the parking circle and loaded the buses. This time, all went well and the eventful overseas trip had begun. Following an eight hour flight (we arrived at 9 AM Tuesday morning — Belgium time), a tired but eager group stepped off the plane. After claiming suitcases, the host families were introduced to their American guests and one by one left to begin the week long adventure. It was evident from the start that things were different overseas and many adjustments were needed. Groups of one, two or three were scattered throughout the Brussels area to contend with different currency, language, and customs. Communication at times was a problem; the English spoken there did not include our everyday slang expressions. Expressing what we meant was sometimes difficult but also provided some fun-filled moments. New York invades Belgium. Here a group poses on an Antwerp statue Between songs, Ron Cruz poses behind the tym-while waiting for the buses. pani drums. While in Amsterdam, the group was able to go through the famous house where Anne Frank and her family hid during WW II. 174 Activities Buses provided the transportation between our various stops. Steve Marzigliano and Mr Rockwin show how they feel about the touring in Belgium. The trip was not all sightseeing. The band, orchestra and twirlers performed twice during the trip. Here the band played at the University of Brussels. How much was a Belgian Franc worth anyway? For a week we learned to do some quick calculating to figure out how much we were really spending. It took a while to get used to spending what looked like colorful play money. After a day with our host families, the entire group met to begin touring together. During the week, Mepham invaded the Belgium cities of Ghent, Brugge, Antwerp, Turnhout, Waterloo, and Brussels. These were quite different from American cities in size, space, crowds, and cleanliness, and had much to see including many Belgian specialties. The Castle of the Counts and beautiful architecture of Ghent were followed by the quaint streets and canals of Brugge. Beguinage was the highlight of the day where lace was made by hand and sold in small shops. The next stop was Antwerp. Walking through the city, we toured the Royal Gallery of Fine Arts and the World Diamond Center among other points of interest. After the day there, we were on to Turnhout for a dinner, sponsored by Pepsi, and our first concert. The performance included combined pieces with various groups from the area, and was broadcast on national radio. Waterloo and Brussels were our destinations for the next day. In Waterloo, the sight of Napoleon’s defeat, the touring included a panorama building and a visit to the monument atop a long set of stairs. We then proceeded on to Brussels, the capital city of Belgium. Far Left: Boarding the bus to move on to the next city, Ellen Delargy smiles for the camera. Rich Bums and Wendy Rabekoff wait for the flight home after an exciting 7-day stay m Belgium The center of Brussels, The Grand Place, is a square of gold-encrusted buildings which represented the architectural beauty of the 17th century buildings throughout the city. The streets leading out and around the square were filled with small cafes and souvenir shops. Brussels proved to be the busiest of all the cities with many places to shop for memoirs, lace, and chocolate, and statues or monuments to see, including Manneken pis — a tourist favorite. The day was finished with a performance at the University of Brussels for our Belgium hosts. Our last day of sightseeing was spent in Amsterdam, Holland. This one day side trip included visits to the Rijks and Van Gogh Museum, Rembrandt House, and Anne Frank’s House. We then went to eat (?) an Indonesian Dinner featuring a horsemeat and a sharkmeat dish. Fortunately, there was a McDonald’s in Amsterdam! Although much of our time was filled with sightseeing, many of our nights and two days were spent getting to know our host families. It was during this time that we really saw the Belgium customs and way of life. For a week, we had adopted a new family which showed us many good times and fed us local specialties. Many friendships were made along with lasting memories of people who helped to make our trip something special. Peter Schmalenberger, Wendy Rabekoff and Rob Botone wait in the airport in Brussels for the plane to leave. Of course, we all came home with souvenirs, but these only represented the many things we encountered over there. After all, who could forget all the good food we were introduced to: frites from street-side stands, waterzooi, dami blanche, waffles with cream, and Leonidas chocolate. There were times we waited for people who had gotten lost while shopping or those we left behind one morning. There were also the customs to which we weren’t used to such as trolleys and no speed limit. Our week in a foreign country was an unforgettable experience. Thanks