VtepY axx S uUax £ o(ty dedication The Mepham High School class of 1980 would like to dedicate this yearbook to Mrs. Karen Gil for all she has done for the student body, and the activities in which she has been involved. When one thinks of Mrs. Gil, the first word that comes to mind (besides short) is ' dedication. Aside from teaching Italian on a daily basis. Mrs. Gil has been the faculty advisor for the Italian Club, Kickline, and Cheerleaders. It is easy to see that a sometimes burdensome after school schedule can be tedious, but with Mrs. Gil's eternal spirit and diligence, all the clubs with which she is affiliated have been successful and worthy. She remains after school for approximately two hours every day, planning for fund raisers, school functions, and competitive athletic activities. Mrs. Gil does not act solely as an authoritative figure, but as a colleague as well. She takes a deep, personal interest in all of her students and club members and is a kind, vivacious person doing anything possible to keep the students of Mepham High School together. Those who were encouraged and taught by Mrs. Gil would like to extend their thanks and warmest wishes to her. We hope that she has grown as much from us as we have from her. 19 ACTIVITIES 21 9NIIAI0031 M0H On Saturday. October 20. the Alumni Association sponsored Mepham's first annual homecoming day An uncommon atmosphere of spirit and enthusiasm invaded the school as students got ■ psyched'' for this special event The Association supplied students with Be there buttons in an attempt to publicize the game and reassure the football team that the kids were behind them Onlookers took to the sidewalks as the Mepham Band. Twirlers, Kickline, and Cheerleaders paraded from the Bellmore train station to the Mepham football field. They were accompanied by a pirate ship float and a motorcade of students' cars The stands were packed with alumni, local residents, and students who had come to see the Mepham-Sewan-haka game Some alumni came dressed in their old team uniforms, while others proudly bore varsity M s on their sweaters. At half time. Alumni Football Greats were introduced, and as always, the Mepham Pirate Kickline did their thing' Bringing school spirit and unity, the First Annual Homecoming Day was nothing short of a success! ITALIAN In keeping with the Romance Languages, the Italian Club brings a little bit of Italy to Mepham every Thursday afternoon. This year’s club, forty members strong, has kept busy with a lot of fun activities and community services. They had a picnic at Eisenhower Park, they went rollerskating, and they saw a demonstration on the preparation of Fettucini Alfredo. For Thanksgiving, members prepared a food chest for an Italian family here in Bellmore. Although Mrs. Gil was not with the group for a couple of months, the club was as active as ever. This has been quite a financially successful venture. We hosted an appreciation fete for the staff for their support during our fund raising campaign, as well as a wine” and cheese tasting party for us. We are fortunate to have the interest of our Alumni Association who is arranging to bring speakers from the Canadian and French embassies and foreign companies. Also in store for our group is a mid-April trip to Alliance Frangaise, and while we re in the city, we plan to dine in one of those charming French restaurants not found on Long Island. Rident stolidi verba Latina. — Ovid (Fools laugh at the Latin language.) Latin — not quite independent study — the students met as a class twice a week after school — but certainly authentic Latin: first declensions, ablatives, second conjugations, the works. And why? Perhaps just to learn or to improve vocabulary or to hear Mr McQuillan s latest intrigue. Mepham High School Alumni Association was founded in April, 1979. Its primary purposes are to promote social interaction among all alumni and to assist the school and current student body whenever and wherever possible. This is reinforced through the many programs the Association has initiated throughout the year. On October 20, they sponsored the first annual Homecoming Day at Mepham. The band, cheerleaders, kickline, twirlers, alumni, and floats paraded from Bellmore Station to the school. Be There buttons were worn by everyone as they cheered on their teams. Let My Soul Rise in Song, the first annual alumni choir concert, was a night that will be long remembered The concert reunited one-hundred fifty former choir voices from all over the country with their beloved director, H. W. Alderfer. The audience overflowed from the auditorium into the boys’ gym with alumni, local residents, and current students. The spotlight was on the Mepham gymnasium on January 26, when the 1955 Championship Mepham basketball players challenged the Professional Baseball Players Basketball Team. It was a close game, as the Mepham team proved they were still champions by defeating the All-Stars by one point. Without the dedication and genuine interest of Mr. Richard Wilgen-kamp, none of these events would have been as successful as they were. oi Band Captain Jo« DiFiglia Secretaries Bern Jonas Kathy Fogel Librarians Lynne Lisberg Linda Baillard Joanne PLAYING —TWIRLING Mamscalco Jennifer Charwatt Managers Glenn Fermande Lloyd Rothenberg Neil Garone Orchestra Officers Pres Sue Klein Treas Marc AIskJ Librarians Lisa Bonamo Cheryt Darrow a On a more serious note: The Mepham Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, and Orchestra, all under the direction of Mr Howard Rock-win. have worked feverishly to raise funds for their London Concert Tour. YEARBOOK In case you haven’t noticed, the theme of our Yearbook is individuality (expressed through shapes formed by lines, and therefore continuous). Anyway, through many long, hungry, and sometimes boring hours, we completed this book. With an extremely small staff consisting of a red head, a blond, a dogeyed student, a willful blue-eyed babe, with some help from an artist (that is bull artist), “smiley,” our pensive parka-ed person, and our journalist, we made a Yearbook. Believe us, it was difficult. If there are any complaints, join next year's staff. Everest, was asked by newspaper reporters why he did it. His answer came in four words. ‘ Because