TREASURE CHEST 1979 Wellington C. Mepham High School Bellmore, New York To everything there is a season 2 INTRODUCTION and the years we shared. . . INTRODUCTION 7 When we thought, 8 INTRODUCTION and a time and holding on to what we could. 14 INTRODUCTION STUDENTS pg. 130 18 DEDICATION Few people realize the amount of work necessary for and the difficulties encountered in the preparation of a yearbook. Robert Chalmers has seen us through frantic moments when we struggled to meet important deadlines. His students will always remember him for his patience, understanding and love for teaching. When he isn’t teaching or advising the yearbook, he spends his time coaching the successful rifle team. With heartfelt appreciation for all his advice and his years of devotion to teaching, we, the staff of the 1979 Treasure Chest, dedicate this yearbook to him. A Message to the Class of ’79 When put into its proper use, — the current phraseology of — tell it as it is, dictates that 1 say to you Seniors, — “Congratulations;” congratulations for an excellent job of self-government, self-restraint, and, of course, the well deserved acclaim. The entire class should feel a great sense of pride in their accomplishments this year, — and in their excellent leader- ship wnich helped “point the way.” These are all very posi- tive attributes and will have a direct influence on your futures. You have learned by doing (one of the best metnods of education); you now possess the background (past), the practice and process (present), and have learned how to approach and handle the coming problems (future). I neither wanted, nor planned it that way; — however, — oftentimes — “even the best laid plans of. . — and, cir- cumstances beyond our control” — helped set the stage for a sometimes “absentee” adviser. In spite of the difficulties cre- ated by this situation, — you (seniors) still carried forth, — and, with a lesser amount of guidance than was usual, you showed the spirit, the fortitude, and the ability to make this one of the better years at Mepham, and one of the best “sen- ior classes.” I thank you for your attention to me, and your considera- tion of me; I thank you for sharing your ideas with me; and finally, thank you for assimilating and learning so quickly that we all will always remember the superior role of the class of ’79. The very best of good fortune to you, one and all, from your adviser who was, and always will be, — Your friend, Martin Fleischer ACTIVITIES 91 YEARBOOK 92 ACTIVITIES Treasure Chest Staff Mr. KoIht! It is the time to reflect upon the people and the events that have helped shape vour thinking and your lives. nd it is also the time to look ahead. Now is the time to recognize the importance of a candid approach to a problem and of open discussion for its solution. the time to learn to manage your own money and to analyze how our educational leaders spend taxpayers’ money, the time to help implement our Federal Laws which give equal rights to women and to all minority groups, the time to do everything in our power to cope with crime in our schools and in our communities. the time to make democracy truly work by voting for and appointing honest public officials who can help make better lives for you and your families. the time to change from the philosophy that a person may do anything that he wishes at any time, to the philosophy that every person has reasonable rights but must lx? held responsible and accountable for his her actions. the time to return to the basic skills of learning so that education has greater substance and depth; so that you can be trained not only to think more clearly, but also to perform tasks more skillfully. the time to determine your career goals so that you will have future direction — whether you will go to work or to college. Now is the time to begin identifying life’s problems so that you can try to solve them, the time to learn from past mistakes in order to achieve future successes. the time to rise above changing events in a changing society in order to better satisfy your own individual needs, the time to use your innate abilities to the best advantage for yourself and for society. the time to place the good and the bad that has happened to you in proper perspective in order for you to become better human beings. This place I know right now was not made for me but 1 know where — where I must be I lav my head to sleep and awakened to the smell of tulips and lillies. The air was fresh and green the earth covered with colors of red; gold, yellow blue this — yes this is the place 1 knew. God had lay me here at last, that place of clear blue skies freedom where animals run with the wind and green grass grows for miles all around. that prosperous place I finally found. Rich Savino “76” The death of Richard Savino is a deep personal loss to all who knew him. Much is known of Richard’s wrestling abilities and awards given him, and need not be recounted here. But, Richard Savino, our friend, was that and infinitely more. A guy whose optimism and enthusiasm for life was infectious and all pervading. To his family, 1 extend my heartfelt sorrow in this most difficult time. We’ll miss him. IN MEMORIUM And some go through life without living, leaving no sign of their passage. But some cascade through life with pleasure And in their wake fall gentle rains Warm and refreshing 208 -J- i. —.
