The Mepham High School class of 1981 would like to dedicate this yearbook to Mr. George Mesologites. He is a man that many of you may not know, but that is because he lurks beneath the floors of Mepham High School in the art center. Mr. “M”, as we have come to call him, has worked with Mepham’s potential artists for over 20 years. He is not only a dedicated teacher and professional artist, he is a friend. Mr. “M” has made the art department a great success, but more important he transformed it into a home. You can be sure that by the end of your years at Mepham you will be calling Mr. “M”, dad. From all of us at Mepham we would like to extend our appreciation and warmest wishes to a man who has helped to shape many student’s futures. 18 19 Born To Run! Andre “The Superstar Taylor Captain of Winter and Spring Team This winter the girls on the track team worked together to become one of the best teams in Nassau County. Our successful season could not have been accomplished without the help, support and cooperation of the coaches nor the confidence among out team members. 2 Pat McArdle Captain of Winter Track Track is not as team oriented as cross-country, yet each person must do his or her job in the event he or she specializes in, or the team can’t function. Mr. Limmer is an amazing coach, but he can’t work miracles unless the kids are willing to believe in him and everything he asks of them. I, am looking forward to a successful season in track. This year’s team is full of hope and promise and I pray I can guide them to victory. 23 In The Long Run! The 1980 cross-country season was a dream seasor iced with a four year goal becoming a reality — winnin the N.Y. State Championships. The season was fille with toughness and dedication, tremendous team spir and closeness, lots of fun, and even a great deal of pub licity. Champs • Division Champs • Conference Champs • County Champs j « STATE CHAMPS j Coach Limmer was a large part of the team’s success, as he sacrificed many aspects of his social and family life in order to help us perform up to our highest abilities. 25 And They're Off ... We have always had a rough time trying to live up to the high standards expected from any Mepham Cross-Country team. It was a lot of hard work but the benefits were great. Lasting friendships were formed and memories created. We experienced tham all together and they will not be easily forgotten. Karen Hugh Girls X-C Captain. 26 Look Before You Crosse 27 B r . 28 Keep Our Guard Up. The Mepham H.S. Lacrosse Team experienced its finest record last year with a 9-6 record. Playing for the first time in a new league structure that takes into account records and talent, the lacrosse program seems headed for bigger and better things. As the new coach, Terry O’Connor, and the new assistant coach, Jay Lupetin, head into their second season, the team will be strengthened by a number of returning starters. Among these are Robert Travers, Steven Carey, Tom Monks, Mike Swift, Dennis Harvey, Darren Muller, Sam Kratchman and Glen Magrane. The 1982 season promises to be a rewarding and successful enterprise. THE RENNAISSANCE OF MEPHAM LACROSSE — 1981 The Mepham Lacrosse program moved into a new phase last season with its entrance into the Long Island Lacrosse League. Under the guidance of two new coaches, Terry O’Connor (Head) and Jay Lupetin (Assistant), the team achieved its best record in years, 9-6, and was the champion of the league’s South Shore division. Having graduated only two starting seniors, the varsity squad returns this season with great experience, and has its sight on the League championship. Returning starters include: Tom Monks, Robert Travers, Steven Carey, Glen Magrane, Mike Swift, Darren Muller, Sam Kratchman, Matt Bernstein and Dennis Harvey. Reaching Our Goals The Mepham Pirates saved face this year. Being in a tough division isn't easy. The team worked hard under the watchful eye of coach Goldman and improved its standing in the conference. Front: Scott Wasserman, Val Termotto. Joe Thomas. Missing: Douglas McAdams. 31 This year’s soccer team put in a fine performance under the supervision of coach Ken Hunte. The whole team worked hard and ended the season with a record of 8-3-1. 