We thank you, 1975 Senior Class 18 Our sophomore year began a new way of counseling at Mepham. Instead of students of ail grades sharing counselors because their last names happened to start with the same letters, our class was assigned two counselors of our own to work with us dur- ing our three years at Mepham. From plan- ning junior schedules to choosing colleges, from children to adults, they helped us grow. 19 AREA CLOSED BOARD OF EDUCATION J. Groen, P. Deeley, K. Ashworth, H. Luce, T. Rylander, G. Band had another successful year performing as both the Concert Band and Marching Band. The Concert or Symphonic Band was directed by Mr. Herbert Schoales and assisted by Mr. Howard Rockwin. The group was made up of 73 musicians of diverse instrumental talent. The directors had their work cut out for them to uni- fy the individual talents of the band members into a functioning musical organization. Through hard work and persistence, they man- aged to develop a fine Symphonic Band that truly upheld the traditions and high standards of previous years. The Marching Band will always be remembered for its fine performances at Mepham's home football games. Under the field direction of Drum Major Frank Colletti and Drum Majorette Peg Herzberg, the band performed a pre-game show and a half-time program at every game. Under the very able leadership of Band Captain Mike Tucker, the band held its fundraising pro- gram to finance the annual exchange concert. As usual, the exchange weekend created some great music and great friends. 61 MADRIGAL ENSEMBLE CHAMBER CHORALE Hard work pays off, as dem- onstrated by the school orchestra. Daily rehearsals led to successful winter and spring concerts. With Nancy Jacobs as concert-mistress and president, and Howard Rockwin conducting, sounds of violins, flutes, and piano mingled with other popular notes at Mepham. I'd better start preparing for my college boards. I'm really expecting to be ranked in the top tenth of the class. If I get up enough nerve, I might cut gym today. I think I'll buy lunch in the cafe- teria today. What am I going to do? I'm late for class! High School is a great place to meet new people and make new friends. I can't go out tonight — I have school tomorrow. JUNIOR SENIOR I'll cut gym to study for the test. Well, PSAT's don't count any- way. Well, maybethe upper half. It's nice outside; I think I'll cut English. Cafeteria food? Is that what they call it? I bring my own lunch! Gym to chemistry in four minutes? Come on, they don't really expect me to be on time. Well, I'm sure there are many people I still haven't met. Even though I stayed out late, I'll manage to get to school. Study? A combined score of 620 isn't that bad! I'm not a number — I'm a hu- man being! I'll cut physics 2nd period, math 4th, psych 5th . . Who's got a car? Let's go to Burger King! What period is this, anyway? The experiences enriched the learning process by helping students to see a relationship between what they learned in the classroom and the real world. Many years ago students were long on experience and short on ideas, while today the opposite is true. Experience-based education can ease the transition from learning to working or in a continuing education after public school. Not only has the experience enriched the intellect but has enabled the student to develop an awareness of self in a unique way — truly preparing him for what lies ahead. 148 BOCES CULTURAL ARTS Most people are aware of the students who every day left the halls of Mepham to attend the many vocational courses offered at B.O.C.E.S. (Board of Co-operative Educational Serv- ices), such as conservation, nursing, cosmetology, and veterinary studies. In addition to these, there were the few students who left on a little yellow bus with scripts, music, and dance clothes in hand. These are the aspiring actors and dancers of our school who attend- ed the B.O.C.E.S. Cultural Arts program. The combination of professional teachers, solid course outlines, and the common interests of all involved enabled the students to develop their talents in the professional manner which they could not find in a general high school atmosphere. Perhaps Mepham will be the alma mater of a few famous performers of the future. PROM COMMITTEE Chairperson: Linda Williams SOPHOMORES 020 C. Abbey, D. Abbondola, S. Acker, F. Affisio, C. Ageloff, D. With Nancy Carey as high-scoring center, forwards Kathy Hiller and Sue Irwin, guards Laura Regan and Maureen Timony, and Coach Bineares' encouraging leadership, the team's hard work paid off with the satisfaction of accomplishment. 