To be lived as it comes. 6 Of being a great chemist and being able to turn lead into Platinum 10 11 Of being able to cross the country without even stopping for a breath 17 18 20 21 22 As a mepham student I achieved all oj these things and much more . . . Editorโ€™s Foreword Editor-in-Chief Ronald Berman While planning this year's yearbook, I tried many exciting innovations that I felt would make this a truly outstanding yearbook. Many of the features introduced here, such as the color cover, dividers, arrangement of underclassmen, and teacher and student candids are the first to appear in a high school yearbook in the Long Island area. Techniques and features, though, are not the most important part of a yearbook; it is the ability of the book to hold the memories and spirit of our high school years that will prove its eventual succes. It is my hope that this publication will be able to, in twenty years, regenerate the same feelings of pride, joy, and accomplishment in ourselves, as we hold now. 24 Dedication Dr. Joseph H. Goergen In coming to serve as Mepham's principal. Dr. Joseph Goergen has brought with him many invaluable years of experience in both the business and educational fields. It is perhaps because of this versatility that Dr. Goergen was able to acquire the rare insight needed to deal successfully with the many and complex problems facing an administration today. Throughout the year. Dr. Goergen has proven himself to be an active participant both in student affairs and in enlarging the student role in school policy. He has, in fact, often sought out student opinion on various matters. It is that, his fairness, and his open-minded approach to all issues that has earned him the respect and admiration of the entire student body. It is therefore with great pleasure, that we, the Class of 1971, dedicate our yearbook, the 1971 Treasure Chest, to Dr. Joseph Goergen. 25 26 27 FACULTY: (Left to Right) Rocco Abatemarco English Annette Adler Biology Thor Abrahamson Social Studies Joseph Ambrosini Domenic Antinucci Patricia Awe 28 Kathleen Alberto Kathleen Alex Andrea Alschuler Joel Altsman 29 FACULTY: (Left To Right) Deborah Baci Spanish Edmund Berridge Bookkeeping Anthony Barbera Driver Education Brett Baker Donald Beckley Sara Belardi Eugene Belkin Gail Bennett Jane Bennett 30 David Balaban Linda Bally Robert Basilone Charles Bauer Barbara Becker Lee Benoit Ronald Berman Mitchell Bernstein Charles Berrini Robert Besner 31 FACULTY: (Left To Right) William Bimbie Spanish Theodora Bineares Physical Education Robin Better Howard Blank Steven Blick Rae Brower Michael Brown Julia Bruno Jeremiah Buono Patrick Burke Patricia Burns Deborah Bushman Nancy Buthmann Robert Butler 32 Terry Bochner John Bongiorno James Brennan Shawne Brent Mitchell Broder JaneCadieux Paul Caiati MarkCalvey Belita Campanelli Melinda Campbell 33 FACULTY: (Left To Right) Stewart Braverman Business Arlene Boranian English Kenneth Borg Industrial Arts Anastasia Cantallatos David Cawley Salvatore Cefalu Roberta Chopp Carol Ciancarelli Donna Ciavolella Frances Cimminio Steven Cisek Cynthia Clowes 35 Debra Clukies Shelley Cohen Susan Collins FACULTY: (Left To Right) Rhoda Brown Guidance Burton Cafro Printing Elaine Calitri English Philip Cook Harriet Cooperman Deborah Coppola Glenn Cording 36 W. You, seniors, have captured an elusive concept; one that in the past has been attributed only to those who have lived longer and are more experienced. You have learned that the end result is the important one; you have worked together and attained! You covered for each other; when one couldn't make it, there was always another who could, and did; nothing was left undone. If I were asked to choose one single factor that would be most indicative of future success โ€” that would be it โ€” complete cooperation of a group dedicated to absolute fulfillment of a given task. The very best of luck to you all in any and all of your future endeavors from โ€” 'another seniorโ€ who cared'. 93 Principal Dr. Joseph H. Georgen Dr. Goergen has served as Mepham's principal for one year now, and has brought all his past experiences with him. He did his undergraduate work at Catholic University and received his Masters and Doctorate from St. John's University. He taught at private schools in New York City for seven years, and after World War II entered the industrial business in Pittsburg, where he remained for fourteen years. In 1960 he decided to return to teaching and taught foreign languages for one year in the Farmingdale School District. He became Assistant Principal for Howitt Jr. High School, and then served as principal there for five years. Besides presiding as our principal Dr. Goergen teaches at Hofstra. He feels the great, great majority,of Mepham's students Sre wonderful people and he considers it an honor to be associated with this school. 