just another high school, just another year . . . A Student Life ............p. 4 Getting Involved .......p. 24 Just Another Day ... .p. 94 People p. 104 3 Sharing, creating, loving, freely giving, singing, dancing, and romping together, 5 6 living in a shared world of each other’s wildest creations a safeness is created by allowing and wanting and loving one another to be what we are — 10 spiritual beings •utside of space and time in this moment’s forever, 'r the minutes drifting on slowly passing the time of another day — 11 playing games, the most beautiful games, become a bird singing, a rocket flying, a tree sunning, a tiger roaring, 12 13 14 a restless sea undulating, a fire crackling, a leaf floating, a child building a sand castle, 15 a lover loving, an orange dripping, a volcano exploding, a wind rushing, or a mountain waiting — 17 always knowing who you really are; 19 only now do we realize these moments can never again be lived; the sweet memories of another year gone by. 21 In these times of insincerity and coldheartedness, it is refreshing to find honest character in Wellington C. Mepham High School. Such limitless dedication is found in but a handful of institutions; it is time that these actions be greatfully acknowledged. For countless years of dedication, unselfishness, and service, for giving generously from within, and for truly being a friend to all, we dedicate Treasure Chest ’76 to Mr. Harry Moussas. It is a teacher like Mr. Moussas who prevents our school from becoming “just another high school.” 23 iAh'TA UA ill coVRYi'y DF XWAKHKK 5CK00I CLASS OF U •GETTING INVOLVED Activities and Athletics Dear Seniors -- To paraphrase ANOTHER great spokesman, 'never have so many, done so much, for so many'; translated-into words with understanding; you are a great group. Cooperation was the key word; in action and functioning as a class you worked better than most groups today. At the risk of speaking in platitudes and cliches 'that's where it's at'. I do believe that the future for our society lies in the ability of individuals to understand each other, communicate with each other, allow for 'human' error, and COOPERATE fully in all endeavors. You seniors, as this observer sees it, have a head start on that future; you have proven that not only do you have the ability to work together, but you have shown, more importantly, that it works. I congratulate you, and at the same time, wish you the best for 'our' future world. I close with a heartfelt 'thanks' for allowing me to share in this period of growth with you. Most sincerely--Martin A. In January, the band had the privilege of playing a half-time show at the Nassau Coliseum. The band then played their annual Winter Concert. In late February, with the assistance of the Jolly Rogers Stage Band, Mepham had another successful Pop Concert. The band and orchestra then traveled to Bennington, Vermont for a very exciting and rewarding Exchange Concert The band finished off the year by participating in the Spring Arts Festival. MUSIC IN THE AIR A Capella Choir 32 Madrigal Ensemble Doris Smith, Conductor 34 The most socially devastating event of this year—Mepham's Pop Concert— is over, but the laughs linger. John Horvath's I'm not going to do imitations of Norm Smagley and Dr. Goergen still walk the earth. Transit's crashing last chord, as well as Gina Amato's lovely fade-out, has left its impression on our eardrums. This concert was especially marked by lots of music, brilliant and brash, sweet and soothing, wooden and electric. You could almost see a shining moon when the Barbershop singers harmonized on its light. It would hardly be fair to say that any one of the performers stole the show (although two gangsters ran off with all the receipts after the Saturday night finale, both escaped convicts named John Q. Smith of Anytown, U. S. A.) Norm and Mike Grie-co are still rehearsing what to do at a party. And A1 Brown and Dave Kraskow remember with tears their escape to Chicago and the wonderful reception the audience gave them on their return. The satisfaction of success has raised its stately mane almost as high as those marvels of the leg world, the Pirettes, kicked to wind up the show. Congratulations and good luck next year. Mepham was quick scoring and hard fighting. Under the leadership of Coach Charles Martone the team gave all their efforts to every game. All other members of the Varsity collected a record of ten and one. Miss Bineares and all returning members of the 75-76 team are looking forward to next year with great hope and anticipation. Winning appears to be the accepted thing for the girls' badminton team. The girls’ badminton team for the past six years has complied an outstanding record of 68-1. This year the team suffered its first lost to Wantagh High School. Finishing second in the League with a 10-and-1 record Mepham was the only team in their league in which all members of the Varsity qualified for the playoffs. Four members of the varsity team continued onto the County Championships. Lisa Markowitz and Karen Gerbino were eliminated in the first round. Emerging as second place winners in the county playoffs was the third doubles team of Terri Walsh and Lisa Ratto. Patience, guidance and most of all togetherness are all attributes necessary in the development of a winning team. The 1975-76 girls' field hockey team has worked, played, suffered and smiled together for three years. Seven of the eleven starters this year were seniors. The team finished second in die league during the 1974-75 season. This year the team was undefeated in regular league play. Their victory over MacArthur in the last game of the season crowned them League IV champions. Losing in the county semi-finals to Valley Stream Central by a close score of 1-0 did not diminish any feeling of achievement on the part of the team or coach. All involved felt the season was both rewarding and successful. 