170 The badminton team was the most successful of the fall sports as they won their fifth consecutive Long Island Banner by going undefeated. Led by league champions Leslie Luft (1st singles), Barbara Dallas (2nd singles), Kathy Hiller (3rd singles), and Donna Sisalli and Linda Hunt (2nd doubles), the team won every match, including the Mitropolitan Ladies Dougles Championship (Leslie Luft and Barbara Dallas). All of Mepham was proud of this year's team. DOWN THE ALLEY DOWN THE FIELD Within The Routine 173 OVERTHE NET JV Volleyball The girls' varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams each won their division title with a record of 9-0. However, due to the fact that some of the players were disqualified for partici- pating in a vacation tournament, both the JV and varsity teams, without their regular players, lost in the finals. 174 VARSITY VOLLEYBALL 175 IN THE SPIRIT 176 No game can be complete without cheerleaders. This ar's co-captains Denise Colon and Kathy Greene, along with the other six cheerleaders, led Mepham's enthusiastic games to many spirited victories. Along with the cheerleaders, were the two dynamic Debbie Dachinger and Gerrie Lassman. We can not forget our rubber duckie Tom Strolla. Everyone will agree that the girls did a fantastic job and deserve much credit for all the time and effort they contributed to Mepham's athletic teams. aniD S3HDVOD 8ZL TWIRLERS 179 IN THE HUDDLE FOOTBALL The varsity football team had a successful season, led by tri-captains Ken Cloud, Mike Mayer, Randy Ruth, despite injuries and a tough league. Ken Cloud, Bob Corbin, Mike Mayer, and Randy Ruth were elected to All Gridiron 44 team. Peter Menna was voted the team's Most Versatile Player. Varsity 180 Mepham 6 Kennedy 0 Mepham 26 Bethpage 8 Mepham 13 Calhoun 0 Mepham 20 Long Beach 7 Mepham 6 Port Washington 6 Mepham 20 Sewanhaka 0 Mepham 18 McArthur 6 FOOTBALL 183 fjjg - PAST THE GOALIE Mepham's soccer team placed second in the tough South Shore II Division despite several injuries to key players. Mitch Edelman, who scored seventeen goals, joined Tom Coccia (All South Shore) to lead a potent attack. For the seventh straight year Mepham's soccer team reached the playoffs. Cr pAMfli THROUGH THE HOOP This year's Pirate basketball team finished with a 3 and 9 record. Although the record indicates otherwise, the Pirates gave the opposition a fierce battle in most of the games. With co- captains Ken Cloud and Don Nickel, the only returnees from last year's playoff squad, Mepham showed poise, hustle, and determination in what was considered a rebuilding year. 186 Varsity WRESTLING ON THE MATS Coach Ken Hunte's wrestlers compiled an 14-1 team record. Throughout the season, Mepham was ranked first in the county due to spectacular efforts by several individuals. Lee Spiegal, John Schmidt, John McGrath, and John Harvey were all undefeated. John Citrongola and Jeff Creighton had excellent records. In the Division Tournament, Mepham soundly defeated all opponents and placed fourteen men in the County Tourney. For the first time in fifteen years, Mepham won the County Championship. Coach Hunte deserves special recognition for the outstanding job he has done in upholding Mepham's reputation as a wrestling power. 189 AT THE RACES CROSSCOUNTRY Mepham's cross-country team upheld its reputation as the team to beat in Nassau County. Gary Lindquist, Dexter Braff, and Bob Scwartzberg led the state renowned team to another unbeaten dual meet season and a second place finish in the country championships. TRACK Coach Limmer's team once again proved its excellence. The team finished strongly in all events. Outstanding players for the year were Bob Mauchan, Bob Schwartzberg, Gary Lindquist and Dexter Braff. ON THE DIAMOND BASEBALL The baseball team came back as Long Island Champs of 1974. They had a successful season with many returning players. 193 19S 1% It's only the beginning . . . 197 Jim Gregory Many thanks to all the teachers, students, and parents who expressed their kind thoughts and prayers to our family. Jim Gregory 198 Todd McCallum You will be forever remembered as a friend, forever remembered in our hearts. MEMORIAM Ernie Lucas Ernie lived for the present, he took things as they came. He was one of those people with whom you just naturally made friends. Ern never knew what the word hassle meant, and it was impossible to get him angry. He was at his best when he was hap- py and smiling, which was almost all the time. To some Ernie Lucas is just a name, to oth- ers a fading memory, but to those who really knew him, Ernie lives eternally.