94 Assistant Principals Vincent DiTeodoro Arthur McQuillan Harry Newman John Martin Paul Kline District Principal Dr. Frederick H. All of the major events and happenings of the year are captured in its pages. The publication of the yearbook in the late spring is always the cause of much excitment, for the underclassmen as well as for the seniors. This year under Editor-in-Chief Ronnie Berman, the 1971 TREASURE CHEST witnessed many new and innovative changes. Much of its layout, pictures, and copy have been changed in order to assemble the finest possible yearbook. It represents a complex group of clubs, activities, sports, and above all, people. The 1971 yearbook seeks to capture not only a visual representation of the year, but also its flavor and spirit. 123 Laurie Weisberg, Editor-in-Chief and Jeff Roth, Assistant editor. Vol. 34 No.5 Wellington C Mepham High School January. 1971 The BUCCANEER has long been the outstanding newspaper organized and edited by the students themselves. The paper functions as a forum for the activities, ideas, and opinions of the student body. Editor-in-Chief Laurie Weisberg and assistant editor Jeff Roth were responsible for the overall publication of the BUCCANEER and established the excellent standards of its editorial policy. Incorporated into each issue were current events in both the school community, humorous and analytical articles, creative writing and sports. The high excellence of the paper has been proven by the large amount of recognition it received by various journalistic contests throughout the state. Under a new and innovative program this year, participatory democracy, its membership is comprised of any student who chooses to be a part of the student government. Under the new constitution, the organization has a great deal of leeway in both the planning and execution of its major ideas. Like most student councils, Mepham's student government attempts to provide a forum for the students ideas and suggestions. But unlike most other organizations serving in the same capacity, our student government places no restrictions on who may become a member. In this way, it eliminates the traditional hieracy elitist domination. During the past year, the Student Council has established a Student Advisory and Grievance Board, Faculty-Student discussion sessions, a Peace Corps Program, interschool visitation, and other programs for the betterment of the school and the community. In addition, it has supported needy families at Christmas time, and sponsored various assemblies, evening activities, and open end forums. This year's Student Council has laid the groundwork for participatory democracy as well as an improved student-faculty-administration relationship. The senior student council members offer the underclassmen the sincere wish of a successful continuation and expansion of the Student Council principles this year. For the second straight year the Mepham football team enjoyed a successful season on the strength of its powerful defense. The Pirates, led by Coach Spence Zuckerman, drove to a 4-0 record in the first half of the season with victories over Valley Stream Central, Oceanside, Calhoun and Hewlett. The Buc defense was the key to Mepham's early success as it never allowed more than 8 points in a single game. Defensiveback Neil Weingart thrilled the fans in Mepham's third straight win over archrival Calhoun by returning an intercepted pass 101 yards to insure the victory. A loss in the fifth game against Baldwin started the Pirates on a four game losing streak that gave them a 4-4 season's record. The games, including 6-0 loss to Bellmore Kennedy and an 8-0 setback by Herricks, were extremely close, as the offense continually tried without success to put points on the score board. The 1970-1971 Pirate wrestlers did a great deal to keep up the school's reputation as they finished the year with a 10-2 record in dual meets and a third place finish in SSAL II. The Bucs did extremely well in tournaments as they took first place in the Wantagh and Massapequa tournaments, a second position in the South Shore II, and a third place finish in the South Shore tournament. John Mirabella and Mike Muscara both finished first in their classes in the South Shore. Coach Ken Hunte, a former Mepham wrestler and college star, has guided the pirates to a high standard of excellence. Soccer VARSITY Track WINTER TRACK Sitting: B. Kornblum, P. Weinstein, R. AWARD WINNERS Mepham's soccer team took its second SSAL II title when they defeated Massape-qua 3-0 on October 26. The pirates established themselves as powers in soccer as they swept to an unbeaten league season and a second straight playoff spot. After its tremendous regular season Coach Ken Hunte's team was dealt a misfortune in the playoffs. After the Pirates first found game with Oceanside ended in a scoreless tie, the contest was awarded to the Sailors on an advantage in corner kicks. It was the second straight year that Mepham had bowed to Oceanside in playoff competition, but the team had accomplished a great deal. It gave soccer a major sport status at Mepham and the school recognition in interscholastic sports as a great force in soccer. Sitting: R. Weinstein, M. Caccaro, R. Cadolini, S. Noflo, P. Marino.