to our hosts from Belgium and all the hard work put in by Mr. Rockwin, school administration, and the chaperones, the trip was filled with great times. We all came home with lasting memories of our European trip and the fun we had while there. — Diane Cardillo Eight hours each way was spent up above the clouds on Sabena Airlines. Nearing the end of the long hike to the Waterloo monument are Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell Activities 177 Mianus Bridge Collapses June 1983 saw the occurrence of a terrible highway disaster. Three people died and three more were injured when a portion of an Interstate 95 bridge, crossing the Mianus River in Greenwich, Connecticut collapsed. Those who were killed or injured plunged 70 feet, in their vehicles, into the river. Side effects of the tragedy soon arose. The governments of New York and Connecticut feuded bitterly over the issue of which state should assume the burden of absorbing rerouted traffic. Similar bridges throughout the New York and Connecticut area were inspected in an effort to avoid a similar incident. The Mianus River Bridge was later rebuilt and reopened. The Year in Review United States Marines, in Lebanon since 1982, remained on their peacekeeping mission. In late October, disaster befell them when a suicide terrorist drove an explosives-laden truck into the Marine’s compound near Beirut, killing 239 soldiers and injuring many more. The same day, a similar attack killed 58 French soldiers in Beirut. The attacks caused the U.S. government to reevaluate America’s mission in Lebanon. Halfway around the world, the government of Grenada was toppled in a coup that killed leader Maurice Bishop. The United States immediately led an invasion of the island to prevent a Communist takeover of the nation and to protect Americans on the island. Ultimately, a democratic government was reestablished. U.S. troops continued to show their presence in Central America. Lech Walesa — Nobel Prize Winner The famed leader of the Solidarity Labor Movement, Lech Walesa, was named the winner of the 1983 Nobel Peace Prize. This honor, however, had a shadow cast over it. The Polish government instilled fears in Walesa that if he left Poland to accept the prize, he may never be permitted to return. Instead, Walesa’s wife and son made the trip to Aslo to accept the award on his behalf. In a speech written by Walesa and read by his wife at the award ceremony, Walesa made a sincere appeal to the government of Poland to allow labor to work in conjunction with the government, in order to solve Poland’s economic problem. Cabbage Patch Doll Craze The most popular toy in the United States, especially during the 1983 Christmas season, had to be the Cabbage Patch Doll. What originally appeared to be nothing more than a rag doll, turned out to be extremely popular among people of all ages. The Cabbage Patch Doll, each with its own name and adoption papers, became a type of status symbol. Merchants were able to command unusually high prices, yet they never seemed to have enough dolls. Prices as high as $25.00 were being received for this doll, yet that did not stop the consumers from buying them. Stories of people paying huge sums of money and traveling long distances to obtain the privilege of owning a Cabbage Patch Doll were not uncommon. Indeed Cabbage Patch Dolls have become loved members of families everywhere. Pine Tar Debate Professional baseball reached a highly controversial obstacle during the 1983 season. In a game between the Kansas City Royals and the New York Yankees, George Brett hit a homerun, only to have it disallowed. According to the Yankees, the pine tar on Brett’s bat was applied in an illegal manner, and this claim was supported by the umpires working the game. Several protests were filed, and after much debate, the league ruled that the game in question was to be suspended at the point where Brett’s homerun was hit, and resumed on August 18. The Royals subsequently won the game, but the incident served to remind league officials of the need to clarify certain playing rules. Cardinal Cooke Is Mourned Terrence Cardinal Cooke, one of the most highly respected officials of the Roman Catholic Church, died on October 6, 1983 in New York City. The head of the Archdiocese of New York and United States Military vicar, Cooke died after suffering from leukemia for a number of years. Cardinal Cooke was loved by many because of his outspoken yet mild-mannered ways and his superior administrative abilities. He identified with many of his followers because he shared with them a similar background — immigrant parents, childhood spent partly in a New York tenement and a youth dominated by hard work and study. Respect for Cooke was not inherited. Instead he earned it from the nearly 2 million Catholics in his archdiocese. He will be greatly missed, by both Catholics and by people of every religion who knew him or knew of him. As President Ronald Reagan said, “All of America is saddened by the loss of Cardinal Cooke, a saintly man and a great spiritual leader.’ Space Travel During 1983, two milestones were reached in American space travel. On board a flight of the Space Shuttle Challenger was Sally Ride, the first woman to fly on a United States space mission. The 32-year old mission specialist, a native of Encino, California and a holder of a doctorate in astrophysics, instantly became a role model for those involved in the women’s rights movement. Two months later, Air Force Colonel Guion S. Bluford became the first Negro United States astronaut. He served as mission specialist when the Space Shuttle Challenger underwent its first nighttime launch. A native of Philadelphia and a holder of a doctorate in aerospace engineering, Colonel Bluford, along with Sally Ride, added to the diversity of those becoming involved in the space program. 178 Current Issues The End of M A S H M‘A S H, one of television’s longest running and most popular shows in history, aired its last episode in February of 1983. The highly successful comedy ran for over 10 years, more than 3 times the duration of the Korean War that it vividly portrayed. The final episode, a two-hour television movie, was seen by millions of viewers, and received the highest Nielsen viewer ratings ever, as people throughout the nation held parties to commemorate the occasion. Determined not to let the characters of M A S H fade into obscurity, a sequel television series was created, depicting the lives of several M A S H personalities after the Korean War. Though the series is out of production, it is certain to remain alive through reruns and in the memories of its fans for years to come. The Daij After . . . Nuclear War 1983 saw the airing of The Day After, a television movie designed to depict the effects of a nuclear war. The movie was seen by millions and drew the largest audience ever for a television movie. Its producers saw the film as a means of making the world aware of the terrifying consequences of a nuclear attack. However, the destruction shown was nothing according to the experts. The destruction in a real nuclear attack would be much worse. Despite the incredible amount of media attention given to the movie, politicians and pollsters maintained that it was not effective in changing public opinion regarding nuclear armament. However, it made a majority of its viewers consider the issue of nuclear weapons with an added degree of caution. The Year in Sports The major sporting events of 1983 began with Super Bowl XVII. Washington’s John Riggins gained 166 yards while leading the Redskins to a 27-17 victory over the Miami Dolphins. In the National Hockey League, the New York Islanders earned their fourth consecutive Stanley Cup by defeating Wayne Gretzky and the Edmonton Oilers, 4 games to none. This left the Islanders just one championship short of equaling the Montreal Canadian’s record of 5 consecutive Stanley Cups. Days later, the Philadelphia 76ers won the National Basketball Association Championship by beating the Los Angeles Lakers in 4 consecutive games. Finally, the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, 4 games to 1, to win the 1983 World Series. 747 Shot Down — Soviets Blamed As the summer of 1983 drew to a close, the world was startled by reports of a terrible disaster. A Korean Airlines 747, bound from New York to Seoul, was shot out of the sky over the sea of Japan on September 1. ALL 269 passengers and crew members perished, including Congressman Lawrence P. McDonald of Georgia. After many conflicting news accounts and a barrage of accusations, the Soviet Union reluctantly admitted responsibility, claiming that the aircraft had violated Soviet air space. Other Soviet reports claimed that the 747 was carrying sophisticated spy equipment, and that it was on a mission for the United States. Because all the flight recording equipment was never recovered, the world will never know the actual circumstance leading up to the disaster. The world may someday forget the tragedy, but for the families of the victims, the incident will live in infamy. Fake Hitler Diaries In March of 1983, reports surfaced from Germany that the private diaries of Adolph Hitler had been discovered. Stern Magazine, a German publication, published the diaries and had paid 3.7 million dollars to obtain them. After sensational media coverage and testimony by experts regarding the validity of the diaries authenticity, it was discovered after 2 months that the diaries were forgeries. It seemed that the diaries were fabricated by Konrad Kujau, an expert dealer in Nazi memorabilia, and that a reporter for the magazine acted as the middleman, collecting the money that Stern paid for the works. Millions of people were disappointed, as the real contents of Hitler’s diaries continue to remain a