it is there!” What do these words mean? A disease is there; cure it. A wrong is there; right it A challenge is there; meet it. It is the response to challenge that is the core and mainspring of our existence And it is the response to challenge that reveals the individuality of people Individuality can be demonstrated in many ways as we meet the challenge in life. The late John F Kennedy, in his book, Profiles in Courage, writes about the individuality of elected officials. He writes about people who have taken positions, however unpopular. about matters affecting the nation and the world. According to Kennedy, it matters little what the position is. What matters most is that people have the courage to take a position, to stand by it, and to put their jobs on the line for it. And. yes — even to die for it! In school, you have had an opportunity to express your individuality. As a result of becoming involved in different facets of school life, you have been able to offer your own point of view and to understand your classmates’ points of view It is hoped that our school has permitted you to utilize your individual strengths to optimum advantage. It is hoped that our school has appreciated your individuality so that you can function better in society. In college or at work, you will have the opportunity to make your voice known and heard — and your presence felt. At home, I am quite certain that your individuality has been nourished — no matter how large a family you come from Indeed, wherever you go and whatever you do. there will be challenges for individual self-expression. Choosing a college, choosing a job and choosing a mate are some of the important areas in which you can flourish as an individual. Above all. we should remember Kennedy's belief that taking a position on all matters will enrich you as a person and help you grow. For it is by expressing your views on different subject that you truly become an entity unto yourself Let us all then try to climb the mountain. Let us all then meet the individual challenges of life. Let us all then have the courage of our convictions. For then and only then can the world be better for this that one man scorned and covered with scars still strove with his last ounce of courage to reach the unreachable stars” PHILIP EISMAN The early Greeks observed, “Nothing endures but change. As you are about to set forth on an adventure that commences in June, you will look forward with anticipation and apprehension to a new and different life But amidst the many exciting changes you will encounter. you may also find comfort from two sources First, the newness that you will be discovering is really part of a pattern of change that began long before the Greeks. There is this continuity in change; the newness you see can bind you to the past as well as free you from it. A second comfort lies in the fact that although we are part of a pattern begun many years ago, we are also unique individuals setting forth on distinct journeys. Each of us has been free and will be free to find and travel the best road to success. While remembering our ties to the past, it is also wise to heed Alfred Lord Tennyson who observed only a hundred years ago. For man is man and master of his fate. Kenneth A. Janie Panzeca 185 Leslie Gerhauser Little Cancer Unfortunately it’s those we want to impress the most, we impress the least. Once in reference to her companion and herself I quipped: He's beer and pretzels while you’re champagne and caviar. A slave to fashion, her appearance was a joy to the eye. Petite of stature, fair of skin, blond of hair and blue of eyes A more radiant girl there is not to be found. Although she was incapable of a relation, She gave many a boy a temporary elation. Her tumor was enthusiasm. Her malignancy is arrogance. As her innocence disappeared So did her friends, her peers. Her looks became average Her stature became short Her friends became enemies Boys, formerly puppies about her, became men without her Remember, when dealing with champagne and caviar, Champagne, a bubbly wine, may turn to vinegar and caviar is only fish eggs. 187 Jerry Kotlarz Waiting The impatient longing to be answered The patient awaiting the outcome Nerves are tense it becomes boring Waiting without knowing What will happen next The fright that leaving Might bring the end. Sharon Windwer After a while it gets so you can’t pass over the front lawn of any school without having just a thought of Mepham. You begin to think that front lawns spell Mepham and then you realize so do magazine sales, pep rallies, extended homerooms, and fire drills. One Friday, at the end of the year, there is a party, just seniors, and everyone is talking about this and that, and what they're going to do when they get out and where they’re going to go. One minute it quiets down and someone yells, I’ll hate to leave,” a rarity. There are lots of memories. While you're sitting among the cold pizza you try to think of all those special things you want to remember. All those things which began at orientation day when we were sophomores Do you remember... Dr. Goergen's retirement which was felt throughout the school. Pretty soon we weren't sophomores anymore. We've become juniors, beginning to feel important. We then had someone we could direct to the swimming pool. But then again we still didn’t have full authority over that sacred table in the hall by the West Cafeteria and the elevator. Do you remember... The anticipation we had of getting our class rings and having to choose between starburst or regular. Then the big day came. We were seniors at last. Of course the highlight was being able to give up math, science and social studies. Now we were too superior, with our cars, for the cafeterias. It was definitely MacDonald’s or a walk down to Peppe’s. Do you remember... “How many magazines have you sold? Did you get a mug or are you still working on a weeble? Off we go. We all feel the class of '81 breathing down our backs. We don’t want to keep them waiting so with a last hesitant backward glance, here we go ... Whoops! Watch those steps. Don’t want to trip on graduation day, you big cluck. For once, be graceful. So this is what a diploma looks like. Should I maybe wave to the audience or yell, Hiya, ma!
