Wellington C. Mepham High School Bellmore, New York Treasure Chest '73 Co-Editors-in-Chief: Sheila Blum and Lisa Weinberger 9 10 11 13 We haven't wasted one minute of our friendship. v pirates : -• l Seniors MR. MARTIN FLEISCHER Senior Class Advisor Each year there is a new” senior class; and each year the senior class is better than the class before; and this year is no different. One might ask, why is this so? The answer is a simple one — we grow! we learn through experience! we are taught! as a consequence, we improve! Yes, the class of 73 has proven itself worthy of this year's title — the better senior class. With the 70's jargon of — do your own thing, put it all together, and no way, you (seniors) did it all. You showed us that in 'no way' were you to be denied your ambitious and worthy goals. You gave us the true meaning of 'do your own thing' by being innovative and acting independently while maintaining a constant awareness of the other fellow's toes and recognition of his 'own thing.' — And following quite logically, through complete and honest cooperation with all, you 'put it all together'and became the best of 73. With the sincerest of wishes for a future of continued successes, I am still the adviser to the 'better' senior class. Led by co-captains Seaman, Mathias, and Weingart they finished with a 2-6-1 record. The defeat of J. F. Kennedy for the first time and a tie with powerful Freeport were the high points of an otherwise disappointing season. The coaches will miss the fine seniors who played with great spirit and determination. 127 Varsity Soccer VARSITY SOCCER — ROW 1 — W. O'Brien, M. Masi, M. Passiatore, M. Cohen, J. Citran-gola, C. They booted their way to a 14-3-1 record and they split the home-and-home series with traditional rivals like Calhoun. The team suffered a disappointing 3-1 loss to Lynbrook in the second round of the county playoffs at Hofstra. Junior Varsity Soccer J.V. SOCCER — ROW 1 — M. Kimmel, C. Korman, M. Edelman, V. Varsity Wrestling Our Pirate wrestlers finished a tough season with a record of 10-2. Some fine individual achievements were turned in by Dan McCann and Glenn DelGuidice. Our finest wrestler, Ron Duckstein, finished second in the county tournament. Coach Hunte continues to work for a team that will return the county championship to Mepham where it was for so many years. 130 Cross Country ROW 1 — L. Clement, R. Collins, E. Wegener, N. Lindquist, M. Bel-ger, F. Benso, N. Blunt, J. Creighton, L. Mancini, M. Diaz, R. LaMorell, P. Maus, D. Hughes. The 1972 Cross-Country team was the best in recent years. Coach Limmer led the team to a 9-1 record, the third best in Nassau County. Of those who ran the 2.2 mile course for the Pirates, Mark Belger, Norm Blunt, and Gary Lindquist were definitely outstanding. 131 Track The Mepham 1972-73 Track team was one of outstanding caliber. With many superior athletes and the dedicated leadership of Coach Paul Limmer they were Nassau County's top team and were rated among the top 10 teams in New York State. The Pirate track men displayed unique dedication, ignoring both the weather and injuries. Their hard work paid off, witnessed by their record. In winter competition they won over 30 straight meets. The graduating seniors will be missed, but Coach Limmer is confident that the younger members will be able to extend the streak indefinitely. TRACK TEAM — ROW 1 — S. Braff, R. Brunetti, R. Rose, C. The Pirates' outstanding stars were the men who deserved most of the credit for Mepham's great success. All were outstanding in their events. Shotputters were Steve Millard, Ron Rose, and Rich Brunetti. Jumpers and vaulters were Tom Testa, Rob Greenberg, and Rick Ambrosio. Hurdlers were Ken Hohurst and Rick Wagner. Runners were Sal Costagliola, Norm Blunt, Steve Braff, Gary Lindquist, Ed Heitner and Mark Belger. Mark Belger was particularly outstanding, and in the New York State Winter Championships ran a 2:14:1 in the 1,000, which was the best time by a high school runner for 1973 in the United States. 133 Varsity Basketball ROW 1 — M. Corapi, H. Charney, C. Carroll, M. Waks, C. Seger. ROW 2 — Coach Cerek, E. Diller, A. Voitovitch, W. Yeneralo, K. Cloud, M. Craber, T. Assmus, P. Knoph, B. Bore, J. Ciocia The Mepham Basketball team, led by captains Chris Carroll and Paul Knoph, had an excellent season. With Chris setting the plays and Paul scoring the points, the Pirates started the season with eight straight wins. They split the series with a strong Freeport team, winning the second game 82-76 at home. The team ended the regular season 16-2. In the first round of the play-offs they defeated Oceanside 75-62. In round two they faced Hempstead. The Pirates played a great game but lost to the bigger Hempstead team 72-60. The season was a great one and the team's 17-3 record speaks for itself. Gymnastics Rifle RIFLE TEAM — Mr. Linehan, B. Herlihy, R. Bosher, A. Dicocco, J. Gunyan, S. Fulep, R. Termotto (missing), R. Brendel. Steven Braff SUSAN RITACCO ISOLDE CURATOLO Eventually all people must pass, Some through the clouds. Some through the grass. The tragedy, it's so full fo pain. It affects my nerves. It affects my brain. The memories I recall While walking through the halls Make me close my eyes Just to picture you were here. Remembering all the friends That we went out with together, But not, those thoughts are gone Like the wind taking a feather. Rudy Nolfo MICHAEL SANFILIPPO Why is death so meaningless? It's like taking a rose from the garden; Days will go on, for sure, It's so easy to forget, for Those who never admired that rose. The sun has gone away, The darkness of the night has engulfed the day. They've wilted, the ones close to That rose. For some, the sun will never Come out, the gloom has Made its wound. Bob Mathias Treasure Chest '73 is Dedicated to CDrs. Anna feuerlict In these days of changing mores and standards, teachers, more than ever before, are faced with the age-old argument of whether they are to be the standard bearers of the traditional ways, or to be swept along by the new wave. Anna Feuerlicht has elected to do as she has always done — and that is to teach as much German to her students as she possibly can. It may be said of her students that if they forget half they've learned, they would still know more than anyone else's students. 203