71 1975-76 was a unique year for the girl's track team. For the first time girls track competed in the fall. Despite the record the season was successful in many respects. Six of the eleven girls on the team participated in the County Finals because of their previous performances in the playoffs. Growing together in skill and friendship made Mep-ham's team quite unique. The victory was special in many respects. The memories of Volleyball 75-76 will continue on forever with the reign of Mepham's titles. 85 BASKETBALL 86 The Spirit of 76 girls' basketball team worked very hard this season to achieve a winning record. Stephan Schwartz Cathy Weber Sue Weil Cathy Weber- Do not reject what you do not understand, for with understanding there may be acceptance. Sue Weil- Don't think twice, it's all right. Bob Dylan Scott Zaffrin Jerome Zajac Joan Zamojcin 152 CAMERA SHY Randy Zeitlin Sueann Whitney--The error of youth is to believe that intelligence is a substitute for experience, while the error of age is to believe that experience is a sub-stitue for intelligence. Lyman Bryson Alice Wilken--Don't walk in front of me, I may not follow. Don't walk behind me, I may not lead. Walk beside me and just be my friend. Annemarie Wilken--I get by with a little help from my friends. Jill Lori Witlin--Man is the only animal that laughs and weeps; for lie is the only animal that is struck by the difference between how things are and how they might have been. Hazlitt Judy Wohl--In love, one has the need of being believed; in friendship of being understood. Catherine Young--God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change those I can and wisdom to know the difference. Joan Zamojcin--Take time to be friendly, it is the road to happiness. Take time to laugh, it is the music of the soul and most of all take time to love and be loved, it is the privilege of us all. Goergen Principal The theme of this Yearbook is just another high school, just another year... While this reflects the attitude of some of our school population, the Yearbook’s editors have set out to examine and, hopefully, to show that the facts belie this assertion of near-universal apathy. One reason for a feeling of apathy is that the general school population is not totally aware of the myriad activities in which our students are involved. There are fifty separate activities in sports and other extra-curricular interests. Between the Band and Choir, over ten per cent of our student body is actively engaged in music on a daily basis. Outside of school, several hundred students devote thousands of hours to volunteer work in a variety of fields. The hallowed, school-wide RAH-RAH spirit of the yesteryears is the fashionable criterion for measuring apathy. Modern students are more individualistic in choosing the object of their enthusiasm. They are more involved in activities of their choosing than their spectator forbears. One of our modern school problems is that the school community has taken for granted the numbers of activity hours of our students. In a real sense the activities have become routine and unglamarous compared to the daily global excitement fed to us by sensational T-V, movie and newspaper offerings. Perhaps as the current financial conditions take the bloom off certain concepts of glamor, excitement and novelty we will have a better appreciation of our school and its activities. Mepham is not just another high school . A school is its students and we are mighty proud of them. This is not just another year . In light of your many accomplishments you can change that to the words of the song it was a very good year . Thank you for the pleasure of your company and what you have done for all of us at Mepham. Stephens as a secret society. By 1886 made up of male, female, white and Negro, skilled rilled, reached 700,000. In‘addition to demanding an — erate with the war effort. After 1917, the IWW members began to leave the organization in greater numbers and it does not exist today. The American Federation of Labor was founded in 1886 under the leadership of Samuel Gompers, a cigar maker. This labor organization was organized on a craft union basis, thus limiting it to skilled workers — cigar rollers, carpenters, etc. Local unions combined to form state and national unions of each craft, but each local was independent. Each union made its own laws, les, made contracts and set strike policy. In turn, union worked on overall policy, public relations, lobbied for pro-labor legislation and established new locals. GE MARCH 11, 1976--2:51 P. M.--THE END 1% One final word . . . Although our years at Mepham have come to a close, they will continue to live on in the form of memories. In our minds, we are able to recapture the moments that have made up our years spent at this school; each of us has the power to create whatever we want from these memories. In doing this we will see that it is the small things we have done and the people we have shared our time with that make our school unique. It is this book’s purpose to keep alive these memories for many years to come and to reassure us that TREASURE CHEST ’76 was not just another high school yearbook nor was this year at Mepham just another year.