33 34 This season our team ended up with a record of 2-7. We had a very strong defense which kept the games close in score and suspenseful. Because most of the team consisted of tenth and eleventh graders, we have high hopes for the future. Lois LUcker, our goalie, had over 100 saves for the season and won the title of all-star. We all enjoyed working together and, in the process, we had a lot of fun. Lynda Nenninger. Splashing To Victory In their first season the Mepham-Kennedy Girls Underdog” Swim Team made an outstanding showing with a won-loss record of 8-2. At the County Championships the team came in third place. A new county record was set by Claire Licktenberger, Tillie Tifverman, Nina Kannatt, and Ellen Gottlieb, in their 200 Medley Relay. In addition to becoming the county champion in both the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events, Nina Kannatt had an undefeated dual meet season. Co-Captains Ellen Gottlieb and Nina Kannatt have been highly successful in their efforts to unify the two schools, and the whole team would like to express their gratitude to Coach Shea for his diligence and dedication throughout the season. Practices are long and hard, but the team shows great determination and spirit. R i g h t O u t 0 f L e f t F 1 e 1 d The 1980 softball team, coached by Mr. Martone, had a disappointing season, with a record of 3 wins and 9 losses. Although our record could have been better, we still had a good time while we played. This year, with many of the starters returning and many talented sophomores joining, we are expecting a very successful season. Geri Carillo 40 41 Getting Our Digs In! The volleyball team had another successful season this year, losing only two league games. Behind the superb coaching and guidance of Miss MacCoy and the fine leadership of cocaptains Gerianne Carillo and Laurie Lescoe, the team went to the quarter finals where we were defeated, after a valiant effort, by the North Shore team. We seem to be getting closer and closer every year to a championship title — maybe next year will be the year that the volleyball team takes it all... I wish the best of luck to Miss MacCoy and next year’s team. By giving of his time and energy, Mr. Wolfenstein made it possible for a girls tennis team to exist this year. Thank you. Although we had good players, I'm sure that the team is looking forward to a better season next year. Not Present: Stacy Mehlman — 2nd doubles. What a Racket This year’s squad had a compiled a big wins over and season. The boys record which included ________. Outstanding was the performances were turned in by all._ most improved player. All in all, the team would like to ________ all the people who showed up at its matches. 45 The Mighty True to one of the oldest traditions in the history of Mep-ham athletics, the 1980-81 wrestling team successfully completed its season with a dual meet record of 7 wins and 2 losses. Wrestling season, involving four months of the academic year, requires much strength and sacrifice from each individual on the team. The result is seen in the excellent team record. All who have shared in the pride of Mepham Wrestling will carry the feeling within them forever. 46 Supreme Court Whoever said that Mepham lacked spirit has never been to one of our basketball games. The combination of an excited, if not slightly rowdy, crowd and a first rate team make the games one of the “best buys” at school this year. The starting unit is comprised of Co-captains Ernie Jones and Steve Windwer, Artie Hood, Howie Carr, and Renie Ali-ston. With the exception of Renie, these guys have been together for 3 seasons. Team member John Gugel says, “The team is looking forward to an excellent season and a shot at the Nassau County Title. 48 Shooting The Breeze Get that jump ball! Catch that rebound! Score! Those are the shouts heard at every Mepham basketball game. Our Girl's Basketball Team has begun a powerful season and has maintained a triumphant record. The team is composed of sizzling newcomers, as well as split-second dribblers, who have returned for a second season. 50 51 On The Ball Mepham’s J.V. Basketball team, under the guidance ot Coach MacElroy, proved to be enthusiastic and hardworking. Practices were long and hard, and seemed to pay oil because some players were able to play all 4 quarters without rest. Most ot all, the team showed great spirit and determination. 52 Catching The Spirit It’s no secret that Mepham’s Cheerleading Squad is a great source of school pride. But before becoming Varsity Cheerleaders the girls go through “training” on the J.V. Squad. The 1980 J.V. Cheerleaders are close, organized and very professional. Keeping Our Minds Out Of The Gutter doesn’t mean that you can’t find the team having a lot of fun down at the alleys! 54 The rifle team this year had only three returning members from last season. The rest of the team was comprised of 7 sophomores and a junior. Considering that most of the team was so new to the sport, the fourth place finish with a 4 and 6 record was excellent. Our finest effort was against East Meadow in our tenth and final match when we broke the 1300 barrier and scored 1325. 55 The Girls Lacrosse Team had an extremely difficult season this past year. However, under the leadership of captains Lynda Nenninger and Ann Hodnett, the team pulled together and gave 100 %. Our coach, Miss Miller, gave a great deal of her time and energy in helping the team to improve. The upcoming season will again be difficult, however, the team is looking forward to the challenge. 