mystery. Baby Jane Doe Controversy In 1983, a right to life case certain to yield landmark court decision surfaced. A baby born on Long Island and known only as Baby Jane Doe, triggered a heated debate between her parents and the United States government. Baby Jane was born with extremely severe birth defects including spina bifida, hydrocephaly, excess fluid on the brain, and an abnormally small head. Doctors advised her parents that with surgery, she would die by the age of 2. Her parents decided against surgery, but were taken to court by a right to life attorney. After various rulings and appeals a federal court of appeals denied access of the child’s records to the Justice Department. Final rulings may not be made for years. Throughout the ordeal. Baby Jane Doe has remained in a Long Island Hospital. Grucci Fireworks Explosion The members of the Grucci family have long been considered the premier manufacturers and displayers of fireworks in the country. Notable performances have included the Macy’s July 4th show and a display marking the 100th anniversary of the Brooklyn Bridge. Late in 1983, a powerful explosion rocked the Grucci factory in Bellport, Long Island. Two members of the family died, and 24 other employees were injured. More than 100 homes in the surrounding communities were either destroyed or damaged. Almost immediately, a controversy grew concerning the Grucci’s right to operate a fireworks factory in a residential area. Despite the tragedy, the family continued their schedule of spectacular fireworks presentations. Current Issues 179 Throughout the year, many parents, local merchants, and students have shown their support. Donations, boosters, and advertisements have helped to reduce the cost of the 1984 Treasure Chest. Their support and spirit is greatly appreciated. 180 Divider Tee — I don’t like u!! The Staff When we were first given the task of doing the yearbook, it seemed overwhelming. Over the summer, we participated in a Yearbook Conference at Amherst College in Massachusetts to learn how to put a yearbook together. It was there we were shown how to make our yearbook unique and represent our school. We hope we have achieved our goals of expressing the personality of the school, while including every aspect of the student body. We know that we could never forget watching the hands of the clock fly by, while fighting to beat our deadlines. Details that we thought would involve a half hour’s work, always seemed to take more time than we expected. Yet, in the end, ail the sweat and obstacles we had to overcome were worth it. We have to admit, we both had a lot of fun. We would like to thank the students, advisors and athletes who cooperated and helped us with the stories and names to make the clubs, sports and activities sections complete. But most of all, we owe a great deal to our advisor, Mr. Critelli, for his never-ending support, encouragement and dedication. He was always there to help us overcome problems and keep us going in the MANY frustrating moments. Cindy Horowitz and After seeing her ten millionth piece of quad paper, Cindy Horowitz can do a PrGStigiaCOmo layout in Olympic time. — Editors Above: A common sight in the editor’s households was a dining room full of year- Having to contend with Cindy’s layouts and her 3.000 year old typewriter in the wee hours of book materials, forcing their families to eat elsewhere. the morning, Lisa fights frustration. By having first hand knowledge of sports Terry, Ellen, and Diane did a superb job. 206 Activities Behind the Lines Editors in Chief: Lisa Prestigiacomo, Cindy Horowitz Advisor: Mr. Joseph Critelli Faculty Editors: Julie Estes, Nadine Tromberg Club Editors: ToniAnne Caponi, Michelle Cioffi Boys Sports Editor: Peter Toto Girls Sports Editors: Terry Brown, Diane Cardillo, Ellen Delargy Activities Editors: Kim Johnson, Diane Morgan Staff: Laurie Rooney — Photographer Cara Tuzzolino Lori Schain Elyssa Solomon Donna Zuckerman Howard Freeman Wendy Rabekoff (Consulting Editor) Wendy Kalman — Copy Editor Steven Lander — Newswriter Michelle Gulotta — Business Manager Left: Terry Brown racks her brain for a witty caption to a photo. Elyssa Solomon Activities 207 Our lives do not stop at the end of the processional line at graduation: indeed, at the commencement ceremony our life lines continue and begin to change directions. The curve into infinity invites life beyond distortion. During our years at Mepham we faced challenges, made friends and grew as individuals. Who knows whether our paths will cross down the line; but let us agree that our lives, beyond Orwell’s view, converge upward into hope. Table of Contents Opening 2 Faculty 18 Clubs 36 Seniors 62 Sports 102 Activities 150 Advertisements 180 BEHIND THE LINES Look! The Physical Fitness Test seemed to be never ending 'from year to year. They represent only a segment of what went on behind the lines in the Class of 1984. t