56 Getting Our Kicks! The Mepham High School Kickline, led by co-Captains Lisa Kautz and Patti Savage, did a remarkable job in keeping Mepham’s spirit alive. Their hard work and dedication will always be remembered and greatly appreciated by their friends and fellow students. Cheers! 58 Varsity Cheerleading The Nassau County Cheerleading Competition proved once and for all what we at Mepham have always known to be true: the Mepham Varsity Cheerleaders, under co-Captains Carolyn Pearse and Christine Wind, are really 1. The squad’s fine spirit plus Miss Kush-ner’s unfaltering dedication make our cheerleaders precise, poised and very professional. 59 60 Although the choir didn’t have an exchange trip this year, many other exciting events helped to fill in the empty space. Along with the annual winter and spring concerts, which were very successful, we did numerous other concerts including those at other schools, as well as in the Merrick Senior Center and at St. Barnabas Church. We also went to a Broadway show, which proved to be a fulfilling experience for all those involved. In addition, we had many parties and get togethers throughout the year. There are many other exciting events planned for next year, so, if, you like to sing, come on down and give us a try! 61 62 The Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, Symphonic Band, and Twir-lers, hold many fine memories of their years at Mepham. Under the direction of Mr. Howard Kruger Rockwin, the music department members have traveled to Chicago, England, Salem, and South Bellmore. They have also participated in the Islander Victory parade, and an Arrow’s Soccer game. While the memories of these events remain implanted upon our minds, so do the memories of trying to forge Mr. Rockwin's signature, taking sixth period band rotations, and trying to sight read Marche Slave. Over the past three years, most of the members have become close friends, and have experienced things that only music members of Mepham could understand. 63 Go For It! Political Forum, the Model Congress and Debate Society had another outstanding year. The school’s largest organization held its largest Model Congress to date on the weekend of February 27, 28, March 1. The “Congress” which was attended by over two hundred students was highlighted by a keynote address by Congressman Thomas J. Downey. The more than seventy Political Forumites commonly known as PF’ers, experienced weekly meetings every Tuesday. The officers are Andrew Bendersky, Lloyd Rothenberg, Gary Felsburg and Darlene Fairman. The government does not only discuss serious topics, such as vandalism and budgets. Some of the activities are the election of officers, the G.O. card sale, and the big favorite, the Valentine’s Day Carnation Sale. 67 Leader's Of The Pack The purpose of the Senior Class Organization is to make senior year an enjoyable experience for everyone. Our primary objectives are to make Prom a night to remember and to raise money to cut the cost of Prom tickets. We have accomplished this through a magazine sale, a jacket sale and refreshment sales at football games. We do, however, sponsor several non-profit activities such as Operation Goodwill and Senior movie. We are presently planning a dance marathon to aid the Muscular Dystrophy foundation. We have been successful in all of our endeavors thanks to loyal officers and active members. The word that best describes the Class of ’81 is “unpredictable” because we are not like any other Mepham graduating class. There seems to be a spirit among our seniors which gives us the power to do anything. Brian Benjamin, Cheryl Riley, Christine Wind Advisor: Mrs. Riefberg 69 Junior Class The Junior Class had its hands full this year with class rings, PSAT’s, Regents in June, and lots of fundraising activities. A dance is in the works for sometime in May. Sophomore Class The Sophomore Class, under the direction of Mr. Cuchel, held elections for class officers in September. Once chosen, the leaders of the Class of ’83 started out their first year in high school with great ideas and hope for the future. A Hard Act To Follow No one will ever forget the Drama Club productions of the past 3 years. In 1979 George Nider and the cast of ‘‘Reunion” not only presented a fine musical but created a spirit that is still a part of the club today. Last year’s musical “Stagestruck” proved to be even more successful. This year, under the direction Pat Bloodgood, the club turned to a more dramatic script, The Bad Seed.” Again, the production was first rate. They're Playing Our Song! You can hear it early in the morning and well into the afternoon. If you listen closely you can even hear it during lunch. It’s the sound of WMEP — Mepham’s own radio station. The station is run by Laura Rosenfeld, Jodi Pushkin, Adam Schulman, John Gugel, Steve Mahn, and Kenny Fulip. The faculty advisor is Mr. Nowicki. WMEP is a big favorite at Mepham this year. WLIR — Watch out! 73 It All Adds Up! Math Team Math Meets are very exciting because the problems are always challenging, and rewarding. Scoring heavily for the team this season are members Noah Polak, Steven Dubs, Marc Rudoltz, Andy Bendersky, Nick Socci, and Donald Yee. Thanks to Mr. Cohen for his guidance. 74 Thanks For The Memory How often have you heard someone say, “The future lies in computers?”. Mr. Mitchell’s computer club is an extracurricular activity designed to give everyone an opportunity to come in contact with a computer. The group has learned to solve many practical problems and to have a lot of fun too! 75 The foreign languages taught in the classroom go much deeper than vocabulary and grammar. The cultural aspects of French, Italian, Spanish and German come alive at the language club meetings each week. Group trips, activities and fund raising are the major concerns of each club. This year the French club visited The Cloistres and the Italian club did a spectacular job raising money for the Italian earthquake victims. 77 Just For Reference Are you still trying to figure out how to use a card catalog? Does the Reader’s Guide make you break out in a cold sweat? Is the library one of the rooms you haven’t gotten to see yet? Well, believe it or not, someone in Mepham can answer no to all of these questions — the members of the Library Club! The club is responsible for shelving books, collecting fines, and keeping things in order. Their work is strictly voluntary but the club is indispensable! 78 Get Into The Act Interact is an organization whose members are solely interested in serving the community. Under the guidance of Mr. Bimbie, the group discusses the problems of the area and tries to find solutions. Through Interact, Mepham students can be active, concerned citizens. 79 Dweppies The District Wide Enrichment Program is proof that education can be a lot of fun. DWEP not only presents classic films such as “Romeo and Juliet and “A Tale of Two Cities” but it also gives guest speakers the opportunity to formally address large groups of students. DWEP is a “household word” at Mepham because it offers something for just about everyone! 80 81 Getting It All Together 82 I Making a lasting contribution to W. C. Mepham High School is ery important to all the members of the 1981 Yearbook Staff, 50 we worked long and hard to make the “Treasure Chest” an original, creative publication for everyone to enjoy and literally :reasure. We are proud to say that we received an abundance of help from the administration, student body, and community, he best way to thank you for all your support is to dedicate his book to everyone who helped us through our long, yet mjoyable, struggle to that final deadline. Alumni Association is living proof that school pride is a feeling that remains with a student long after graduation. The Association is dedicated to improving and supporting school activities whenever possible in addition to promoting involvement and togetherness. Homecoming Day and the Alumni Concert have become annual events that will remain an important part of every school year. 86 The Name.. Rutley The early forecasts of 1981 appear to indicate a tightening of the economy during the next decade. Such a prediction, if valid, will result in stronger competition for jobs with an emphasis on technical skills. These indicators have not been lost on the student population. Already we have read surveys which show that job opportunity is now the primary reason for further education. I strongly advise all of you to continue your education in one form or another. Remember, there are many alternatives to college, such as business or technical schools, correspondence courses, adult education, or just personal reading. She is always present to one who needs her. Florence Murray was such a natural counselor even though her official role was Secretary to the Guidance Office. She established beautiful relationships with distressed parents, angry professionals, anxious or depressed students, harassed co-workers. None who came to her were rejected. Held on both February 13th and 14th, the themes “Friday the Thirteenth” and Valentines Day” were incorporated into several of the acts. Favorites included solo and group singers, dance acts, comedy skits, the Mepham twir-lers, Jolly Rogers Band, and, of course, the Mepham kickline. Credit is due to all who participated in planning the shows which were enjoyed by students and parents.
